Godfather II roughs up retailers in February

Electronic Arts' latest lets gamers expand their turf beyond the Big Apple to Florida and Cuba.

Even before the first Godfather game was released in 2006, Electronic Arts was already talking sequels. In June, EA CEO John Riccitiello confirmed that the Godfather II is indeed on the way, and today the publisher fleshed out a few details on the game, including a release window and platforms.

Set to launch in February on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, The Godfather II is "inspired by the film and Mario Puzo's Corleone family drama." As in the film, the classic mob saga will be set against the backdrops of New York, Florida, and Cuba.

Players will once again roam open-world environments as the newly appointed Don of New York. In keeping with the new position of leadership, players will handle strategic organizational aspects of the mob, like establishing and maintaining criminal endeavors and creating a stable of Made Men.

That doesn't mean players won't get their hands dirty. Electronic Arts is promising "even more visceral hand-to-hand brutality," as well as new combo mechanics and more pressure tactics and executions.

For more on the first game, check out GameSpot's review.

[CORRECTION]: We originally reported that players would play as Michael Corleone. In fact, they play as a member of the family appointed to the Don of New York position by Corleone.

The first game was awsome the gameplay added a lot of unique things to the sand box genre. You dont need to like the film to play this game, i hope the gameplay is going to be as fun and unique as the first.

Never played part 1 and not going to touch part 2. Not when the director of the movies says its hogwash and trusting by EAs track record save for the Need for Speed series, I'll trust Francis Ford Coppola.

percypoo: from wot i can remember brando is not in godfather part two... so there will b no need for the dialouge! he was going to just have a cameo in the birthday scene, but apparently he wanted $250,000 and 10% of the box office for literally a 2 minute scene... so surprisingly the directors told him where to go!

A shame that Marlon Brando died a couple years ago, but if the game is in fact based on the film "The Godfather Part 2" then I suppose it could have some his dialouge.

Bought first game, I was very dissappointed. With GTA being so damn good, Godfather 2 has big shoes to fill to even compete in the sandbox areana.

Im saying that the Wii cannot handle this game. I imagine its going to be graphically very impressive and pushing both the 360 and ps3 hard. which means it has no chance of running on the wii.

and proman84 im with you mate. Mafia 2 is much more promising but who knows.

People were actually tricked into buying this game?
People really ARE naive I guess

No Wii version? The only thing that will be roughed up would be EA's pockets. Also, I am not passing the Wii off as a graphical beast, but do not say that the Wii cannot handle this game simply because other third-party developers throw Motion Control into the mix and try to warrant a $50 price tag.

There are two types of third-party Wii developers: The Harmonix-type (Downloadable content, Create-A-Character, online? Wii? NOT POSSIBLE!) and there is the Neversoft-type (we are looking at solutions for downloadable content and Guitar Hero III that came out months before Rockband had online. LOL!) Granted, I cannot stop people from buying crap like Deca Sports and Carnival Games, but I am sure that Harmonix is getting hit where it hurts.

EA + Open-World Crime game = No Purchase

I know EA has been getting better at giving developers the time and money they need to make better games, but that doesn't mean they have the hired help to actually accomplish tasks, such as building an open-world crime game. I was really put off of the first game and that really makes me not want to get into this new one. I'll save complete judgement for gameplay videos and a demo, but they'll have to really prove themselves before I even start to think of buying.

great news, i bought the limited edition for the ps2 back in the day and i put some 56 quality hours into this game, can't wait for part II.
though, i wonder how cuba and florida will work out, esp. after scarface, vice city and driv3r nailed those places.

I was pleasantly surprised with the first game. It was fun to play, all while doing the movie justice. Hopefully the second one will improve upon the flaws.
