Puzzle Quest expansion hits Xbox Live Arcade

Revenge of the Plague Lord available from July 23; adds new spells, items, and storyline.

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords was described during GameSpot's E3 2008 live show as one of the "sleeper hits" of 2007, when it became the best-selling puzzle franchise. The combination of an RPG storyline and gem-matching gameplay proved to be a critical hit and an addictive pastime for many, and Puzzle Quest has recently been added into the Xbox Live Arcade Hits programme.

It was revealed in March that there would be an expansion pack for the Xbox Live Arcade version of the game, which first came out on PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS. Publisher D3 has now confirmed that the expansion pack, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords - Revenge of the Plague Lord, will be available via Xbox Live Arcade in the US and Europe from Wednesday, July 23.

The expansion pack, previously known as Puzzle Quest 1.5, will cost 700 Microsoft points and promises "hours of additional gameplay." Four new hero professions will be available--bard, ranger, rogue, and warlock, and there will be "more than 50" new spells alongside 40 additional magical items. The level cap is lifted to level 60, and three new achievements will be on offer. The southern area of the map will become available, containing at least 25 quests related to a storyline around Antharg, Lord of Plague, who is the brother of Puzzle Quest's final boss, Lord Bane.

As demonstrated at E3 2008 last week, developer Infinite Interactive is also working on Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, which adds a sci-fi element and new gameplay mechanics. The game is due for release in 2009. For more information, see GameSpot's Puzzle Quest: Galactrix E3 2008 stage demo and preview.

Finally, a reason to turn on my 360 again. I thought it would stay dormant until Fable 2 came out. Still, 700 points? That's a bit much.

I never really downloaded the first game, but from what I hear, I have been missing out. I think now that its a "greatest hit" or whatever, I will get the game. Then I will wait until I beat it, and by that time, this expansion should be around 400 points. Way cheaper.

Like most people here, I thought Puzzle Quest was a great game, but I agree that 700 points for an expansion like that is too much. (Does it come with Oblivion-themed horse armor?) Lower it to 400 points and I'm sold.

Woo hoo! I *LOVE* this game, and I've gotten more hardcore into it since I got my new LCD television, which makes the game look amazing (well, as amazing as a puzzle game can, really).

This is such a great puzzle game. There aren’t many games where you can turn it on and play for a quick 10 minutes or play for 5 hour marathon. The 4 new class’s will be fun to try. I will be getting this for my 360 but too bad they couldnt have done something for the PSP. Puzzle Quest and FF Tactics are the perfect games for a train ride to work.

Was defo one of the much better titles on xbla. My only issue was the slight randomness caused by not being able to see any rows above the grid. I always thought it would make sense to have 1/2/3 rows visible (that you cant match with) just so you could use more strategy in making your moves and planning what was going to fall next.

How many times did you make a move and say "please dont drop a skull there, please dont drop a skull there, please dont dro... oh crap"

Sounds cool. I really should get back in to the game before buying an expansion for it. I got a 360 Elite recently, and Puzzle Quest is one of those games which won't allow you to back up its save files. Meaning I have to start again. I'm not bothered, 'cos it's a great game!

It's a very addictive game, but I'm not sure wheather I want to spend 700MS points when the actual game is 800MS points.

Zoe, the original is 1200 (Or was atleast). I assume it will be coming out tomorrow in Europe too, can't remember the last US exclusive XBLA game, if any at all.

700 points?! The original game is only 800! Also, why is it only in the US? Surely its not that hard to simultaneously release it as it's a digital download. Hmmm, I smell a rip-off.

I'm a huge fan of this game, its great for when I want to take a break from all my shooters, and just feel like a relaxing puzzle or two. I have this on my cell phone, 360, DS, and PSP, so I will be downloading the expansion tomorrow. At the very least the new classes will be interesting to try out.

Puzzle Quest is definitely one of the best titles available on XBLA, but 1200 MS (now 800) for the main game, plus 700 MS for the add-on is pushing the price too high

  • grognard

    Posted Jul 22, 2008 4:47 am PT

700 points? I've never seen anything priced at that level. I'd buy it for 400 points, but that is too high.
