Sony patents new motion-control, touch-screen tech

USPTO applications detail alternative input schemes for "handheld electronic devices."

Sony and Nintendo stand in polar opposition in regard to their outlook on technology in this generation of gaming hardware. Rather than rearming to match Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo opted for lower-cost components and alternative input schemes for the Wii and DS. Sony, on the other hand, chose to invest in hardware that has been as expensive to create as it has been to buy. With Nintendo announcing record profits and Sony fighting to get its games division back in the black, the near-term winner of that decision has proven to be self-evident.

However, as this generation continues to play out in Nintendo's favor, Sony may be taking a few cues from its competitor's playbook for future iterations of its PlayStation and PlayStation Portable hardware. According to a pair of recently published patent applications filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Sony is eyeing input devices that look to expand on current touch-screen and motion-sensing utilities currently employed in the gaming sector.

Though much of both patents are written in a suitably esoteric language ("The actuatable portion is actuatable by the actuator between first and second positions"), the first application justifies its existence by noting that while "existing touch screens are configured to receive a mechanical input and provide a visible output," they "are not configured to provide both a visible and a mechanical output."

The application then proceeds to describe a device that provides a touch-feedback sensation upon contact with a touch screen. The device described is not limited to a single screen, and may be used for a variety of applications, including "a gaming device, a phone, a portable media player, an email device, web browser device, or navigation device."

The second application filed by Harrison details a handheld unit that transfers images from a second device through gestures. Once transferred, the images appear on both the handheld device's touch screen and the original machine's screen. As with the first patent application, the device can be a "gaming device, phone, portable media player, email device, web browser device, or navigation device."

Both applications were submitted for review by former Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison in January, but were only made public late last week.

Although it's good to have the whole touch thing integrated with motion sensing, it is awfully similar to current systems of ds and wii as has already been pointed out. Not that I necessarily think it's a bad thing for sony to include motion/touch sensing in their gaming as well, just as long as they go one further.
Everyone so far that has paid out sony has just been complaining and criticising sony for copying and said they should "come up with their own ideas" but have put forward nothing. If you're going to say they should do more, either make a suggestion or stop pretending to have the authority to pay them out for somethin u couldn'lt do yourself.
Well I hav an idea for suggestion.
On The New Inventors, a man's invention was recently featured which is placed on your head and picks up the electrical signals from your brain when you move...so wearing just this headpiece you can make a grabbing action and suddenly you've grabbed a tree...I really don't know why his device hasn't exploded into the world in even more avenues than just gaming, but if sony locks onto that technology first then it could get well ahead of nintendo.

A touch screen that touches you back? Sounds interesting but for a portable gaming console its going to be a huge drain on the battery.

Give Sony a break..lol, they are very confused. The PS and PS2 were the weaker systems of their generations but they still came out on top. The Wii is the weakest system this gen and its on top....The moral of the story.....The weakest system always comes out on top, heehee. The reason why Nintendo's stuff sells is not because its got motion sensitive controllers...Its because the games are easy and accessible to a wide variety of people and ages. I prefer the PS3 and Xbox controllers to the Wii one because waving that thing around is a pain in the backside. Copying Nintendo's ideas has worked for them in the past but what Sony should be doing this time is identifying ways to make the PS3 sell better...There is nothing wrong with the PS3 or PSP hardware. What they should do is get more exclusive great games.

What REALLY pisses me off is that Sony is ALWAYS trying to copy Nintendo, which is why I hope Nintendo buys them out. I mean, Sony basically has taken over the graphics for the consoles, and I'm starting to get pissed off at Nintendo because they are currently losing the race for the best graphics. Problem is, I only have consoles and handhelds which are made by Nintendo. I'm not ready for a total transition yet (which is good because I don't plan on buying a Sony console).

Anyway, I hope Nintendo is getting a little heated that Sony is pulling off every trick in the book that Nintendo has and is making it look better (maybe) and work better (probably not).

Oh please... Nintendo has copied just as hard, the only difference is that Sony made a few things popular.

There are very few things in this world that are still truely original, most things are just copied or heavily based on other things.

    Sony Wii-S?

But seriously, Sony can shove it until they start getting some decent new IP's rather than the remakes and sequels that have plagued them since the PS1's dying days. (With certain exceptions of course, such as God of War and Ratchet and Clank)

Shalafein... did you actually read the description? Sony wouldn't be able to patent it if it'd already been done, this is something more advanced.

Either way I think it sucks that this stuff is being grabbed by Sony, when clearly this is the way technology is going and would be better off shared among everyone.

But thanks guys, I'd rather watch my games on a clear display and not on through the oily and clamy hand prints of my last game heheheh...

The whole touchscreen control device sounds like an iPhone rip-off to me, which would make sense given Apple's touting of third-party game developers at WWDC.

    Petri87,

That's why Nintendo brings the VC. I was unfortunately not born into the Golden Era of gaming, but with the VC, I am actually able to play Ocarina of TIme, Super Mario 64, Paper mario, F-Zero X, and then there are all those WiiWare games like LostWinds, Gyrostarr and FFCC: My Life as King. As soon as I get Goldeneye 007 on the N64 LIKE ITS MEANT TO BE >_____________> (sorry, Rareware should've stayed with Nintendo, IMO), and Super Smash Brothers 64, I highly doubt I could be happier.

For you to claim *all* of the Smash Brothers have been abominations, I'd say you're the abomination to make such a comment.

    @haloshalo
    You are so right

When sony released the PS-X it had the same button arrangement as the SNES controller.

Then when Nintendo released the N64 with a thumb stick PS fans called the thumb stick dumb and, said it breaks all the time; until the Sony put out a new controller with two thumb sticks that became the standard.

Three months after the N64 was released Nintendo introduced the rumble pack that for the N64 controller and PS fans said it was dumb until two years later sony redesigned the PS controller to have its own motor in the controller and PS fans boasted the PS version was superior.

And in the current generation one PS fan told me the Wii was goofy no doubt the new PS3 controller will change his mind.

to d_beast, I also own 2 out of the 3 big consoles and both the handhelds. I am missing the X-box because I figure it this way, all of Microsofts "big" games usually come out on PC anyway and apparently ..I have one of those!.. so I can play them that way. Then I still have my PS3 for all of it's exclusives and I'm getting the best of both worlds. However sadly the only people who ever turn on the Wii are children, and last time I looked I was a girl and it doesn't interest me. I have just about the same level of interest in my D.S, I used it for pokemon and the remade FF and it has basically collected dust on the shelf ever since. I do see eye to eye with you on the fact that I couldn't live without my PSP. I am never without it.

Yeah, you're right, Smurf66, no one has won two generations in a row. Oh wait, Nintendo did with the original NES and the Super NES. It was behind for a while against the Genesis, but it came out as a winner in that generation. I am not bitter that Sony won the last gen, the PS2 is a great gaming device and I own one. I am just saying overall it is overrated as a company and its products are overpriced for what you get. To Infrared13, Nintendo comes out with new IPs all the time. In the SNES generation it created Super Mario Kart and Star Fox. In the N64 generation, it created the Paper Mario series. In the Gamecube generation it created Pikmin. It just does things slowly over time (and still takes a lot more chances than Blizzard, and everyone loves that company). Also the Wii is still early in its lifetime, and its greatest games are still ahead. The DS did not have that many great games at first, but look at it now. If by "forward" you mean graphics, then that is your opinion. I am guessing you would never be able to go back and play something on the SNES and still have a good time, despite the excellent gameplay still on that system. The 360 and PS3 both have fun games, but besides prettier graphics, neither do much that their last generation parents did. The Wii does a lot different. And what is up with people saying there are no good games on the Wii? Hmm, Twilight Princess, Metroid Corruption, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario, Mario Kart Wii, Smash Bros. Brawl, No More Heroes, Zak and Wiki, Resident Evil 4 redux, and many more - those alone are more than the PS3 has managed to come up with. Nintendo does rely on its same franchises sometimes, but it revolutionizes them as well. Halo 3 is not that different from Halo 2 I may point out, and Halo 2 is about the same compared to Halo 1. Twlight Princess and Wind Waker meanwhile are about as different as you can get even though they are both Zelda titles. And most importantly they are fun! And to your "history," yes Nintendo did backstab Sony, but it was the right decision for them. If Sony had taken creative control over Nintendo's titles, Nintendo's creative decisions would have suffered. It cost them a couple generations, but they are on the right path now.

@shawn_mcwayne - Thank you for an opinion based in experience and level headedness rather than ignorance. The only thing hurting Sony right now is their excessive arrogance leading into this console gen. The games are there on the PS3, but public perception is a tough beast to beat (just ask SEGA!!). Ken Kutaragi made it sound like the PS3 could do everything short of fold your laundry in all the pre release hype, and then when the thing hit, everyone realized that it was just a new console, not the savior of mankind that it was made out to be. All that having been said, as soon as I have the money free, I do want to get one, as I already have the 360, Wii, PSP, and DS. In the end, it all boils down to the games...

Why can't this stuff stay one the Wii. Most ppl that buy a PS3 and a 360 are those that want to play games the same way they have done for about 17y(since the analog stick for the N64 came out). If I'd want to do something where I throw my hands around then I would go play tennis or baseball or painball.
I use games to relax after 9h of work and have some fun while doing it.
I also play football(the real kind) a couple of times a week so I'm not sitting on my *** doing nothing but play games.
Wiii is for those ppl that don't play games or serious Nintendo fanboys that cry because they got the short tech stick this time around.
Im not going to spend 250 on something that for one has dissepointing sequals to great games(SMG only exeption, SSBB sucks just like all the previous ones), have old tech in it that you can get buy busting open you GC. third, over simplifies games to such a degree that they aren't challenging at all and therefor no fun. And forth, won't get any of the real AAA games coming out. You get PS2 ports and half-***ed third pary games that are mostly not even real full games.

No other (ex)Nintendo fan is saying this so I will. The Wii is a smack tothe face for those old school Nintendo fans.

It is not a copy if it does more. @ infrared13 I couldn't agree with you more. I like moving forward with technology. I am not dissing the Wii though because it is for a different set of gamers and people who never gamed before are now buying a Wii. It may also turn a couple of them to buy a 360 or PS3 down the line.

... corporations steal from other corporations, it is how they make money. If you are losing money to something that someone else has, take it and try to make it better, Apple's OS and Microsoft's Vista is an example. It is a smart business move. If you guys want to argue that one corporation stole from the other thus they are uncool then I could just say, Sony used DVD's first, Nintendo and Microsoft copied.

like really people who cares, i applaud Sony for trying to better an existing technology and give US a better experience with our electronics.

Improved technology allowed Sony to shrink the size of the system, increase the size of the screen, and increase the system's speed. The price was dropped because the system had been on the market for years, and because sales were not very high. Now answer me this, and tell me you're not a hypocrite.

    hey WHITE_MAGE

“ It took Nintendo over a decade to get their revenge at having the video game industry stolen from them,” - Sorry but they handed it away because of their greed and backstabbing

Everyone thinks because Nintendo makes curtsy games that THEY are innocent, they are just as greed backstabbing cooperate BS as anyone else, or they wouldn’t be successful today. It was their greed and backstabbing that even brought the Playstaion to market. The history is below and you can read it anywhere. “Nintendo approached Sony to develop a CD-ROM add-on, tentatively titled the "SNES-CD". A contract was signed, and work began. Nintendo's choice of Sony was due to a prior dealing: Ken Kutaragi, the person who would later be dubbed "The Father of PlayStation", was the individual who had sold Nintendo on using the Sony SPC-700 processor for use as the eight-channel ADPCM sound synthesis set in the Super Famicom/SNES console through an impressive

Yamauchi decided that the contract was totally unacceptable and he secretly canceled all plans for the joint Nintendo-Sony SNES CD attachment. Instead of announcing a partnership between Sony and Nintendo, at 9 a.m. the day of the CES, Nintendo chairman Howard Lincoln stepped onto the stage and revealed that Nintendo was now allied with Philips, and Nintendo was planning on abandoning all the previous work Nintendo and Sony had accomplished. After the collapse of the joint project, Sony considered halting their research, but ultimately the company decided to use what they had developed so far and make it into a complete, stand alone console. As a result, Nintendo filed a lawsuit claiming breach of contract and attempted, in U.S. federal court, to obtain an injunction against the release of the PlayStation, on the grounds that Nintendo owned the name. The federal judge presiding over the case denied the injunction and, in October 1991, the first incarnation of the new Sony PlayStation was revealed.”

I am not saying this particular patent is copying Nintendo as this may be for a phone trying to compete with iPhone instead. However, to all those who say Sony is innocent of copying from Nintendo, look at the facts. Back when the original Playstation released it did not even have analog sticks, just a four direction pad. A lot of people don't know that or choose not to remember it. Then the N64 released with Super Mario 64 and revolutionized 3-D. Suddenly Sony was scrambling to get its own analog sticks. Then a year later Nintendo released vibration. Sony actually filed a patent for this first, but decided consumers would not care about it, and they were too busy catching up to the curve on the analog sticks. Everyone loved rumble, so voila, magically Sony released rumble in its controllers less than a year later. The original PS3 was not supposed to have any Sixaxis control, but when Nintendo announced its secret weapon a couple years ago at E3, Sony postponed the release of the PS3 to tack on motion controls. At first I thought Nintendo's decision to release the motion control idea to the public early was a bad idea, as the PS3 was able to copy it, but now I see it was genius. Nitnendo made Sony second guess themselves, tack on an underdeveloped technology, release their product late, and overall look foolish. I have not even heard the word Sixaxis uttered in the last six months, and I read a lot of gaming magazines and sites. What it comes down to is Sony is a greedy and arrogant company, and I think they are getting what they deserve. It took Nintendo over a decade to get their revenge at having the video game industry stolen from them, but they got it. And to those of you who say Sony has their best interests at heart, then how do you explain the PSP Lite? They release it just a couple years after the original, with much better features and a better cost. That is kind of spitting in the face of those who bought the original. I think anyone who buys an original Playstation product is short sighted, as all you have to do is wait for the inevitable Slim version to be released, which will have better features. I am expecting the Slim of the PS3 in 2009 or 2010, and it will probably have BC and a larger hard drive than all the versions out now (and by then it will have more than five games worth owning on it).

I think This would be killer for RTS games. and browsing the web on the PS3. Thats about it. Also i think what we are learning with nintendo is when you chage the way things are done even though all these systems are being sold if the third party developers dont jump on board. You just bought a $250 rock, enjoy.
