E3 2008: Final Fantasy XIII 360-bound, Last Remnant dated

Square Enix's formerly PS3-only RPG epic will launch day and date on Microsoft's console in North America and Europe; 360 exclusive hitting US November 20.

LOS ANGELES--At the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Microsoft presented what it thought was a major announcement from a top Japanese developer, Square Enix. Unfortunately, the "news" proved a tad anticlimactic, considering that the game in question was Final Fantasy XI, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game previously released on the PC in 2003 and the PlayStation 2 in 2004. Despite a sizeable PR push, the 360 edition of the game was lukewarmly received by critics and consumers, who barely bought 213,000 copies of it in the US.

Over the next three years, Microsoft would announce several more Square Enix games for the Xbox 360, including the exclusive Star Ocean: The Last Hope and the timed exclusive The Last Remnant. However, in many gamers' minds these projects were dwarfed in importance by the stature of two other Square Enix games: Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII Versus, both PlayStation 3 exclusives...

...until today.

This morning at its press briefing at the E3 Media & Business Summit, Microsoft stunned many in the audience by announcing that Final Fantasy XIII is now in development for the Xbox 360. Not only is the game coming to the console, but it will arrive on the same day and date as the PlayStation 3 edition of the game, with no timed exclusivity of any kind. However, when exactly that is remains a mystery, given that the graphics-intensive role-playing game still has no firm release date.

"We believe that releasing an Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII will allow us to provide the game to even more fans in the two regions of North America and Europe," Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada told a stunned audience. No mentioned was made of Japan, where the 360 is far less popular than the PS3.

Wada also used today's event to announced the release date of the timed 360-exclusive Last Remnant as being November 20 in North America. (It will arrive on the PS3 in 2009.) Square Enix's 360 exclusive, Infinite Undiscovery, will ship in North America on September 2, Europe and the UK on September 5, and Japan and Asia on September 11.

    oh wow....why do all the best RPG's go to X360!!!!! The main reason i bought the F***king PS3 is to play JRPG's which one could have assumed would be PS3 titles, perhaps even exclusively. WTF SquareEnix!!

    And btw, it is possible to port any game to any system. I mean M$ could port Halo to the Sega CD!, if they really wanted to LOL. It might not look as good and might need a completely new engine(yikes in the case of Sega CD), but it is entirely possible... LOL... sega cd....

    Hey guys arguing over witch system is better is pointless. They are all great for different reasons, and it really comes down to what games you enjoy. Halo 3, MGS4, Zelda.... all great games. Dont pick one or the other just b/c you think "Sony sux" or "M$ sux". What a waste of time.

    dbmcart - The PS3 is a PS2 and PS1 in one machine, wake up dude. Any, i mean any 360 game can be perfectly ported to the PS3, but not all PS3 games can be ported to the 360, thats the bottom line. Cell is twice mowerful than the 360 Xenon CPU, with RSX about the same as the Xenos. Bluray multplies this factor. This is the moment all 360 fans have dreaded admit it, PS3 has that extra 6th gear, whilst 360 only has a fifth gear lol.

    But the 360 is an excellent games machine to be fair, im no fanboy.

    Plz MGS4 not possible on 360. Thats just Sony talking, Actually PS3 hasn't beaten 360 in a competion since the two systems came out. Between the PS3 and the PS2 the PS2 was better. Geez man ur just a playstation fanboy. I didn't even like the original xbox and I know the 360 is better.

    Skiggy80 - you need to look at the grand scheme of things mate, keep your PS3, MGS4 will never appear on the 360 as its physically impossible by hardware. Now that should give you a hint of things to come, and im sure the bit when Otacan literally takes the p%$s out of the 360 must make you think a bit. The 360 really and truelly competes with the PS2 now, as bluray has shot the PS3 into another market now, the big blockbuster games market of 30+ GB data. MGS4 audio alone is almost 6GB of dolby trueHD, does the 360 really want to live in the ps3's shadow by offering massivly compressed ports? Quality = £££, thats why the ps3 is more expensive and always will be, before anyone brings costs up. FF is gonna be a heavily compress port on the 360, again do 360 owners want a diluted version?

    Ha HA!! I knew this was going to happen. Look back in any of my posts from 6 or 7 months ago and when DMC4 came out also for 360 I predicted that FF would also. WOW, Sony is really crapping down the throats of their fans. i am a Sony fan and I own a PS3 but now I may sell the damn this because there were 2 games I wanted for it that were "supposed" to be PS3 exclusives. DMC4 and FF. Now that they are on my favorite system, i might sell my PS3 to get rid of my wire clutter. Damn, what a surprize!! Sony better hope God of Wart, Socom and Resistance 2 are any good. God of War will be and I really look forward to that, but then Microsoft has this Too Human game that I tried which is just like God of War and could possibly be better. Who knows, all I know is this generation is nowhere near last generation and Sony is "just another console" now. 360 is the console of choice for hardcore gamers and it would only have been a stupid move for Square to make it exclusive to Sony. Now i will sit back and wait for a MGS4 to arrive on the 360 and if its not MGS4, it will be some kind of MGS. i have MGS4 for PS3 and it is a great game, not the best by far!! Lots of pointless features. Anyway congrats 360 fans and bummer PS3 fans!

    homestarmy - thats your opinion about MSG4, but to say it sucks... sounds very 360 fanboyish to me, how far have you played into the game? You dont see whats great with it...erm the graphics with seamless blend between gameplay and cutscenes, the story, snake, the characters, the art work, the audio, the weapons, the octosuit, the bosses, the gadgets but most of all the COMBAT.. and its not supposed to be a combat intense game lol. Just accept it 360 owners, you are seriously bummed that the PS3 has got the best game at the moment bar none, and are worried what lies ahead. When are 360 owners gonna realise, the only reason they had any success at all, was because there was no competition, but sony are back to rightly take back their crown, which has been warmed nicely by the 360.

    know this is late put ps3.....Assassin's Creed and GTA were not exclusive to the PS3. Oh and just because Square went to Sony with FF7 doesn't mean that they have exclusive rights. They needed a disc format and only stuck with Sony because MS didn't join the fray until after PS2 had been out over a year. Only 3 games released in the last generation 2 being full fledged sequals at the beginning and end of the PS2 life cycle. It was only a matter of time before MS got some action

    Sory but i've played mgs4 and no I'm no fan boy because I have both systems and it's just not that great. totally overrated its like another gta4 rating. i just dont see what is so great about it. also if you have seen the compared shots of multi console games, there has been some games where ps3 hasnt owned up to what the xbox throws out there for some games but the ps3 has games that show out the 360 two. my main point was that people are saying that since its a multi game it doesnt really matter graphically because they are going to be the same and it isnt gonna affect the graphical quality of the game. you can argue with me all you want about mgs4 but im sorry im not gonna change my opinion that game sucks

    09231991 - GOW3 WILL be coming to the PS3, its been confirmed by epic as the deal with MS was for the first 2 only, dude, i didnt write that for nothing. It also featured at the last E3, with a special video at the sony stand, be afraid be very afraid. You mentioned Mass effect, erm thats coming to the PS3 as well dude, the whole series, in the same way all HD DVD exlusive HD movies are all coming over to bluray (because HD DVD is extinct), see a pattern emerging anyone. One thing i can agree with you though, is Crysis, no game will appear on any console that comes close to it, but MGS4 is very close, just play act 3 and you'll know what i mean. Overall though, you have to admit, it looks like mainstream games wil appear on 360/wii/ps2, but the real big blockbusters that take 20GB or more data, are only gonna be on PS3 and PC (PC can utlilize bluray). Disc swapping is just not an option, in the real next gen world im afraid. You mentioned the install process, that JUST NOW been implemented in the 360, how is it going to work with multiple DVD's, not very well. Bluray 100 gb is coming soon, i feel sorry for DVD i really do.

    You seriously have the worst comprehension skills I've ever seen on this site. The fact that FFXIII is going multiplatform means that it wasn't owned by Sony. If Sony owned the rights to FFXIII specifically, then SE never would have made it go multiplatform so the fact that it is means that they didn't pay for it. Sony does not own SE, they don't own FF and they didn't pay for the rights for FFXIII.

    And when did I say Mass Effect was better than MGS 4? This is what I EXACTLY said - "I agree with you that MGS 4 looks better than Bioshock and Gears of War but there is one more game on the 360 that looks just as good if not better than MGS 4 and thats Mass Effect. As you can see, I didn't say Mass Effect was a better game, I said in terms of visuals, it was on par if not better than MGS4. In terms of which ones better, I haven't played either so I can't say. As for the DMC 4 thing, I never heard of them complaining about wanting Dead Rising, all I knew was that they wanted the 360 version of DMC 4 banned. They are making a port version of DR for the wii but its really crappy and watered down.

    As for the ports, The PS3 gets FAR MORE watered down ports than the 360. As for Ninja Gaiden, are you kidding me? The original Ninja Gaiden was for the original Xbox so of course it would look better on a next-gen system. But it doesn't matter, cause we have the exclusive, better looking and playing NG 2 so it doesn't bother me at all. And what the hell are you talking about, CD's? MS uses dual layer DVD's that hold 9 gigs. And as for Gears of War, Gears of War 1 was published by MS making it exclusive and so is Gears of War 2 so no Gears for you my friend.

    There's absolutely nothing wrong with having FFXIII on both consoles. Heck square can even port it for Wii. I remember back in the16-bit days "exclusive" games weren't such a big deal. 3rd party devs always put out games on both systems. No such thing as release intervals between the systems, the games came out exactly the same time! For me this is actually healthy competition.

    Also, the PS3 has gotten quite a few watered down ports in the past and even a little to this day as well. The dual-layer DVD has proven to be enough room for practically every game except for just a few and they still look great. The only games that are more than one disc was Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey but they still looked great. The only game to every just barely fit on the dual layer DVD was GTA IV because of how big the game was. The reason why is because MS is, I guess you could say, a master of compression. And why bring up GOW 3? GOW 2 isn't even out yet and your saying GOW 3 will be better on PS3. In fact, I seriously doubt Epic will do anymore work with Sony seeing as how bad UT III went on their system so I think by default GOW 3 will be exclusive and if not, MS will publish the third one just like they did with GOW 1 and now 2. And in the case of having installed games, the 360 is getting that at the end of the year and a better version at that. They already tested it out and have found it to be more effective than Sony's installation process. One example would be DMC 4 installed in a matter of 10 minutes on the 360 while the PS3 version takes roughly 30 minutes.

    homestarmy6 - Mate, MGS4 is better graphically (in fact every way) than both GOW and Bioshock put together, where have u been the past month. Lets get this straight, there is no game on this planet right now, on any system, that can compare to MGS4 (except for maybe Crysis), in fact it should be the first game to get an oscar, its that good.

    Also the PS3 will never get a watered down version of any game, 360 ports maybe, but always the full version or even better. The 360's technical bottlenecks however, means it may get watered down versions due to the limits of DVD. GoW3 may actually be 'better' on the PS3 as bluray allows more levels, more HD content, better sound etc, plus installed on th HD means faster frame rates, oh dear me.

    Has anyone seen the poster ad for "ferrari challenge", it clearly states "this game cannot be done on the 360", i think this may be the sign for the future. (very funny when the game features the awesome Ferrari 360 lol, ironic aint it)

    2.dmc4 i never played i dont care 4 it send it 2 360 4 all i care and capcon losing extra money is on them put out more games worth playing.

    3.gta4 was brought out by m$ i didnt care becuz it kinda sucked it wouldnt move systems so it was a waste and take-two is still messed up

    Anyways, all the points that you keep saying about how MS steals exclusives from Sony is completely and utterly stupid. You obviously know nothing of these games, do you? 1. Assassin's Creed was gonna be set as a PS3 exclusive as you said BUT as stated a while ago, Sony NEVER ponied up money for exclusivity so whats it worth to the company to keep it exclusive and lose out potentially a lot of money if they aren't getting paid for exclusivity? Assassin's Creed did better on the 360 so if Ubi would have kept it exclusive, they would have probably made less than half of what they made. Did you want that to happen to them? 2. DMC 4 was whined about when it was announced to come to the 360 and PC by a lot of PS3 fanboys. In fact, PS3 fanbabies even went as far as to have a signed petition and send it to Capcom to make them stop production of the 360 and PC versions but it was all for nothing. Anyways, DMC 4 WAS slated as a PS3 exclusive, but again, Sony didn't pay for exclusivity so Capcom didn't feel the need to lose out on potentially a lot of extra money. The PS3 version did sell a little better than the 360 version but not by much. Did you also want Capcom to lose out on extra money to, hmmm? 3. GTA IV was going to be slated as a PS3 exclusive but again, Sony didn't pay for exclusivity so again, what was TT's purpose to keep what could potentially be the year's biggest game and lose out on a ton of money? In fact, about a week after GTA IV went on sale, 60% of sales were due to that of the 360. By now that number probably has increased so if TT kept it exclusive without getting paid by Sony, they would have lost out on a ****load of money which is what they needed at the time. So again, do YOU want TT to lose out on a lot of money? And lastly 4. FFXIII was slated as a PS3 exclusive but again, Sony DID NOT pay for exclusivity so what was SE's purpose of keeping it exclusive to one system? So the fact that you keep saying that MS "STOLE" these exclusives is pretty much a dead point. It would ONLY be stealing if Sony ALREADY paid for exclusivity AND then MS came in and offered more money later on and bought the game away from them, which never happened so its not stealing, its called getting a bigger fanbase and making more money, thats it. The things you say basically are what other Sony fanbabies tell you and take it like the whole truth without having any facts (or proper english) to back you up. I mean, we've lost exclusives to you guys as well. Remember Enchanted Arms? That game was a 360 exclusive but MS never paid for the exclusivity so the company figured lets make more money by porting it to another system. Do you also remember Eternal Sonata? Eternal Sonata was also a 360 exclusive but later this year, the PS3 is getting an improved version of the game. Also, do you remember Bioshock? That was also a 360 exclusive but again, MS didn't pay for FULL exclusivity rights, only temporary so the company is porting it later this year. Other games include the Condemned and Saints Row sequels. So before you go crying and whining about all the exclusives MS "supposedly" stole, look at the whole facts before making snap judgments.

    This makes my day, no make that year! I will still pick up a ps3 (eventually), but this means that I will be able to buy this game even if I don't get a ps3 by the time it is released. Money is tight right now, and this makes it a lot easier for a die hard Final Fantasy fan that doesn't have a ps3 yet.

    I really don't care about which console is better than the other, kinda a moot point don't you think? Being available on both platforms is a win/win for squenix and the consumers. You have a ps3, I have a 360, we both love Final Fantasy games, and we will both get the opportunity to do so without having to shell out big bucks for the other system. Would the ps3 fan boys be upset if a 360 exclusive was made multiplatform? I doubt it. Would I, a Xbox360 owner, be upset? No, because honestly there is nothing to be upset over. The more money the company makes, the more (and better) games they can make. We all win, period.

    i kno 360 has more users HEAD START BY A YEAR but anyway drakes forturne,resistence, rachet and clank, mgs4, siren blood curse{somethin like silent hill but better} and etc theres pleny of reasons 2 come 2 the ps3 and a built in blue ray disc player with free online play and a movie store.

    gta4 was overated by alot san andreas was way better den that. gta4 has amazing graphics and boring missions that doesnt mix right i heard about dmc4 but i wanted 2 buy it but i changed my mind didnt really care for it. point im trying 2 make is m$ steals alot of exclusives dmc4{dont care for it}gta4,assanissans creed,final fantasy,la noire etc

    Jesus Christ. PS3thaBest. Next time you want to make some sort of a coherent point, at least use some sort of proper English. As stated earlier Square started out on Nintendo. It moved to Sony and now its coming to MS. Look at the 360 catalog. The 360 has had more Square Enix games than the PS3. Althought mostly mediocre, these were still the building blocks set into place for this announcement. Sony didn't save SquareEnix after FF:SW. That was their own venture and they pulled themselves up by their bootstraps. Learn a little about SquareEnix's history before you go shouting off at the mouth like that. I swear. PS3 fanboys have been up in arms since they lost exclusivity with DMC4. Hell at one point even Kojima hinted at the possibility of making MGS4 cross platform. Guess Sony wasn't having it. It makes no sense. 360 owners more than double the amount of PS3 owners. Though they still aren't small numbers by far, from a financial stand point why wouldn't you cater to both platforms. I commend Square Enix for stepping up and doing the right thing. The game will not be any worse. It will still have the quality and entertainment expected from a great franchise. Look at the success of GTA 4. The first week sales were ridiculous. Why shouldn't FFXIII have the same success? I too kept trying to find a real reason to invest in the PS3. And let's really face. MGS 4 can't be that only reason. Sony set out with high hopes and expectations but I think they're going the way of Sega with its console. Looking at the tech side, the PS3 has amazing capabilities that hasn't been tapped into yet. Its not a bad console by far. Maybe Sony was just pushing way too hard before its time. Then again that's just my opinion. In the end its not about "my console is better than yours" To real gamers its about the games. So please stop crying and grow up a little. No one said nothing when the GC lost its exclusivity with RE4 after the title released. Do you think that RE 5 would be so highly sought after if it didn't have all the extra exposure on the PS2 and PC?? No. I didn't think so either.

    Really was looking forward to more than just 1 game when i bought the ps3, could care less what people say with their "Console Wars" Xbox this, ps3 that. i prefered the ps3 for the controler type and i had no problems with the ps2 when i bought it. personally i think their should be No Exclusives and equal gaming selection acrost the board so that the buyers will not feel obligated to buy for one or the other but for personal preference. As long as FF and all them titiles are still on the ps3 i'm happy, and congrats to xbox players for getting some more selection. DS

    Final Fantasy XIII, Tekken 6, and Resistance 2 were my reasons to get a PS3 this winter. FFXIII being the main reason. I am pretty shocked MS wrestled away such a massive exclusive. I gotta say I love my 360 and now that Square Enix is branching out I can save 400 dollars and get back into a series I thought I would never get to play for a long time.

    Oh and to add onto my point that it does not matter what system its on...for all you ps3 fanboys out there, the 360 has graphic capabilities, just look at gears of war...I'm sorry but I still have not seen a game that beautiful besides bioshock and still had no frame rate issues and ps3 has yet to make a game that looks as good as those two did...so really this being on two consoles will not affect how the game looks...

    Wow guys seriously...
    Who freakin cares what system it is on really it doesn't make the games any worse. Both systems also have the same capabilities as the other...I am sorry but I have played both systems and see no difference. It all is a little game they play with people's minds. I mean when the very first xbox came out, it was suppose to be better than the ps2 and gamecube. Well I'm sorry it is the same exact thing, all of em were the same as far as graphics and performance went and there was no difference. So really who cares about which console is better and what games have to be on which system because it DOESNT MATTER! They are all the same...and for those ps3 owners who only bought it for this game then I laugh at you because if you were looking at the games that were suppose to be only for ps3 before the system came out...most of em switched to being multi platform and it was only a matter of time before this game switched as well...
