Unreal Engine 3 powering mystery Capcom project

Japanese publisher will use Epic Games' popular technology for an as-yet-unannounced game being developed in Europe.

Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 has been used in a wide variety of games, including some very unexpected ones. Although most people know that it powered popular third-person shooter Gears of War, not many are aware that it was also behind the lush graphics in the role-playing game Lost Odyssey.

Now Capcom has announced that it has agreed to use the technology in another, as-yet-unspecified game. All the publisher will reveal is that the still-unnamed game is currently being developed in Europe. According to a statement, Unreal Engine 3 has been chosen because it "fully meets the requirements particular to this project." It also added that the team working on the project had "thorough knowledge" of the engine.

Capcom tends to favor its internally developed MT Framework to power its current-generation games. The engine was used in recent PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games including Devil May Cry 4, Dead Rising, and Lost Planet. The company has licensed the Unreal Engine 3 once before, for upcoming sci-fi action game Dark Void, which is being developed by Airtight Games in the US.

At the end of May, Epic Games also let it be known that Sega had extended its Unreal Engine 3 licensing deal to include an "unannounced, cross-platform game." Earlier this month, Seoul-based T-Entertainment also bought a licence for an upcoming global massively multiplayer online role-playing game for the PC code-named L2.

I wish they would make MONSTER HUNTER 3 for PS3 like they were going to do! The unreal engine might just be the key- it is cheaper to develop for because all the resources are there. they put it on wii because of low dev costs but i want that game to exist on ps3 so badly. it would become as big as final fantasy 7 was on playstation, without a doubt.

excuse me, SalarianChemist? I whole-heartedly agree with mikequiggs in that you are wrong on both accounts (but at the same time dude, the article states that the project SEGA is working on will be multi-plat). My money's on mega man legends 3... Capcom producer keiji inafune expressed his interest in creating a next-gen MML with unreal in mind.

    Posted Jun 27, 2008 9:32 am PT

First of all the article clearly states that this will be a cross-platform game and second of all, the bugs for unreal engine 3 were worked out for the PS3 when unreal tournament 3 came out.

Word on the street is that it will be exclusive to the Xbox 360, because the Unreal Graphics Engine runs so much better on the Xbox 360, just like every other graphics engine.

Resident Evil 5 is also supposed to be an exclusive for the Xbox 360 for at least a certain amount of time.

There are a whole host of issues with licensing the MGS4 engine. Most of that stems from the fact that the engine wasn't built specifically to be licensed out. It probably doesn't have specific, easy to use interfaces and substantial documentation and support. The reason UE3 is so popular is because Epic provides incredible support and documentation, including up-to-the-hour (or day) access to their most recent source code. It's not really easy to put together all the support infrastructure needed to license an engine. As a side note, UE3 will never come to the Wii. It's a technical impossibility. Epic might design an engine specifically for the Wii using an older version of the Unreal Engine, but it will not be any form of UE3. I doubt they would divert resources for that project, seeing as how Epic is always trying to push the leading edge of graphical capabilities with their engines. It just wouldn't make sense to go backward (as far as cost/benefit).

    Posted Jun 26, 2008 1:00 am PT

Hm... I hope its a good game. Also alot of devs are using UE 3, not that I have anything against the engine, its just that almost all the games look similar. Why not buy the engine used in MGS 4?

The Havok engine only deals with managing and calculating physics, not graphics.

I would like to see Megaman Legends 3, they need to finish that series...but that is very unlikely since its europe. The first two were the only real Megaman 3D games ever released and part 2 ended with more to cover. I would like to see the series redone or at least re-released in a Megaman Collectors edition for systems. Its probably going to be Lost Planet 2.

  • GodsPoison

    Posted Jun 25, 2008 11:13 pm PT

So we can narrow the list down to what? lets see: Dead Rising 2, definite possibility, Lost Planet 2, alos a possibility but less likely, a new Onimusha could be a possibility,It also might be a DMC spin off or it could be a megaman game.....or it could be some random new franchise that weve never even heard of. My bets are on Dead rising 2, but my hopes lie with Lost planet 2.(and yes i know Colonies just came out but its still a possibilty.)

Havok helped dead rising with holding so many characters on screen, @Petri87 - it more so depends on the game, dead rising used the engine to carry all the zombies on screen so steadily, lots o' zombies .

@KidKorea - Retarded, great choice of words.

  • Petri87

    Posted Jun 25, 2008 9:24 pm PT

@KidKorea - Then what are you? Havok is a physics engine not a graphix engine.
