Cars drive onto Rock Band

This week's DLC features the new-wave band's self-titled debut album, with nine tracks.
By Emma Boyes, GameSpot UK
Posted May 21, 2008 9:36 am PT

The Cars merged new wave and rock music during the 22 years they were together, and now older gamers will be able to reminisce by strumming, drumming, and singing along to their first album.

The band hailed from Boston and was formed in 1976. Their first album, simply called The Cars, came out in 1978. Unfortunately, the band's most famous hit, "Drive," isn't part of the download, given that the chart-topper wasn't released until 1984. The band split in 1988.

The tunes will be available for download on May 27, either individually for 160 Microsoft points each ($1.99, £1.33) or as an entire album for 1,200 Microsoft points ($14.99, £9.99)

The full album tracklist is as follows:

"Good Times Roll"
"My Best Friend's Girl"
"Just What I Needed"
"I'm in Touch With Your World"
"Don't Cha Stop"
"You're All I've Got Tonight"
"Bye Bye Love"
"Moving in Stereo"
"All Mixed Up"

Rock Band launches in Europe this Friday, May 23, and as promised, all of the content that has been available for download in North America is now live and waiting for Europeans to start downloading, according to Larry Hryb on his Major Nelson blog.

Highlights include "Call Me" by Blondie, "Don't Look Back in Anger" by Oasis, and "Truckin'" by Grateful Dead. From this week's European launch onward, new content for Rock Band is set to be simultaneously available in both regions every week, including The Cars' album.

Yeah Cars sure y not? But I'm still annoyed that there is no U2 coming out for Rock Band! COME ON YOU HAVE GUITAR SINGER BASS AND DRUMS!! U2 IS A PERFECT FIT! Which reminds me I made a character that looks exactly like The Edge (Guitarist from U2) on my friend's PS3! Maybe I'm just a little obsessed...

Why the H*ll do they add artists that the majority of the population has probably never heard of before? What about that little group that you've probably heard of, y' know, Van Halen???!!!!!! I don't even own the game, or a system it is currently on!!! (yep, only thing i could afford was the Wii) It sounds to me as though I don't really want the game, because I want to at least play songs that I actually like AND know!!!!!!!

ahahaG ""never heard of the cars but im sure their music is alright. however, you all are hating on ace's music, but he listed AC/DC. and if you're calling AC/DC radio garbage then you need to go down the highway to hell and listen to your classic music more before talking. overall, cars could= alright content and a new album for sure""

How do you know AC/DC, but not The Cars?? You must be under 21 and born in the 90's.

The more music the better. People will complain no matter who the artiest is. No song is going to make every person that plays the game happy. Personally I'm just happy Harmonix is giving us the option to download more songs EVERY WEEK!

Wow, this was an interesting choice... I don't know if I'll get the whole album though. My PS3's HDD is filling up so fast with all these songs.

As much as I love Megadeth, Maiden, and other thrash metal bands....this is a great album, and it will get more people into Rock Band. I will buy this album, because most of these songs are true classics. Just give us a Megadeth album next time!! I WANT RUST IN PEACE!

zachbateman, Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden is available for download, as well as a 3 song pack by Black Sabbath. They're pretty fun, you should pick them up. They're all covers though.

Moving In Stereo + Phoebe Cates = One of the most Iconic scenes in movie history!!

Fast Times at Ridgemont High with The Cars playing "Moving in Stereo" with Phoebe Cates in the pool scene goes down as one of the defining moments of 80's classic teen movies.

This is a great selection by HMX. Many fond memories of that album

The Cars are okay; if they didn't let commercials use their songs so much, I probably might be a little more excited. I'm satisfied, nevertheless; "Just What I Needed" was one of the songs that I hope would be on Guitar Hero, and it somewhat came true. But who am I kidding? I really want Nevermind on Rock Band.

You know what though, this is far better then the last album. I'm curious what the sales were for that album because everyone I knew really didn't care for it at all. Not even the singles.

Man, Rock Band is awesome but so far the albums have been really odd.

I believe the correct title should be "The Cars drive onto Rock Band."

Awesome! I'd love to see more new wave and 80s hits in Rock Band!
"Drive" is rather a synthesizer driven hit. It'd be awesome if somehow a keyboard/keytar could be added for Rock Band. I still have yet to get this game though.

70s and 80s new wave ftw!

If Cars refers to a band, shouldn't this article be titled Cars Drives onto Rockband?

This is in terms of business, they want to appeal to a wide variety of customers so if someone happens to like Cars a lot they're going to buy their songs and Harmonix makes money...they don't care if the majority doesn't like the band.

Securing songs for use in these games is not simply a matter of contacting the artist and/or record label and getting the green light. The publisher of the song must grant a mechanical license to insure that copyright laws are not violated and that the artist's intellectual property rights are protected. The publisher is not necessarily the record company or the artist themselves. There are several legal and financial hurdles to be overcome before a song can be approved and released for use. There are probably songs and artists that you will never see/hear on these games because the artist simply will not allow it for whatever reasons.

Sometimes the artist and/or publisher does not care to have the original version of the song placed in the game or certain parts of the deal could not be worked out and that is why a "cover band" must perform them; hence the "As Made Famous By" tag. It is not simply a matter of the game designers being lazy.

Dr_Corndog, "Drive" was their biggest hit in terms of chart position. It reached #2 or 3 I think.

well the reason why they made this game was so a bunch of people could just get together and just play aka casual gamers and the DLC on the game for the most part isnt for the hardcore gamer with the exception of very few songs but i think we all know what songs those are
