Aussie game charts: June 23-29

Metal Gear Solid 4: Snake eaten. Super Smash Bros. Brawl reigns supreme.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has spent the last two weeks at the top position of the Australian game charts. However, despite the initial fanfare of Solid Snake's final adventure, highly anticipated fighter Super Smash Bros. Brawl has stolen the limelight this week, clinching the top spot in its debut down under. Mario and his crew--which includes Solid Snake as a playable character--have moved into the coveted first position, seeing MGS4 plummet to sixth place overall.

Nintendo will be happy with the week of June 23 to 29 because, according to Australian data tracker GfK Australia, the company held six of the 10 overall sales positions--the top three going to titles on its family-friendly Wii console and the remainder going to its popular DS handheld. Despite the risk of dropping off the list entirely last week in ninth place, Wii Fit has clawed its way back to finish the week in second. Nintendo's Wii Play hardware bundle finished third overall. The Xbox 360 version of Battlefield: Bad Company was the only title to wave the Microsoft flag this week, finishing fourth overall, while the PlayStation 3 version of the military shooter managed seventh. The hand-cramp-causing portable version of rhythm game Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS rocked out and made fifth place in its first week on sale. Grand Theft Auto IV floundered on the PlayStation 3 this week, dropping two places to sit at number eight. Despite strong sales last week, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time were able to muster only ninth and 10th, respectively.
