E3 2008: Yakuza 2 collects September 9
Sega's underworld epic continues as the PS2 sequel finds its way to North America and Europe later this year.
While Sony spent the PlayStation 2 portion of its E3 Media & Business Summit press conference touting mass-appeal products like SingStar and Lego Batman, some companies think there's still money to be made with "hardcore" games on the system. Sega is one such outfit, as a representative with the publisher confirmed for GameSpot today that Yakuza 2 will arrive in North America and Europe on September 9.
The PS2 action game will pick up from the 2006 original, putting players once more in the stylish shoes of Kazuma Kiryu. Set in Tokyo and Osaka, the game lets players explore the seedy underworld of the Japanese mafia, including run-ins with the law, local gangs, and the Yakuza's Korean counterparts.
Sega is promising a game world twice the size of the original Yakuza, populated by real-life Japanese, nightclubs, bowling alleys, and other establishments. Other improvements set for the sequel include lessened load times and "smoother camera angles."
However the story of Yakuza 2 plays out, it won't be the end of the series. A Yakuza spin-off set 400 years ago has already been released for the PlayStation 3 in Japan, and a third proper installment of the series has also been announced.
