E3 2008: Warner Bros. GRINs at Wanted

Universal's Angelina Jolie action blockbuster heads to unnamed consoles, PC courtesy of Swedish developer later this year.

Universal Pictures' Wanted hit theaters on June 27, and upon its release, celebrity film critic Roger Ebert said, "That Wanted will someday be a video game, I have not the slightest doubt. It may already be a video game, but I'm damned if I'll look it up and find out." Had the critic done a search at the time of writing, he would have come up empty, but now his comments have turned out quite prescient.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced today that it will be adapting the Timur Bekmambetov-helmed Wanted to the interactive medium. Swedish outfit GRIN--developer of the PC editions of Ubisoft's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter series and Capcom's upcoming Bionic Commando games--has been tasked with creating the title for unnamed consoles and PC since early 2007, and WBIE expects Wanted to be released later this year.

Itself an adaptation of Mark Millar's graphic novel series, Wanted drew young men in droves to the box office last month, thanks to the thespian stylings of Angelina Jolie as well as Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy. The film tells the tale of an utterly unremarkable man with an office job who is conscripted by a secret order of assassins to kill a former member of their guild.

Running with this setup, the third-person shooter will drop players into the shoes of the film's protagonist, Wesley Gibson, and pick up where the movie left off. Players will be able to utilize many of the abilities Gibson developed throughout the course of the film--such as curving bullets and slow-motion "Assassin Time."

Did 300 got made into a game? If it hasnt then that would be the best graphic novel-movie to make into a game.

GRINs doing it...at least give it some credibility. I thought the movie itself was a bad idea, the comic books were great but another Eastern European director adapting a graphic novel/videogame into a movie wasn't really a recipe for movie magic, but to my surprise it turned out great! So why not give the 'game' a chance?

Granted, I found the movie entertaining (and that I found it entertaining disturbed me because the movie should really suck) but I can't imagine a game based on it being anything but suck.

Yet again, a movie studio decides that it can cash in on a film by releasing a tie-in game. Still, at least this time they have some actual time to develop it.

The game may be good. Don't forget that the developers don't have to rush to finish the game to coincide with the movie release.

I have never see nthe movie, so it's hard for me to comment on the game, except to remember the fact that movie to game transitions don't go well 3/4 times.

The developers have a lot of room to fill, i hope this game doesn't fail as failing videogames based on movies is one of the biggest reason i rarely really play games made from movies!!

Well, most movies get turned into games, especially the action and animated ones. We'll have to see how this one goes, though the odds are definitely against it.

well delongman said some true stuff if u gonna come out with games after movies then they need to be similar a good with not more then 5 flaws in the game. And one big one No Crappy graphics either!!!

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
    Have people not learned anything?!
Movie to games or games to movies usually fail. There are some exceptions but the success to fail rate is horrible. After reading this there is some sort of hope for this game, being as they are taking a page from Scarface and starting from the end of the movie. That way there won't be "That didn't happen in the movie! Q.Q", hopefully there will be a good storyline and gameplay to back this. Other than that this will end up on the list of failed movie to games. E.T anyone?

No movie-based game can rival Riddick... The day that happens we should have a "forum party" and make a "thank you...finally"-blog for the successful developer... Nowadays it's all about the cash... I hate it every time i watch a developer interview where a representative say a whole lot of crap-filled lies (oh there will be suprises....this is a unique experience...ok they may not say this but you get what i mean, right?). Then when the game comes out (for 60 bucks!!!!!!!) it get's between 4.5 or 7.5 but mostly 5.5. The devs should take their jobs seriously or not do the job at all... it's annoying to see potential thrown at us in trailers then to have nonsense polluting our consoles... I beg thee to differ

Roger Ebert needs to die in a fire. Seriously. Anyways, the movies action scenes were excellent and if they translate any of it successfully over to a video game, i'll be impressed.

    Posted Jul 16, 2008 11:42 am PT

Wow this one can go either way. I hope this one is an actual game and not trying to knock anything from the movie plot because those generally dont turn out good. I hope the game has voice acting from the amazing morgan freeman. Mr. Freeman is awsome and I have so much respect for him. he would be a great monologue for the video game. If they do this right then it could actually be a series of games that fans would definitely stand in line for. However if it is box office thing then it could go in the complete opposite direction. Only time will tell so we shall just wait and see.

i just got my gameinformer, and this game is supposed to take place after the movie ends, so im pretty sure angelina wont be in here. but i hope this isnt another terrible movie game, i really hope this is gonna be a sweet game, because the movie was awesome. also there is an awsome costume that gibson wears from the original comics, its awesome

    Posted Jul 16, 2008 11:25 am PT

at least it isnt a adaptation of the film,
alot of film movies come out during the film and the game isnt allowed to spoil to much. This is a much smarter move to relese the game after the movie

  • ctg867

    Posted Jul 16, 2008 11:19 am PT

I wonder how the hell this is gonna turn out. Traditionally, movie games that aren't forced to come out on the movies release end up being a lot better. Ie: The Chronicles of Riddick. But then again this could be nothing like that.

Even though the action in this is extremely over exaggerated, it reminds me a tiny bit of some of the things that Eight Days could of been if it wasn't canceled. Not really sure why though....
