Shippin' Out July 21-25: FFIV DS, 1942: Joint Strike

Square Enix's handheld RPG and Capcom's remake of its classic shooter top a light post-E3 release week, along with SIREN: Blood Curse and a trio of Wii VC games.

With the entire game industry nursing a post-E3 2008 hangover, most publishers wisely chose to steer clear of launching any major products this week. The main exception to this traditional rule is Final Fantasy IV for the Nintendo DS, an "enhanced remake" of the 1991 SNES game, which was later ported to the original PlayStation and the Game Boy Advance. (It was initially released under the title Final Fantasy II in North America.) With the help of Tokyo-based developer Matrix Software, which also remade Final Fantasy III for the DS in 2006, the game includes all-new graphics, cinematic camera style, and voice acting. GameSpot's glowing review also lauds Final Fantasy IV for its new augment system, which lets players customize their parties.

The week's other high-profile game is 1942: Joint Strike, a remake of Capcom's 1985 classic top-down, World War II-themed arcade shooter. Developed by Backbone Entertainment (Death Jr., Sonic Rivals), the game adds news levels, weapons, and power-ups, as well as overhauled graphics. Priced at $9.99, the game will be released as a digital download on Wednesday on Xbox Live Arcade and Thursday on the PlayStation Network. PlayStation 3 owners will also be treated to another digitally delivered game, the horror action adventure SIREN: Blood Curse.

In other downloadable content news, the Nintendo Wii gets three new downloadable games this week. Besides the WiiWare offering Oxygen Games' Pirates: The Key of Dreams ($10), which casts players as a cartoonish buccaneer, the platform's Virtual Console will be getting two Sega Genesis classics: 1993's Super Fantasy Zone and 1992's Gley Lancer.

Do not confuse Siren with Resident Evil just because they both got zombies in it. Siren offers a very distinct flavor especially the "sight-jack" feature.

Siren did look cool, but I played the demo and my friends and I agreed that it was just some crappy Resident Evil rip-off...

Although, I will be picking up my reserved copy of FFIV very shortly

I will be getting 1942 for sure and Siren looks interesting! This will be my last post on Gamespot. Nice talking to the few of you that had good topics to talk about. Tired of the fanboy stuff and the stupid posts on this site. To all of you rock on and continue gaming!!!

The new SIREN remake? Sweet, I hope this one is much better. I thought I'd hear more about this before it was released. I hope despite being under most peoples' radar it's actually worth it. So far it's averaging an 80% on GameRankings, with just three reviews of 70%, 80%, and 90%, so maybe I might just go pick this up since Alone in the Dark was critically disappointing. I'm watching gameplay videos now and it actually looks to be pretty good, I'm convinced I should pick this up on Thursday. Maybe you guys should look at the gameplay video too and see what you think. It'd be a shame if a good game got ignored by everyone, but it happens.

I'm surprised 1942 is considered more high profile than Siren; I guess multiplatform and older school nostalgia can account for that

1942 remake doesn't sound as good. the sountrack from original rocked. they should remake that in the game instead.

lol poor Karmacodelc18 I feel your pain friend I've been waiting for the Wii to get some solid games too but just like you I was let down.

Anyway this air plane game from Capcom maybe fun but I would be even more interested if they brought Final Fight to XBLA. Right now it seems like devs are fooling around. Not utilizing the Arcade market to it's fullest...

The only gaming drought I'm having is waiting for my 360 to get back from repairs. I have a huge backlog of games that are always waiting to be played, just like any other 360 owner.

Cant wait to try out 1942 in HD. This was one of my faves as a kid and I played it all the time with my bro.

A very dead week for sure besides the FF game for the DS. I don't mind much, gives me plenty of time to catch up with older games.
