Street Fighter Alpha pummels PSN

Capcom's original PlayStation fighter hurricane kicks to Sony's online store as a PSOne Classic this Thursday.

Thanks to a rating in the Entertainment Software Rating Board's database, it isn't exactly a surprise that Capcom will be rereleasing Street Fighter Alpha as PlayStation Classic through its online store. What is surprising, however, is the amount of time that has passed since that initial spot back in January.

Today, Capcom confirmed by way of its official blog that Street Fighter Alpha will be available for purchase on the PlayStation Network this Thursday. While the gamemaker did not reveal pricing information, original PlayStation games rereleased through the PSN typically sell for $5.99. As with other PSOne Classics, Street Fighter Alpha can be played on both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable.

Originally released for the PS in 1995, Street Fighter Alpha represented the first major break from the established Street Fighter 2 formula. Most notably, the game featured a distinctive, anime-inspired art style, new animations, and a super combo attack system.

The Street Fighter franchise has been a focal point of Capcom's recent revival of its classic franchises. In addition to the as-yet-undated release of Street Fighter IV for the Xbox 360 and PS3, Capcom will debut the overhauled Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for Sony and Microsoft's online storefronts later this year.

This is great news. I am shocked that it is a psn exclusive. That is impressive. I will most definitely be buying this.

This would be better news if it were Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold or Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. I know I'm not getting the first Street Fighter Alpha when I have Street Fighter Alpha 3 on my PSP.

I don't really care much for these PS1 games on PSN. They are exact emulations of the originals with no added content. One's better off digging up the original disc. That way you can play it on PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP via Remote Play. Now, if they were to add on online play like they did with Mortal Kombat II, that may be worthwhile.

Anyone who wanted Street Fighter Alpha already has it. I don't think this is necessary to be released on PSN. It's pointless.

As stated before Anthologies has the clear advantage in my opinion. To me there is nothing wrong with comparing the older Alpha titles to the newest version because I like all of them. Each one on a unique system be it Sega or Sony.

Tis' true the Saturn joystick was a sharp controller tool for button command inputs but it's been a while since I've picked up one of those. I know they came out with a Saturn type controller for the PS2 and it looked just like the original. Think it came with the Darkstalkers Collection.

Um, shinmew, Alpha Anthology had both versions of Alpha 3 in. You just got to beat the 1st version of Alpha 3 once, then go back to Alpha 3, hold select, & push either the start or the X button for the other version.

By the way, I still have a Saturn & a Dreamcast.

Hey did you try the Street Fighter Alpha NES but its PS2.

    First of all @SPD:

Not sure if you read properly but they are releasing Street Fighter Alpha which is the first game in the series and not Street Fighter Alpha 3.

Second of all the Sega Saturn controller was and still is the most efficient way to play 2D fighters. Heck I still have Darkstalkers and Alpha 2 packed away somewhere.

Mind you its a shame that the Saturn version of Alpha 3 never got released overshores. Personally I found that to be the best version next to the DC one.

Alpha 3 MAX is on the PSP lol, you don't need it anymore since it's already out. Just go and buy it at any videogame store. I have it as well.

"I think it met it's match once Anthologies, hit the PS2."
    ?
Yeah, and HOW many years and incarnations did we see between then? Anthology was not half the game Alpha 3 on Dreamcast was. Yeah, it had Alpha 1 and 2, but 3 wall the bare bones version. Since you seem to want to compare apples and oranges here, I'd figure I'd do the same for you. If you are going to compare one game to another, would it not be wise to stick to the generation of that era? Comparing a PS2 game to a Saturn is a bit pointless.

Yeah but not by much. Though it may have been slightly better than Street Fighter Zero on PSX I think it met it's match once Anothologies hit the PS2.

    My brother has a Saturn.
He admits Saturn version was far better and he played both versions too.
And he's mostly a Playstation gamer (not a fanboy though).

  • IsmirZone

    Posted Aug 12, 2008 5:22 pm PT

Tranceplant ... That is a true statement. The Sega Saturn version is the best one and as so for Alpha 2. People can say all they want but that is a fact like it or not. I have the Saturn and PlayStation versions and I was convinced.

lazy port? its a standard Ps1 Classic, which always have top notch emulation, what were you expecting? its not a remake like BC:RA

  • Tranceplant

    Posted Aug 12, 2008 4:33 pm PT

Saturn version was clearly better. No offense to Playstation fans... it's the truth. See for yourself...

But as a 360 owner, i'll still wait for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix.

  • Ted_Zanarukando

    Posted Aug 12, 2008 4:23 pm PT

It looks like it is going to be a lazy port. I do not like lazy ports from antique platforms on HD platforms. I will not be giving up on Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. I would like an HD remake of Mega Man I-VI, not a lazy port as in MMAC on the GameCube.

Denji: Yet, if they were to release the Marvel vs Street Fighter games, then that's something I would buy.

I think a lot of other people would buy it too. A used copy is 95 dollars.

  • AlphaZ3r0

    Posted Aug 12, 2008 2:57 pm PT

Talk about pointless, Alpha 1 was the worst SFA, and the port of it for PS1 wasn't even arcade perfect. Why are they even bothering with this?

Hey, how about the arcade version instead?

  • DarkSan00

  • Generic_Dude

    Posted Aug 12, 2008 2:16 pm PT

Eh, I'd rather see rare games come out like the PS1 Suikoden games or Dragon Warrior 7... beats paying like $30-$50 for a game that came out before some of these Gamespotters were even born, lol.

  • Loucetios

    Posted Aug 12, 2008 2:13 pm PT

I think its great that Ps1 Classics are playable on both the ps3 and PsP, just transfer a saved file and you can take the game on the go. Really makes the price worth it so its playable on both consoles. Now if only more games supported remote play

What about Streetf-fighter third strike being upload not much point of downloading if you own the street fighter Alpha anthology on the Ps2 Which looks twice as good (and runs with no issues) on the Ps3 or a HD remix of Capcom vs Snk i think capcom have upload the orginal street-fighter one two many times
