PES 2009 kicks off

Konami confirms that its celebrated football series will be getting another match on multiple platforms this autumn.

Perhaps it was as inevitable as the sun rising in the morning, but nonetheless it's now official. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is set to hit European stores this autumn on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 2, and PSP.

According to Konami, it is "already planning a raft of extensive new additions that will further bridge the gap between PES and the real thing." A new graphics update is promised, as well as new options that will let users tailor the gameplay to their personal tastes. There will also be new moves and new control elements, and online play will return.

PES 2008 suffered from a buggy online mode, and was criticised for not adding any new features over the previous year's game. However, PES project leader for Konami Jon Murphy commented that "PES 2009 looks set to reaffirm the series' utter superiority."

The Pro Evolution Soccer series started life as J-League Winning Eleven in 1995, and has spawned almost innumerable sequels since that time. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 will be the eighth game to bear the Pro Evo name in Europe, and the second in the series to be released stateside without the Winning Eleven moniker.

PES ISNOT A REAL FOOT BALL GAME .....I BELIVE THAT FIFA 08 OR 09 IS GREATER THAN ANY PES GAME AND IT IS THE TRUTH.

I’v been playing PES since ISSS '98, and for me has always been a million miles better than fifa....... only kids would disagree!! BUT PES2008 on the PS3 for me wasn’t great; I actually preferred it on the PS2... I loved the community menu, and the online gaming for the ps3 was CRAP!!

But I will again buy another PES this autumn, but if it is a poor game it will prob be my last PES!! Saying that I think it will be much improved...... but I really hope the following gets looked at:

    (i) They must licence more teams and leagues
(ii) Graphics MUST improve big time, and not just the players but the kits, stadiums and fans too
(iii) A brand new online gaming system, no glitches or lags!!
(iv) Just a complete fresh new menu presentation, all of the PES games look like crappy Japanese menus....... I know kanomi is just this, but seriously how cool does the fifa menu look!!
    (v) An option to play our won music in the menu screens, not just the GOD DAMN WORST MUSIC EVER INVENTED which has plagued us for years!!
(vi) A much better realistic master league, one where it feels like your half manager half player, where it uses real currency and statistics and things like this!!
(vii) Have both the online lobby to keep records but bring in the PS2 offline community mode so you can play your mates at home and it keeps all the records!!
(viii) Proper pace and physics to the game, I really think the likes of Messi and kaka should be able to outrun the likes of sol Campbell and Per Metersacker unlike in PES2008, where no forward could outrun the slowest of defenders!! WTF like??

I think that’s all really, there's one or two small details which should be looked at but this above ideas for me are the BIG problems which need to be sorted for PES2009!!

For PC gamers, I think PES is still lot better than FIFA. But now, for 2009 release, they brag on getting better. Let's see who's got the statement right.
Anyway, I still believe in PES. But... yeah let's wait...

Dear ParappaDeAmigo, you are speaking of probably the best soccer game I have ever played! International Superstar Soccer 64 has unbeatable good controls, wonderful visuals (within the limits of the N64 of course). I would have blended in the excellent AI of International Superstar Soccer Pro evolution 2 (PSX) with some few more tweaks to make it THE soccer game experience. It went close. Everything that came after was not on the same level.

    where's the Wii version???

speaking of which, I'd love for International Superstar Soccer 64 to be given the Virtual Console treatment - Make it happen Konami!!

I was a Pro Evolution Soccer fan up until last years addition. I had never played a FIFA game since the first launch of Pro Evolution Soccer (PS2), in 2001.

A few weeks before Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 came out I bought FIFA 08. I played only about 30 minutes of the game and thought: "Dam, this is rubbish!" So there it was left, untouched, until I played PES 2008.

When I played PES 2008 it seemed the same old same old, so I went and gave FIFA 08 another chance... And I got addicted to the game. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 really let me down and because of that I am now a FIFA fan.

I will be renting PES 2009 and buying FIFA 09, Konami has to do something special this year to get me back.

DannyBoyVai I 100% agree with you. That is why I never played FIFA. I'd press a button, and a few seconds later something finally happens...in the mean time i'd have pressed the button 5 more times because i didn't see an action as a result. Stupid FIFA. Haven't played pro evo though, i'll have to pick up a copy.

  • DannyBoyVai

Fifa was great until last gen and it took em till 2003 to find their feet. They instantly lost em with 2004 and have been crap since. Fifa gameplay consists of pressing a button and watching a 3 second animation happen before the button press actually makes happen what you wanted to happen in the first place. PES is slightly arcadey in that sense and when you press a button you feel something happen straight away. Couple with that that you can edit to your hearts content any names, likenessess and strips and you are sorted with it. I actually think PES has more longevity in that way too. You don't have to worry about transfers and strip changes, you can just go and edit them to suit the new thing in real life. GO PRO EVO. Here's hoping this is better than the patchy but still addictive last game.

meh, fifa is better generally, but pro evo has pro evo gameplay,if you loved pro evo you will continue lovin'it..like me...fifa is better, but i still rather play pro evo,and fifa 08 for pc was.:::...zomg horrible....

  • kono11

    Posted Jun 23, 2008 3:43 pm GMT

Hmm, pro evo is good in gameplay, but the thing what do they have to bring is:
-Licensing for teams, and very good kits. -FIFA has it.
-More licensed music tracks - FIFA has it!
and more weaknesses on PES 2008.

And FIFA is also good, but they have to emphasize their gameplay.

Well i have been a fan of pro evo for years but last year fifa 08 was the better football game.

Pro evo needs allot of work to bring it into the next generation, pro still used canned animations, they need to have a live ball like fifa 08 did, with pro evos gameplay it could easily be the best football game on the market again like it has been for years, they also really need to make a new next generation engine, this is why fifa has overtaken them imo, fifa's physics/animations on both the ball and player are head and shoulders above pro evo those additions made fifa 08 an unpridictable game of football that was exciting while in pro evo i could tell as soon as someone took a shot where it was going because of the animation.

IMO konami have yet to make a real next gen pro evo so hopefully 09 has stepped it up several notches.

PES 2008 was actually revolutionary: faster pace, closer control, improved animations that actually influence gameplay, bigger pitch, revamped shooting system. I won't say PES2008 was perfect, cause it isn't, bu t is not as dismal as some site's reviews would have you thinking.

Noobs and casual gamers won't appreciate or even notice changes, but veteran and pro players definitevely noticed and adapted. The thing is, to play casually FIFA is nice, PES actually requires skill. I am quite a pro in Winning, and super pro in FIFA whenever I get to pick up a controller, ProEvo just offers so much more depth in terms of gameplay, is not even worth comparing.

Of course, it's just a game, no need to insult or get mad about it, if you like FIFA then by all means have fun, although you should try to immerse yourself in Pro-Evo, it's better if a good player takes you through your first games. Like a friend said "Once you go pro, you never go back!"

not that graphics are the issue here, but would be good one day if football games actually looked realistic. they always look so dated to me. still i'm well overdue a footie game and PES is always the best for me!

Why not just buy FIFA and PES instead of having to miss out on one of the two best football games available? That's what I've done for the past 10 years and that way you get the best of both worlds

Konami you suck. No , really, you do big tiime.
I just cannot believe this people. I have been playing PES (or WE, Or International Superstar soccer as it was called back in the day) since the super Nintendo, for me it was just unthinkable to play a Fifa game , but after years of this people rearshing the same game for 20 times and Fifa really trying to improve i find myself going back to football gamees with UEFA2008 wich is a truly great game.

Konami you suck, you will exploit a franchise for years withouth ever trying to do something with it...look at PES, look at DDR you people disgust me and you should thank Hideo Kojima for being the genius that he is and bringing yur name to a truly amazing product...i guess he doesn't listen to what you people say..YOU SUCK KONAMI
