PSP goes blue for Madden

Limited-edition bundle from Sony and EA features latest gridiron sim, metallic blue portable, 1GB memory stick, and multimedia extras; available August 12 for $200.

In the past week, Nintendo has binged on new color reveals for its popular portable the Nintendo DS. On Friday, the hardware maker said that the limited-edition metallic-rose hue first seen as part of a Nintendogs bundle last year would become standard in the US, and earlier today, the publisher added red, turquoise, and green to the European DS palette.

Now, Sony is getting in the color-swap game. The hardware maker said today that it would be dressing up its PlayStation Portable in metallic blue as part of a limited-edition Madden NFL 09 bundle. The Madden NFL 09 PSP Entertainment Pack goes on sale alongside EA's latest annual football sim on August 12, and will retail for $199.99.

In addition to the blue PSP, a copy of Madden NFL 09 for the platform, and a 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo, Sony's latest PSP bundle packs in a pair of multimedia extras. Warner Bros. and NFL Films' NFL: In Just One Play will come on a UMD disc, and features interviews and footage from a number of pro athletes, including Chad Johnson, Randy Moss, and Reggie Wayne.

The bundle will also include a voucher to download Beats from the PlayStation Network through the portable's PC hookup. According to Sony, the software uses beat-tracking technology to create gameplay from any song that the player supplies.

EA Tiburon's Madden NFL '09 will also be available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Wii, and DS.

Wow......the PSP seems to be going the DS route with the colors. Makes me wonder, does anyone have every single color game boy pocket, game boy color, game boy advance, DS, or PSP color released to date?

This is awesome. I'm glad Sony is still doing what they can to keep the PSP a strong system in North America.

So where's the Indiana Jones orange-brown limited edition kit, with a bull-whip lanyard/wrist strap? Or maybe the Sex and the City pink version? I mean, they already re-released existing colors, but with the addition of a Star Wars logo(s)... Come On... Enough of the especial color limited edition packages! It's only time before the euro colors come to the US. When's the updated (hardware function wise) version due out?

I love that Sony's becoming more aggressive with the PSP now that the PS3's out. All flaws aside, it's a good little piece of hardware.

@ BooBakerBrown - Yeah, I see your point. Everyone has different tastes and what one person thinks is no big deal will leave someone else scratching their head wondering why someone would do that.

Hey, if anyone has the extra money and wants all the colors, more power to them!

And I totally get people wanting to express their individuality. I dunno... I just personally wouldn't have more than one of the same thing (that is that expensive) in more than one color at a time. That doesn't mean that people who do are wrong...

@ Nineball2112 Why not buy a system in your favorite color. Let's say you live in Oklahoma City & the closest NBA team is the Dallas Mavericks (not really sure if they are but just go along with me). The Seattle Supersonics owner has told the NBA he plans to move his franchise to Oklahoma City. If you live in OK City wouldn't you think you'd prefer to have OK City Sonics gear or Mavericks gear even though you already own Mavericks gear. Most everyone has thier favorite color & will usually try & buy things that fit thier personality. For me, I happen to love the color blue & if something that I enjoy comes along in blue I'll try & pick it up in that color if it's reasonable even though I have something in another color. The PSP came out 3 years ago so if one comes out that best represents my personality or allows me to express my individuality I'll buy it. Back 2+ years ago they came out with a $15,000 special Baby Phat/Phat Farm PSP decked out with diamonds. Or people will put different skins on there systems. Some people will go as far putting a custom paint job on them just to express they're individuality. I'm content with just buying it in my favorite color. There are @least 10/20+ variant colors & limited editions of the PSP in Japan. This would show people would prefer to have uniqueness or whatever fits thier personality like I said earlier. With this Madden bundle will make a 5th color variation (black, white silver, red, & blue)just here in the US not counting the special edition FFVII Crisis Core PSP available via online special order. When the PSP was first shown at the (I don't remember what year it was) E3 they had a black, white, & yellow one displayed instead of the routine black. There's nothing wrong with having a variety to choose from. I just wish they would have done it a lot earlier, but we all know that it was a marketing ploy to refresh the PSP to encourage and or potentially boost sales of Sony's handheld. As far as this being bundled with crap... a "bare bones" black PSP will cost you $170. The bundle, whether how good or crappy it is, comes with @tleast a newly released game, a 1gig memory card, umd dvd & another app. Cou could actually flip the game & memory card buy selling it to someone & come out paying less for than if you were to buy the regular black one... & end up with the color you wanted (if ytou like the color blue). Not that bad of a deal if you ask me. You could probably sell your old PSP on Ebay with the stuff bundled with the new PSP & only paying a fraction of the listed $200 price tag. There are different ways you can spin it to your benefit you just have to find an angle that works best for you.

I just want a PSP that doesn't have the fiber glass like shiny casing to it. It looks cool for all of five minutes, then you have finger prints ALL over it, and it's all scratched up, and it's a complete waste. I just want a PSP that's more like the material the PS2 and 360 are, that graphite solid coloring. No shiny, no nothing. That would be nice. Now put that in blue, and it would be all that much better.

mrkame: totally agree it sucks that they only bundle these, I would trade up my original black for a slick red or blue PSP, but I don't want the whole bundle it is too expensive and games I won't play.

Does anyone else think Sony's going a little crazy with the colors? I mean first they don't publish any colors, then two years later they create the slim with a few colors, now they're making a new color for every new game.

Honestly, I'm not being a smart@ss for once... but do people REALLY buy multiple hand-held consoles to just get different colors?

That's some serious cash just to have a different color. They all play the same....

Now, I completely understand getting whatever color you prefer if you don't already have one, but buying another one just for the color? Eh... maybe it's just me and I'm a major tightwad...

The Daxter bundle was the best deal around. A semi-decent PSP game, a pretty decent UMD (free Family Guy Freakin Sweet UMD? sure), and a 1G stick for $200. The Star Wars bundle stripped gamers of the added luxury of a good sized memory card for a limited edition PSP (which I will admit looks nice) and Star Wars Battlefront for the same $200. The impending God of War bundle looked to return to the art of giving back to the gamer, offering both a great PSP game (a little on the short side, but a keeper nonetheless) and a great UMD movie (all glory to Superbad). No confirmation on re-including the 1G stick, but the same limited edition decored PSP and $200 pricetag came with it. Now this.

EA's desparation to convince the world that Madden NFL isn't dead goes to many measures (it's rumored that they tried to convince Nintendo and Microsoft to develop GameCube and Xbox versions of '09, met with prompt "GTFO"- farfetched but I wouldn't put it past them). This is one of them. Nice looking PSP, and returning the 1G to the mix is great. But unless you really can't let Madden NFL pass you by and a random NFL UMD is your thing, this just doesn't cut it for me and my Silver Slim.

Now a shimmering gold DS emblazoned with the Triforce and bundled with Phantom Hourglass for $15 cheaper than buying both separate? Now THAT'S a limited edition bundle that keeps on giving.
