MGS4 boosts PS3 sales in Japan

Guns of the Patriots shoots to the number one spot in the Land of the Rising Sun, shifts just under 500,000 in its first week on sale.

It wasn't quite a million sold on day one, but Konami must still be quite pleased with last week's sales figures in Japan for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

After going on sale in the country on June 12, the game debuted at the top of the software charts for the week of June 9-15. So far, 464,926 copies of MGS4 have been sold, which means that it's almost halfway to Konami's milestone.

Hideo Kojima's PlayStation 3 exclusive also boosted sales of the console itself. They were up from 10,856 the week before by almost seven times to 75,311.

Two special editions of Guns of the Patriots were released in Japan: the MGS4 Premium Pack, and the PS3 MGS4 Welcome Box. The Premium Pack includes the "very" limited-edition gunmetal PS3 along with the game, and retails at ¥51,800 ($481). The PS3 MGS4 Welcome Box is simply the game plus a Dual Shock controller in ceramic white, black, or satin silver and retails at ¥63,800 ($593).

The second-best-selling console of the week ending June 15 was the PlayStation Portable, still buoyed by Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G sales (released on March 27, and currently number five in the chart), which clocked in 64,675 units. The Wii was next with 45,564, followed by the DS Lite with 39,201, the PlayStation 2 with 7,297, and the Xbox 360 with 2,163.

    First, YOU brought up RROD death. Second, MS doesn't fix them in Canada, they replace them with refurbed units. I know because I record the serial numbers of all my electronics and the s/n is different each time. And lastly, the new motherboards are better but still reportedly have a 15% failure rate. If you don't want to talk about RROD, don't bring it up.

    Who cares how much both sold. Did Halo 3 and GTAIV push hardware sales up like MGS4 did? Nope. 360's failure rate is 33% while PS3's is 0.02%, get your facts right and stop using wikipedia as proof since ANYONE can edit the articles.

    Why are even here in the first place? You don't like PS3 or MGS4. You always insult PS3 every minute of the day, say Halo 3 and GOW have the best graphics and gave THIS game a 1. Crawl back to your XboxNation union and leave MGS4 and PS3 owners alone.

    This is the Tomb Stone of the X360. MS has more units and STILL couldn't get this game or an equal.

    Your sad, keep bringing up RROD when it is not a big deal and you cant go thourgh 4 consoles, you send your 360 in for them to fix it. It is going to go down when the new motherboards are tested probably to 3% or less.

    That 1.5 million figures was as of the week ending June 14, so after 2 days on the market. Sales data isn't in for last week's sales. As for the 360's failure rate, representatives from EBgames, Gamestop and BestBuy, the largest 360 retailers in the world were the ones that reported the 30-33% failure rate (wikipedia has quite a write up about the 360's problems). An EA rep said that 50% of their launch consoles had failed before he was quietly hushed up and EA and MS both went into damage control mode. Think about this. If 30% of 360's are actually faulty, that's 6 million units, more than the 360's lead globally. Even if you're 10% failure rate was true, 1 in 10 is still high. I wouldn't knowingly buy a product that had a 1 in 10 chance of being defective, I don't care how good the warranty was. Not with similarly priced systems with less than a one percent hardware failure rate. Had I known this I would have never, never bought a 360 console at launch like I did. After 4 refurbed consoles, if this one goes outside the warranty which is almost up, I won't be replacing it.
    I don't mean to beat a dead horse here, but if you bring up RROD and try to shrug it off like nothing, don't be surprised if people who had to suffer through this might try to set you straight on the matter.

    yeah it didnt do as good as a game like gta4- but when you consider that they had NO WHERE NEAR the amount of advertisement and publicity that gta4 and its series has had, its really quite impressive sales numbers

    Well MGS isn't selling as fast as GTA was but that's because it isn't a mutiplaform game... at least the PS3 got a number 10 rated game to themselves.

    Console War comment or not, I can't believe how stubborn the Japanese are in still purchasing PS3's over the 360. I've had both for quite some time and Metal Gear is the only game I've found that actually convinced me to spend money on it ( though I would really like a copy of Eye of Judgement, just have too many good 360 games coming ). Their loyalty is beginning to smack of pride. The sinful kind, not the admirable kind.

    Yes, thank you for that economics lesson. Did you miss mine? I said that Forza sold because there was a market for it on the 360. Did that confuse you?

    I'm not saying that Forza is bad.. why u're so defendness? and i'm not the fanboy on both console.but i'm interested in the console and fanboy phenomenal.. i just curious why the exclusive games on PS3 can attract a lot of people like GT, Top GEAR alwasy make review of it.. Car manufactures has important relations to it..? and when it come out, it's like the mars has come near to earth... news on TV, racing channel,newspaper makes a lot of comments and articles about it..

    but how about forza? people always said it does has crash, simulation is real to GT....but when few months passed, nobody mention about the game..(but i can't denied that gear of war is good also and it does attract a lot of people. about halo.. it's like a huge thunderstorm, come quikly, went off quickly) when PS3 exclusive like MGS4, FFXIII come out, fanboys yell and shout loudly, make rumors loud that the game will port to 360 and kojima-san explain again and again MGS4 it's still PS3 exclusive title. why? GT, FF, and MGS on PS3 series are totally different.. it just ike diablo and warcraft,starcraft series on PC.. a lot of people around the world still talking about the strategies although few years passed..so I do hope if 360 can comes with these few titles if it wants to appear as people-concerned-console first instead of winning the console war in next few years..

    can you see the differences?

    p.s good news(maybe rumors) for GT gamers, GT5 will postpone until late 2008 because will include car damages..soon a patch will come out for Prologue to be downloaded.. i don't know it's fact or rumor..obviously you'll not see this news in game spot(u guess it) but u can google it to see the GT news.

    Most fanboys ignore the flaws and say it was perfect and the best gmae ever.If Forza was so bad why was there a second and soon to be coming out a third. GT might look good but it is hardly the best, you cant even damage your car which is unrealistic.

    Reality is hard to swallow sometimes. You just have to DO it. PS3 sales have been better every week for the last 6-7 months, outselling the 360 week in and week out. Suck it up for once.
    Here's an idea since your 36 (btw I'm 30) and you mentionned that you have owned every single box since your a baby....Why don't you BUY a PS3 and play Metal Gear Solid 4. I'm sure you can afford it.

    great game if god of war 3 comes out this year i would be a happy gamer but its not and 360 is running out of steam hahahaha all we need is bioshock o wait we got it how bout gow and fable 2

    The PS3 will eventually catch the 360, as the PS3 will go on for 10 years, so it's inevitable. I think everyone can agree on this for the most part. I still don't think it'll catch the 360 until after next years holidays though. After that M$ will launch a new game console and the whole thing will start all over again. To me, it's not a big deal. Sony will still lose the war in the end, as the Wii continues to outsell it month after month. It's all about the games anyways.

    @ combatsoldier. You know, I'd probably still be playing my 360 a lot if it hadn't been for hardware issues I've had. That changes up your gaming habits in a hurry when you can't play the bulk of your game library for 2 months while waiting for repairs, and then you have to fight for hours to get them to give you your money back when they extend the warranty.

    I use to play my 360 a lot more then my ps3 and now i find myself just playing ps3 wife my wife and kids. Metal gear is great. Im sure ill play 360 again when gears of war 2 come out. But am now primarily playing ps3. No there is no fanboyism here.

    I'm with you on that one. All I could do was shake my head while that was going on. My PS3 sat pracatically unused for 6 months after I finished RFOM after launch, exactly as my 360 did. I couldn't fathom how they thought something so expensive would storm the gates and unseat the market leader so soon with what was a pretty weak lauch slate of games. Madness. I predicted initially that it would sell worse than the 360 and I was surprised that it managed to keep up.
    And you're right again, yes the PS3 may catch up next year if the current trends continue, but the odds of the current trends continuing exactly is they are are pretty slim. Price cuts and big releases on both sides are likely to skew these numbers when they hit.

    That's funny...everyone, and I mean everyone, predicted prior to the PS3 launch it would destroy the 360 within the first year. On top of that even Sony admits the PS3 has not performed to expectations.

    As for giving the PS3 another 18+ months to catch up to the 360 if nothing else were to change based off this point in time; that's fine and dandy...it will never turn out that way but predict away.

    Did you look at the same chart as I did? When you plot the trendline the PS3 looks like it will hit the 21 million mark just shortly after the 360 does, at approx the end of the year, early next. If, and that's a big if, the trend continues the PS3 should overtake the 360 in summer/fall of next year.
    Also, I've never noticed a 2 year game cycle before. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out when it's over. Last year I would have never predicited the PS3 to have moved 13.5 million consoles at this point. Maybe I would have predicted 10 million like the 360 hit around this point in it's life, but I didn't think the PS3 would take off like it has. I also would never have thought the Wii to show this kind of staying power.

    Furthermore based off the historic 2-year cycle for console games the 360 is coming though it's odd-number dry spell where as the PS3 is 1/2 way though it's even year upswing.

    I don't think you actually read either post. The 360 is currently in 3rd place as far as weekly sales go worldwide and has been since October. That is not in dispute. I'm not saying that the PS3 isn't currently in 3rd place overall, because we all know that it is. It still lags the 360 by 5.5 million consoles worldwide, which is a little less than what it sold during it's first year.
    @ Yuck_too. As for the PS2/PS3/360 sales comparison, just have a look at vgchartz under chartz and Hardware from Launch and you'll see how the 3 systems stack up. The 360 was keeping pace with the PS2 but has now fallen off over the last year while the PS3 has keep pace so far. Will it continue, we'll have to wait and see. We know that vgchartz adjusts it's data when offical numbers come out so we can be reasonably confident with the accuracy of this data and the trend is very clear.

    Yes...I agree with Yuck_Too. To assume that the 360 will slide to the 3rd position is erroneous. That sort of presumptuous speculation is ridiculous. Sales for the 360 still very strong and consistent and until a force collides with a moving object as to impede its progress this will continue...and from what I have seen so far that object will NOT be the PS3.

    True, same thing happen when Halo 3 was released. Same thing will happen when FF XIII and Gears of War 2 gets released. I think the fact that MGS4 was a bundle helped the PS3 sell as many as they did. M$ needs to do this with all their exclusives to help push their hardware sales. MGS was never my cup of tea, but I'm willing to give it another shot. There are at least 4-5 must have games on the PS3, so now isn't a bad time to pick one up. Sony still needs to get more great titles out for their system. I'm glad they are finally going to concentrate on making games. M$ has been doing this since day one of launch, which is why they have at least 20-25 must have titles on their system.
