MGS4 ships a million in Europe

Solid Snake's swan song on the PS3 topped "relevant" Euro sales charts in its first week on the market.

Back in November 2007, Ryan Payton notably said that Hideo Kojima's latest epic creation, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, would need to sell 1 million copies on day one for Konami to recoup the money spent on the game.

Last week, Konami appeared to make a sizable dent in that feat with its PlayStation 3-exclusive stealth action epic. The game shot to the top of the Japanese sales charts, selling more than 500,000 units in just three days.

Now, the figures from all of Europe are in, and the game has officially shipped more than a million copies in the region, according to Konami. As for sales, Konami also notes that the game has landed "the number-one position in the relevant sales charts [for Europe]." Konami didn't specify individual regions, but MGS4 scored the top slot in the UK during its debut week, according to Chart-Track.

Konami also said that all 25,000 units of the limited-edition Metal Gear Solid 4 set sold out "almost immediately" in Europe. The sets included a "making-of" Blu-ray Disc, a soundtrack CD, and an "Old Snake" mannequin.

    Also, who thinks Raiden should get his own game? He is second to Snake, a great honourable character, who would offer so many combat skills, aswell as his own story.

    Guys im on my third runthrough now, cant get enough of MGS4, a true masterpeice. Does anyone know how to control the sorrow and mantis dolls properly? Sorry if this is a spoiler. Oh and that triangle bashing bit, ripped emotions out of me, seeing all those poeple depending of snake getting through, no game has that psychological effect like MGS4, amazing.

    They should have made 50,000 special editions, would have made more money and sold them all. I missed out on one

    I can't see this getting GOTY though. Too many 360 owners would vote for GTA IV (either because they liked it or just because its the only thing with a chance at beating MGS4) and then a few PS3 owners too. You can't beat multiplats, hence the whitewash of COD4 last year. We still have 6 months left though so who knows.

    cant remember the name of the mag I read (sorry), but on it said: "...360 strong in the U.S. but weakening everywhere else... MGS4 a great booster for PS3 outside the U.S., which is gradually cathing up to 360's head start". the mag. went on and called the game "ice breaker", becouse so many people were waiting for it to get their PS3. some are still waiting for God of War and Final Fantasy... I hope that says anything to you "hatieshorrer". maybe it didn't sell so well that side... I dunno.

    anyway, so Kojima San, can you hook us up with a sequel to Zone of The Enders, now that you're done with Metal Gear? that would be sweat!!
    I can only imagine 500 mosquitos on screen at the same time ready to get it...

    Hmm. The game was packed in with the latest rumble equiped 80gb PS3 model. You sure rumble, 80gb, and people who were holding out for the latest PS3 model (instead of buying the 40gb stripped down model that was previously available) didn't move systems? Noboby wanted to buy the 40gb POS PS3 w/ no backward compatibility, which was all that was available for months. Sony released an improved model with a MGS4 pack in and said the game sold the systems all by itself?

    It a tough decison for GOTY. I would like to see this game wins and basically it deserves it. I wonder if they will factor in the visual aspect of MGS4 over GTA4 or the fact the GTA4 is multi platform. It should be factor in.

    I dunno. GTA IV was a good game, but in terms of new stuff it brought to the table, it pales in comparrison to MGS4. And in terms of sheer glee it brings, its MGS4. GTA is great, but does it allow you to twist a guys junk til he passes out?

    The year ain't over yet, but its hard to imagine anything opping MGS4 as game of the year. And that includes Schafers new thing, if he ever does any work on it.

    They've had two Games of the Year before- with 2000 and 2001. I think this year it will either be GTA4 AND MGS4, but if they decide to choose one between two excellent games, I have a feeling GTA will win. It's a tough decision, could go either way.

    like thier was and doubt that this wouln't sell millions in each area before said and done i would bet that EU will top at close to 2 million and Japan at 1 million and USA 1.5 million this year. With ease if they continue to ship 80 gig bundles.

    Some people here are saying MGS4=GOTY , well let me say that this is a huge possibility but the race is on between this game and GTA IV, both games have got the "mechanics" to become GOTY , they both deliver a stunning Gameplay experience and to me, i can only put it in this way: MGS4 & GTA IV are Game Of The Year.

    MGS4 IS AMAZING! I played MGS a little bit, but never played any others besides the first. I was never really into the "slowness" of the games, but I picked this up on day 1 and played through it the first time and I've never felt this way about a game before... If the hole in the center of the disc was large enough I would... well ya know hahahaha! jk Great game tho!

    must be a good game good for ps3 owners but its still not enough for me neither is it my type of game, need more than 1 good game to warrant a console purchase by me lol maybe ill get a ps3 when killzone2 etc comes out but for now ill stick wii60 lol ps3 fans you've waited long enough for an exclusive game worth bothering about enjoy it for I may join you in a few months then I dont miss out on any good games

    I don't see anyone downplaying Halo 3 sales. And why would they? Halo 3 sold great! You know, I went back and had a look at some old news articles involving the impressive Halo 3 sales. You would think that if anywhere, that would be where the Sony fanboys would be, trying to downplay Halo's success. Guess what? It doesn't appear that it happened. The Halo 3 news articles are filled with 360 fanboys all taking shots at the PS3. Sony fanboys weren't downplaying Halo's sales at all.

    Metal Gear Solid 4 is arguably the best game ever created, and that is coming from a person who previsouly held that title for Final Fantasy VII. I bought the MGS4 PS3 bundle along with GTA4 at launch and i'm just now starting to play GTA4 now. I'm sorry to all the GTA fans(me included!) but there is simply no comparison between the two. I'll never look at games the same again. Thank you Kojima San!!!

    You know, I'd be inclined to agree with you if it weren't for the hardware problems I've experienced with my 360 and MS's subscription fees they insist we pay for the "privilege" of playing online. Oh, and Blu-Ray/Divx playback. And I like the DualShock controller. And the PS3 is quieter. And the wi-fi is nice so I don't need to run another cable over there. You know what, I take that back. I don't agree at all.

    That was to be expected. Halo 3 sales in the US dropped 80% from week one to week 2, and another 50% from week 2 to week 3, then another 50% for week 4.
    We'll have to wait for the numbers but MGS4 should be past 2 million worldwide at this point, after 1.4 million on it's first week. I think one million shipped to Europe should about cover them for the month of June. What they needed to do was get more of those MGS4 bundles! Those things sold out everywhere.

    Good news, amazing how 360 fanboys still try to downplay it, for all those people that say SHIPPED NOT SOLD, when companies ship something the stores who ordered those products are expecting people to buy that specific product, so 1 million shipped mean one million will be sold by the end of the summer if not sooner, and Moon Microsoft does not have that much of a lead on Sony in how many units sold so it is possible for MGS4 so sell over 3 milion, and Sony has ALWAYS dominated Europe, UK included. Microsoft only has a market in the United States, Sony has dominated Japan and Europe which is why they do not care much for NA because whatever they loose in NA they make up for it in Europe.

    i gotta admit. mgs4 is practically a flawless game. it makes getting a hdtv worth it. everything from the graphics to gameplay is perfect. that's good to hear that it's selling quickly cuz there's nothin worse than spendin a lot of money on somethin and not having a good return on it. i'm sure sony execs must be saying "finally". lol...

    U can't really compare pounds with us dollars man, cause if ur saying that, then u have to say for the price they pay for gas over there then we should be paying twice as much as over there, see wat am saying. After all each territory has different money value man. So in the end it will never equal out, just let it be. And no i don't know who has a higher install base in the uk or in any region infact, i just don't care, bring out the good games and people will buy them, no matter wat system they r for. This is like heavon and hell, lets say heavon made this killer game, but ur in hell and u want to play that game soo bad but if u break hells rules u get punished, will it be worth it. lol lol Its not heavon or hell its games just enjoy it man and stop jumping down each other's throats.

    MoonMarvel ........ no your wrong, the ps3 has a higher install base in uk than the 360, there was an article about it a few months back that the ps3 had passed it, and it also had hit the 1million mark, much quicker than what the ps2 did, the ps3 sells very well in the uk.... might be because britain gets screwed with live, its 50 pound here, which is 100 u.s dollas for a yrs xbox live, plus 60 pound.. 120 u.s dollas for the wireless add on, so after u pay for one yrs live and the wireless add on, its quite abit more than what the ps3 has, thus the ps3 has outsold the xbox much better here. probz not the case in the us as its only 50 dollas for live which only 25 pound so not as much as a rip off.

    it's good that the PS3 FINALLY has a AAA exclusive title ...
    for all the fanboy's talk of Resistance, motorstorm, Uncharted or Ratchet .. these are (mostly) just good games
    this actually make owning a PS3 tempting !!
