Celebrity Sports Showdown comes to Wii

EA's latest minigame compilation squares off singers and sports stars in 12 activities, including inner-tubing, fighter-jet racing, and dodgeball.

Gamers around the world have already thrilled to big-name crossovers such as X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Aliens Versus Predator, and Lakers Versus Celtics and the NBA Playoffs. This holiday season, gamers will be able to add Sugar Ray Leonard versus Nelly Furtado to that list, courtesy of Electronic Arts.

As reported by MTV News, EA will bring Celebrity Sports Showdown to Nintendo's Wii this holiday season. Developed by the team behind last year's EA Playground, the game is replete with celebrities of the stage and sports arena, with MTV calling out singers Keith Urban, Fergie, Nelly Furtado, and LeAnn Rimes, as well as sports stars Sugar Ray Leonard, Kristi Yamaguchi, Paul Pierce, Reggie Bush, and Mia Hamm.

The minigames on offer will be as gallimaufry as the names attached to the project. Sports thus far revealed include inner-tubing, fighter-jet racing, slalom skiing, dodgeball, smash badminton, curling, canoeing, and volleyball. The pint-sized sports games have reportedly been modeled after Nintendo's ubiquitous Wii Sports pack-in, and gamers will use the Wii Remote to control the various minigames in a variety of different ways.

Celebrity Sports Showdown will accommodate up to four players, and MTV notes that it is "meant to be played by a group of people using a single Wii," indicating that it will lack online multiplayer functionality.

The sad thing is these game are made for nongamers who don't know quility. Another party game with no use of Miis. These game should always include the ability to play as Mii's and online play.

Sounds horrible. Has-been celebrities, media wh*res, peoples career's on the downslide needing a popularity boost. And What no Britney or Paris? The games sound like they'll be crap, too. Will there be updates avalible to download new characters? Maybe limited releases so you can trade them like cards?

is there anything in the world that could prevent EA from "developing" trash? is the gaming world forever cursed by "game developers" like EA? what a shame.

Now, if they had included a boxing or wrestling game in there... then it might have been worth a rental.
If only to watch a cartoon Keith Urban get the stuffing knocked out of him.

    Yay more 3rd party garbage...

The fact that it's from EA is also a HUGE shocker...

Maybe Nintendo should go back to not playing well with others.

=\ more shovelware. great..just what the wii needs. how about a well developed exclusive game for it instead EA. i don't want more minigames.

Another sports-based game using slightly altered/enhanced Wii Sports graphics? You are such a great third-party developer EA. Publish The Godfather and Medal of Honors 2. Then give us crap like EA Playground, Smarty Pants, the shallow MySims, and this? Oh, I forgot Boogie--if only the people that had played it could forget it too, along with the dancing blob.

If this is any indication of the "40 titles in development for Wii" then EA is in the doghouse with Ubisoft.

    @PandaBear86

That FPS might not be bad, provided Bloom and Timberlake are the targets.

Hey, I thought of a way to save this game: Keep everything the same, but instead of using the celebrities as player characters, use them as the sports equipment. That might be worth a rental.

Wow. EA really hates the Wii, doesn't it? They aren't even trying to develop real games for it anymore. They put out a decent port of the Godfather, and that's supposed to tide us over until what exactly?

I was mildly amused by the idea and even thought about buying 2 copies if it had online play. No online play means I won't be buying any copies. Oh well.

Although I think that this game will probably be lame in many ways, I think that people typically buying games for the Wii are not looking for that deep story line, graphically masterful and astounding type effect that others do in the Next Gen system battles. I'll admit that there are only so many ways to reinvent bowling and dodgeball but the idea of being able to throw something at LeeAnn Rimes head is fairly entertaining. On a side note....why do people still insist on changing the spelling of a word to prove a point "PHAIL" "Pwned" ? IF you want to be informative to people, you generally need to be at least as useful in the intelligence department as the people you are trying to relay the information to.

I know the rule "never judge a game by its cover" but seriously, this game will be a joke, just like Mortal Combat vs DC Universe. Whats next, an FPS game featuring Justin Timberlake and Orlando Bloom? My goodness.

    "okassar

PHAIL.The day that the Wii gets enough good games,I would rack it up,it's cheap.I hope that'll happen though, because I don't see any future to it...Some people say "oh,star fox might come out",well the series started failing on the GC,"whatever happened to Donkey Kong"...Rare is with MS now...Banjo?Rare....Wait,does that mean Nintendo only has Link,Metroid,Super Smash, and Mario on its side(Wario and Luigi fail,no),yes,"

I'm not sure what you mean about Donkey Kong exactly. Do you mean that there will never be another game like Donkey Kong Country or DK64? DK is owned by Nintendo, not Rare. Rare just developed DK games while they were a second-party developer for Nintendo. Besides, there was already a DK game for Wii; Donkey Kong Barrel Blast. Sure it was terrible, but it wasn't developed by Rare.

I'm not saying don't lose hope in the Wii, I'm just saying that DK is there too, although it doesn't really help much.

despite how wrong the idea is (yet, kinda funny), my main problem is EA no going online with this game. They'v epretty much been the pioneers for online play by third parties, and I expected a little more.

    EA + celebrities + Wii + minigames = GAME OF THE YEAR!!!!!!1

I thought 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand was a game that should never have been brought into fruition, but this is... I just cannot comprehend EA's lack of interest or effort in supporting the hardcore gaming community that they once made real games for, as well as made a fortune and good name for themselves from. Has greed really turned them to just tossing away their title as one of the biggest and most popular game developers and publishers ever? This game right here is definitive proof that EA isn't even trying anymore, and that's saddening.
