Capcom pondering new film projects

President and COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto is currently in talks with Hollywood studios about bringing more of its games to the silver screen.

The Resident Evil and Street Fighter series have both already been made into movies, but Capcom wants to see more of its game properties coming to Hollywood.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Capcom president and chief operating officer Haruhiro Tsujimoto confirmed that the company was in talks to adapt other game properties into celluloid, but he refused to name them. He said, "We are in the process of working out contracts for several offers we received at the Cannes Film Festival last week and hope to make an announcement soon. If realized, the projects will have a big impact on the game and movie industries."

Tsujimoto added that, "We want to do with games what Marvel did with comics," referencing the success of the numerous Spider-Man and X-Men film adaptations.

Three previous movies have already been based on Capcom's zombie-killing survival horror franchise Resident Evil (known as Biohazard in Japan). A second Street Fighter-inspired film, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is currently in development, slated for release in early 2009.

Other Capcom properties that could become movies include the successful Devil May Cry series, Breath of Fire, Lost Planet, Bionic Commando, Viewtiful Joe, Mega Man, and Phoenix Wright.

I wouldn't mind DMC coming to theaters. And I know my best friend would love to see Lost Planet and Bionic Commando as movies. It's a good idea if they don't mess with the storyline drastically like they did with the RE series.

Megaman could make a cool movie if they do the whole Speed Racer thing with it. DMC would be awesome, but also very easy to screw up.

Just dont let Uwe Boll touch anything and there may be hope. Also, Dead Rising was based off of a movie already.

They should make a movie based on Dead Rising. You know, a bunch of people trapped in a mall, lots of zombies. Good Idea.

I preferred the second Resident Evil movie because it was the closest to the game story. What I find funny is that Capcom hired George Romero to write and direct the original RE movie but then the studio said his script was too gory and dark. This was George Romero, the guy who started the whole zombie craze in the 70' and 80's. He even directed a Japan commercial for Resident Evil 2 (you can find it on Youtube).
I read the original script he wrote and aside from Chris and Jill having a relationship in the beginning, the script was freaking awesome.
As for the second Street Fighter movie, well, I still shudder at the Jean Claude Van Dam version.

The Resident Evil movies had their good moments, but IMO they were not worth watching. This is pretty much the feeling you get when you watch most video-game to movie adoptions.

If they are going to do this, they better invest some time and money in assuring that they come out good like the Spider-man and X-men movies. Otherwise, you end up with mediocre movies that just make it harder to sell movies about your other properties.

Dino Crisis looked interesting for an old game, but they killed it with the Xbox release of Dino Crisis 3, which isn't compatible to the Xbox 360.

I liked the first Res. Evil movie & the third one, but the second one was a dud that can be skipped. I'm non-plussed about other videogames being turned into movies.

This is very interesting news. If done right, some of these films could be great.

If the new Street Fighter film employs much better dialogue and more intense fight choreography, it will be awesome.

In addition, I've been waiting for a live-action Mega Man film for over a decade. Decent dialogue, intense action sequences and brilliant special effects will make it a blockbuster.

Capcom will have to take Marvel's stance on making movies: If you want it done right, you gotta do it yourself. Make your own movie, then find someone to distribute.

deathscythe999, there is drama in Mega Man. You have Dr. Light who is put in the same spot as Alfred Nobel. In addition, the robot masters can think and exhibit emotions. The emotions are to help with human interaction.

So for a Mega Man movie, the movie will be sharing the spotlight between Dr. Light and Rock until Rock is modified to battle Dr. Wily after he hacks into Dr. Light's robot masters and uses then to begin conquering the world. The movie will have more drama than Superman at least, because Mega Man would enter the scene to save humans from the smaller robots causing havoc under the command of their robot master, and then after the humans have escaped the area, Mega Man will trash the robot masters and continue to Dr. Wily's base.

Overall, the idea of converting a game into a movie works for the classic Mega Man series. The classic Mega Man series has a background story beyond the game that you play. The movies are about the drama and action between the scenes, between the times where Mega Man goes out and saves the day. The background story is only read in a short 4 paragraphs in the game manual.

The first thing that needs to be realised is that whatever movie they make they won't make it rated 'R' (I'm very willing to place a bet on that) so that means NO BLOOD (other than a bleeding lip or small scratches...no blood on weapons).

So imagine a DMC without blood. What would be the point? Breath of Fire? That would appeal to the general public as much as Dungeon SIege did...Viewtiful Joe is more or less a "cult classic" kinda thing, people either love it like fanboys or they just don't, it has no inbetween area.

And if you think Mega Man has a shot....get serious. Robots fighting robots....where's the "human drama" aspect to appeal to Hollywood? And as mentioned somewhere below, Phoenix Wright would make a GREAT series on TV....but a movie just seems wrong to me.

So this leaves Lost Planet. With REAL people fighting huge alien creatures...made with CG...they can dumb down the violence and cut down on ALOT of the blood....kinda like Starship Troopers on ice....but not figure skating. That seems like the most plausible game to hit cinema IMO.

I hate movies in general. They are worse when you try to force a plot based on a game. Resident Evil was so terrible. I can write a generic script for any game based movie:
sexy female lead: "I'm caught up in this crazy" *game premise*
buff male lead: "Don't worry, i will protect you from the" *main villain*
explosions / gun fire / chase scene
female: "You made me safe. I love you." male: "Let us be together forever more." *smooch*

    @ David_Kniffin

Chris Gans is set to direct Onimusha; he even got the original actor who they modeled Samanosuke after to play the lead in the film. With that said the film has been delayed for whatever reasons, but I'm sure Gans can deliver on this film they way he did with Silent Hill, which was a far better game to film adaptation than most others.

@cooldude. dawn of the dead is not dead rising. it was a remake of the old 7's dawn of the dead. there was even a lawsuit brought on from the owner of dawn of the dead that stated dead rising was a rip from the movie. just because both had zombies in a mall doesn't mean they are from the same universe

  • David_Kniffin

    Posted May 25, 2008 5:14 am PT

just so you know Ozzza, the RE CG movie has been announced for a while now. and a DMC movie would be awesome, i hope they start with a movie based on game 3, not just cuz story but because Dante's personality in that game would attract more people, cuz he's funnier and reckless

  • galduke

    Posted May 24, 2008 3:30 pm PT

No, it can be based on the most simplistic arcade game and the movie will STILL water down the plot and make the character even MORE 2D. CG movies will at least look less cheesy, though.

Devil May Cry feels very film like already. Lost Planet would make an awesome movie. I think Capcom's best video game to movie was Dead Rising. I still don't understand why they changed the name to Dawn of the Dead either way it was the greatest game to film yet.

The producer of RE5, Jun Takeuchi, said just a couple of weeks ago that "We have plans for a Resident Evil CG movie to be released soon", so that might be one of the film projects they'll announce soon. CG probably meaning CGI, aka computer animated á la Toy Story, Final Fantasy and Beowulf.

Stick to games Capcom. That's what you do best.

If the Chun-Li film doesn't have a super hot babe with lots of sexual tension and kick ass action, I'll be disappointed.

Out of all of them, Devil May Cry is the best filmable franchise. They just have to have John Woo direct the film and it'll be pure gold.

You know what? I think they should focus on making GOOD movies first, and THEN worry about making MORE movies. I mean the Resisdent Evil movies are HORRIBLE and have absolutely NOTHING to do with the games except for zombies. As for Street Fighter...well, at least it was pretty funny. But seriously, the Resident Evil movies are awful, and have nothing to do with the games. I think they should decide to make GOOD movies first. THEN they can decide that they want to make more of their properties into movies.
