E3 2008: Solid Snake actor writing Lost Planet movie

Capcom's arctic action game reportedly set to hit the silver screen, courtesy of Warner Bros.--with David Hayter penning the screenplay.

Capcom is expanding its push into Hollywood, according to the Hollywood trade paper Variety. Not content with a new Street Fighter movie and the possibility of a fourth Resident Evil flick, the publisher has reportedly signed a deal with Warner Bros. that will see the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC action game Lost Planet: Extreme Condition hit the big screen.

The movie will apparently be produced by Seaside Entertainment (likely in conjunction with Capcom), and the screenplay assignment for the project has gone to David Hayter. Familiar to gamers as the voice of Solid Snake in Konami's Metal Gear Solid series, Hayter has a wealth of experience as a writer, having penned the upcoming film adaptation of DC Comics' Watchmen, as well as the first two X-Men movies.

The article didn't discuss possible casting, storylines, or release dates, but the location is likely set in stone (or snow, as it were). The game's defining characteristic was its frigid setting, a planet in the midst of a brutal ice age and populated by menacing aliens.

The film is expected to be announced formally during Capcom's E3 Media & Business Summit press conference Tuesday afternoon.

lost planet had a really confusing story...they'll have to do a lot of work. Also, I'm a bit concerend about video game stories turning into movies...I've seen Hitman and Lara Crof (wrong spelling, I know) both of which lacked....in well just about every category except action...and a movie a pure action isn't much of a movie.

Who cares about metal gear, you already have a movie. Its called MGS4, in case anyone here besides Hokkie didnt notice.

I wasn't a huge fan of the game to be honest, I found it kind of boring, but the movie could be cool if done correctly.

I don't think that Lost Planet deserves a movie yet. If they could make a couple more sequels and make them better than the first, I guess that I could go for it.

this sounds promising...someone in the videogame industry would know more about making a good game based movie than some hollywood yokel.

David Hayter has worked on some ok and some good movies so this looks promising. Scorpion King was ok but X2 was a great movie.

Who cares about Metal Gear, we want LOST PLANET!!

Anyway, david obviously has talent in acting/writing, so hopefully he can pull this off. My only requirement is that he can really flesh out the story and characters much more than the game did. I thought lost planet had the potential to have an amazing story, but it wasnt fully realized in the game. Hopefully the movie can change that and become a much better videogame movie than resident evil and the Uwe Boll movies (Ok I positive he can do better than uwe boll).

WTF does MGS have to do with this? He just does Snake's voice, but he's putting that aside and writing a movie.

Has Hayter done work for Capcom before? Voices and whatnot?

    Also, Crab Battle

That's pretty cool, and I'd go as a far as to say that a Lost Planet movie could probably turn out better than any other game movie in the works right now without taking too much effort.

Going with David Hayter I don't think they can go wrong here. I think it is a strange choice of a game to make into a movie, but you never know with these things.

  • phase4illini

    Posted Jul 15, 2008 8:20 am PT

Hayter did a pretty good job with X-Men 1&2. I think he's probably got as good a shot as anyone at making this a movie that everyone can enjoy. I agree that he should be pretty well involved if they ever get around to making the MGS movie.

And look at the bright side... at least Uwe Bowel-movement doesn't seem to be anywhere near this one.

I wonder how good of an actor David Hayter would be.Not just a voice actor.

  • DontEatCream

    Posted Jul 15, 2008 8:14 am PT

I can think of a dozen better franchises to make a movie with, but hey, having David Hayter writing the screenplay makes it a little more... comprehensible.

The man wrote X-men and X-men 2! He has talent. And he wrote the upcoming Watchman film. Alan Moore actually LIKED David Hayter's script for Watchman! The man knows how to write.

I heard his script was turned down for the MGS movie. and he actually isnt penning watchmen. he wrote a draft and some other guy is reworking it. he still is credited for it though.

I actually thought the story had potential. In the game it wasn't really developed well. It is good to see that they're giving it another chance. I hope they're able to do a little more on the second attempt.
