NWN2 rides Storm of Zehir

Atari and Obsidian Entertainment's D&D-inspired RPG expands for another time on PC with new 15-hour campaign.

Earlier this month, Wizards of the Coast rolled out the 4th Edition rule set to its venerable Dungeons & Dragons pen-and-paper role-playing game. But even with the new 4.0 rules now in play, the 3.5 rule set isn't yet ready for retirement. An Obsidian Entertainment representative confirmed for GameSpot today that its acclaimed Neverwinter Nights 2 PC RPG--based on the older rule set--will expand for a second time with Storm of Zehir.

Details on the second NWN2 expansion have yet to be confirmed in an official capacity, but posts by developers on the Storm of Zehir forums do offer a few details on what gamers can expect. Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir will add approximately 15 hours of gameplay, and the game will pull the shape-shifting serpent Yuan-Ti from the Forgotten Realms fantasy universe as the primary antagonists.

Developers also note that Storm of Zehir gameplay will be reminiscent of both the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale RPGs. In addition to the new storyline, the game will reportedly feature a variety of new classes, spells, monsters, and playable races, and Obsidian also promises improvements to the multiplayer component for both players and modders.

Published by Atari, Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir for the PC has not yet been dated.

I hope they add in the beholder this time. I know there are community made beholders, but seriously OE, a D&D title with no beholder? What gives?

Anyways, looking forward to throwing more cash into this franchise. With all of the great community made modules available, NWN2 is quite the bargain.

NWN2 is getting to be quite the purchase: The official campaign, the brilliant Mask of the Betrayer expansion, Mysteries of Westgate adventure pack, Planescape: Purgatorio and now this, another expansion. After a rocky start, Obsidian is more than making up for it. Can't wait for this.

Long live "bird's eye view", story driven games with actual role-playing and depth!

@magusat999 Stick with cookie cutter JRPG. Basically what you're saying is, don't make it a D&D game. If you don't like dice rolls, don't play D&D.

I really wish that Bioware hadn't let Obsidian get their mits on this game. They just don't put the polish on their games that they should. Bugs galore, missing plot lines and content, they just don't seem to care as much. And NWN2 was a resource hog for no real good reason.

Hmm....I wonder if they'll finally get the camera control right. Lead the avatar's movement with the camera, don't lead the camera's movement with the avatar. WoW does it right, and NWN2 is still borderline unplayable. You would think a development house with years of experience would be smarter. Oh well, Obsidian also botched KOTOR2's ending, so I don't have much faith in them.

Obsidian should complete the main game first and then think of add-ons.

The NWN series is a lot a fun, a must play, but I just can't figure out why they use the D&D ruleset so extensively as to include it in areas like the stats in the game. Of all the people who play NWN, only the extreme, and extremely old nerds probably have any idea about what that cryptic junk means. sure you get a simple synopsis with the software - but why don't you just use the ruleset when coding the game, and give us a more friendly interface?

I really don't need to see and decipher 1d6-8... I'm not using dice and when I'm playing a game I don't feel like doing math. Here is where games like NWN need to look at games like Final Fantasy or Titan's Quest and provide us with something informational, yet easy to identify with. The dice roll is for the board game, and has no place or need in a graphical game. There are so many other ways to show the qualities of things with an open canvas - why be stuck with dice rolls?

"I wonder if this means NWN2 will go the route of NWN with a gold edition, then platinum, then diamond..."

It already has... I've seen some "ultimate" NWN pack that had all NWN stuff plus NWN2 (no expansion).

Then I saw some NWN2 pack (they're running out of names to use) which had NWN2 plus Betrayer expansion. It is almost certain that there will be another pack that includes the 3rd expansion, and maybe one that will include everything from NWN + NWN2 up till this point.

NWN1 went from gold, to platinum, to diamond, and it didn't end there. The diamond had 2 expansions, then they added some other pack which had Diamond plus Kingmaker which is just a mod pack.

    Bioware/Obsidian are milkers.
