New Street Fighter film, game launches will 'coincide'

The Legend of Chun-Li producer Patrick Aiello says home edition of SFIV will accompany the movie's February 27 theatrical release.

Street Fighter IV will be a movie tie-in? Sort of, according to Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li producer Patrick Aiello. Speaking with industry news site GameDaily, Aiello said that while The Legend of Chun-Li and SFIV won't have much in common from a storyline perspective, "the film and game release dates will coincide." According to 20th Century Fox, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is slated to swoop into theaters February 27.

Addressing the thematic differences between The Legend of Chun-Li and SFIV, Aiello noted that the film focuses on "a very partitioned off origin story of the Street Fighter universe." Of particular note, Aiello said in June that two of the game's best-known, and oft-played, fighters--Ken and Ryu--won't make an appearance in the film. "There are just way too many characters in the Street Fighter universe to cram them all into one film," said Aiello via the movie's official blog. "We want to do each one the justice he/she deserves."

Smallville starlet Kristen Kreuk will take on the titular role of Chun-Li in the film, with Michael Clarke Duncan (The Green Mile, Daredevil) donning knuckle dusters as Balrog, Chris Klein (American Pie, Rollerball) as Guile compatriot Nash, and Rick Yune (The Fast and the Furious, Alone in the Dark II) as wizened master Gen. Hyde Park Entertainment has cast Neal McDonough (Band of Brothers, They Call Him Sasquatch) as Chun-Li's archenemy, M. Bison. The film is being helmed by Andrzej Bartkowiak, director of the critically and commercially unsuccessful film adaptation of Doom.

As for the game, Street Fighter IV burst onto the Japanese arcade scene earlier this year, with cabinets only just recently finding their way to US coin-ops. For more details on the home version--slated to appear on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC--check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Man I have to wait longer for the game!, Ok as for the movie - I just hope it doesn't end up like the previous Street Fighter movie! Van Damme was a joke! Ken and Ryu looked like idiots!!! Ok the director for this movie made Cradle 2 the Grave and Exit Wounds which I actaully liked. Doom was a failure so I hope he makes up for it, as for the Actress Kristen I have my doubts, if she can't do a proper spinning bird kick, then the movie is a failure lol

Omg, this is going to fail. The fight scenes are going to be rediculously lame. Why the hell couldn't they just make this anime. If they did, they could animate each fighters' special moves and make an awesome movie. Just picture Kristen Kreuk using rapid kick attacks.

did anyone see the original street fighter film with Van Damme as Guile? It was horrible. By far, one of the worst films ever made. This one looks like it could head down that same path.

Wow, How stupid can they be? nobody will watch this garbage except for those who dont know anything about street fighter in the first place, sigh... looks like "Patrick Aiello" has Uwe Bolle secretly directing this movie for him... and here i was excited when i first heard of this a few months back, now im back to being disappointed...

Who is this movie being made for exactly? I'm not interested in it and clearly every other SF fan isn't either (due to the lack of Ken and Ryu perhaps). I see this movie being a flop.

    All hail SF4!

Mmm I have the odd feeling that they're trying to make another Dead or Alive. My bet is that Kristen Kreuk is probably going to spend 3/4 of the movie in a bikini or something, after all they sure didn't pick her for her acting ability.

    No Ryu or Ken.

That's a bit like having a gears of war film with no Marcus Fenix.

Why are they putting in Charlie instead of Guile?
    Gen aswell?

The choice of characters they picked for the film sounds really bad to me.
At least they got MBison I suppose.

    Sounds bad.

I hope they prove me wrong.

Chun-Li is from China! Therefore she is Chinese. This alone makes the movie crapola.

Yeah, it would be a lot better if Capcom itself were making the movie. I don't know if the RE movie is being produced by Capcom, but at least it looks like the sorce material (the games) and not some cheap adaptation.

Kristin Kreuk is Eurasian so I guess the directors got it half right, and she seems to be the movie's only positive aspect. The rest of the cast, the horrible director and the absence of Ryu and Ken all spell disaster for the flick. At least the first Street Fighter motion picture was funny in a campy sort of way.

    Posted Aug 19, 2008 5:52 pm PT

Also, they finally got it right by makin the cg movie version of resident evil or biohazard. That will probably be the only good movie capcom has ever produced. Wait, aren't they the ones makin the movie too? Produced and developed!

  • shinspikes

    Posted Aug 19, 2008 5:50 pm PT

Why does capcom allow this? Why do they let one of their key franchises and name get tarnished like that? Do the Japanese execs actually think that this crap american movie rendition of the game make it look cool? Since they probably don't understand most of the movie, they probably think the dumb cheesy actin and oneliners are cool when spoken in english.

I know Kristin Kreuk looks asian, when she's really not. She is still far from being Chinese, not to I don't think she has the martial background to back it up with.

Does she have the legs? I think not.
