$599 MGS4 HLE bundle online-exclusive

The "Highly Limited Edition"

Buried in yesterday's pile of Konami announcements--which included reveals of Rock Revolution and the obligatory passel of DanceDance Revolutions--were new details about a highly anticipated product. One month after revealing it was releasing the Metal Gear Solid 4 PlayStation 3 hardware bundle in North America, the Japanese publisher has now priced the package. For $599.99, gamers will get a gunmetal gray 40GB PS3, matching DualShock 3 controller, and a copy of what is being billed as antihero Solid Snake's final adventure.

Unfortunately, those wishing to leisurely pick up an MGS4 PS3 bundle at their local game store are out of luck. First, the bundle will only be available via Konami's online store. Second, the bundled is being billed as a "highly limited edition," with Konami playing up the fact that very few will ever be produced. Third, preorders begin sometime on May 19th, meaning those hoping to buy the console will have to repeatedly check the product page and be ready to pounce the moment it goes on sale.

Luckily those who can't acquire a limited MGS4 PS3 bundle can still get the regular MGS4 PS3 bundle--which is arguably a better deal, since it is $100 cheaper than the LE and includes a backward-compatible 80GB PS3 that can play previous MGS games. GameStop is also exclusively selling a limited edition of the now-gold game, which goes on sale in North America on June 12.     This edition of the bundle is for the die hard MGS fan with plenty of disposable income, and cares not that a better configuration of the game system with twice as much HD space is a available. This edition is cool don't get it twisted, if you have the cash go for, it make a great collector's catch. Especially if this is the last one Kojima might do.

    people people...sisters, brothers...this bundle 4 $600 is just 4 CRAZY individuals who want a gray PS3...go 2 gamestop and get the $500 bundle which includes the game, a 80GB ps3, and a controller...its the better deal...period...the 40GB can't even play old ps2 games only ps1 games which SUCKS!!! so that makes the gamestop deal even better...not sure if this deal will be offered other places...

    40GB PS3 = $400
    MGS4 = $60
    Dualshock 3 = $50
    Grand total = $510

    So basically, you're paying $90 extra to get a gray PS3. Whoop-de-freakin'-do. Much more reasonable to buy them separately.

    Highly limited edition so this is only for the most hardcore of fans. I know i'm hardcore for MGS4 but not this much.

    $600 DOLLLARS???? The PS3 is expensive enough the way it is, and it's just 40 GB???? Hasn't Sony learned that it's the PRICE that's scaring people away from the PS3

    why does it say on gamestop that the limited edition is exclusive to gamestop when in toronto i could pre order it at ebgames, futureshop and bestbuy. i know ebgames and gamestop are the same but what about bestbuy and futureshop? im pretty sure wal-mart has it as well also toysrus

    $600, this is a rip off. The 40GB PS3 only costs $400. So the game and an ugly paint job on the machine totals to a $200 increase in price!?! If I were going to spend that much, I could get the PS3, MGSIV and two other games and still save $20. Better yet, that's the cost of a Wii with four controllers, Wii Play, Super Smash Bros Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy. Or you could get the intermediate level 360 with four games - let's see, how about Mass Effect, Oblivion, GTAIV and CoD4. This has got to be wrong.

    When i bought my PS3 in DEC06 it came with 2 controllers. But I payed like 1100 for my bundle. I would rather buy the 80gig version if anything. Also @ andypolack this is NOT coming to 360!!!

    I literally called Konami and they stated to me directly that there would be no MGS4 PS3 bundles in America, period, from anyone including Sony. The Konami rep on the phone didn't know what he was talking about. But I guess you would actually need to read what I wrote to get that.

    Just a heads up, when you order this you will get charged an extra $500.00 insurance fee. Grand total came out to $1163.98 with next day shipping, the $500.00 insurance fee will be reimbursed when it ships.

    Of course Konami would never state another company's plans, that's why they simply say they're not releasing another bundle. They don't say "it will not exist", they say "they won't be releasing it". "There won't be another bundle... from us" see the difference?

    As for the website presale, I got to the point of placing the order, just for kicks (but didn't obviously). A minute later, Konami.com crashed. These consoles will go out REALLY fast. There will be just about enough fans and people in the industry interested enough to spend the $600. But not many more people, I guess. Average Joe will go for the 80Gb, no?

    I never said there wasn't an 80GB bundle, I said that Konami's official statement is that there wasn't going to be one which is obviously bogus now.

    It's just a case of the left hand not speaking to the right. Besides, how can Konami make official press releases or statements for other companies? Pretty stupid but it happens.

    Btw, it's now 2:05pm and still can't pre-order this version, which I wouldn't at this point knowing that there is a $100 cheaper, 40GB larger, backwards compatible edition coming out in piano black that matches my Samsung 1080p LCD

    @Neo2199 You want conformation of the 8GB/MGS4 PS3 bundle? Gamestop's wharehouse is getting them shipped on the week of May 25, the stores will get them the week of the first of june. Just to let you know.

    @Neo2199: Of course Konami denies the 80GB, as it is not being released "by them", it's being released by SCEA. So, they take cover saying "Konami is not releasing another bundle", they just don't also say "but Sony IS releasing it" so you just buy that edition from them.

    Hope they're delaying the presale re-thinking the model, and surprise us tomorrow changing plans and making the gun-metal gray an 80GB console. One can only hope.

    I've spoken directly with Konami. They COMPLETELY DENY the existence of the 80GB MGS4 bundle being released in America. They say that this weak 40GB, NON-backwards compatible, edition is the ONLY bundle they will release to the U.S. and Canada and that this version of the bundle it is ONLY one available to the U.S. and Canada.

    If you go to their website and click on the Konami Support FAQ, this is 100% supported by their website as well. They only offer two items, MGS4 regular edition and the 40GB limited edition PS3 bundle.

    As of May 19, 2008, 8:25am PST, I am STILL unable to make my Pre-Order on this bundle through their website It's just sitting in my account with a grey "Wish List" button and no green "Pre-Order" button despite my rabid refresh clicking.

    However, if you go to amazon.com you can sign up for the obviously 80GB edition (according to the screen shots). I know numerous local Gamestop managers and they all say there IS going to be an 80GB, BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE, Black Finish MGS4 PS3 Bundle available.

    My best guess is that Konami was given a handful of these 40GB editions to refinish and pump out and brand as "HIGHLY LIMITED". And as a consequence we get this lame 40GB, NON-backwards compatible edition.

    Sony is probably making their own release but there is absolutely ZERO confirmation of an 80GB MGS4 PS3 Bundle being released to us Americans. My problem is that I knew about these bundles for several months and I've waited and waited and waited. I've got a 52" 1080p LCD that's dying for Blu-Ray. If Sony delays this 80GB MGS4 Bundle for a Christmas 2008 release (which is most likely at this point to milk fanboys), that would seriously blow.

    Ya except it only cost like $30 more and came with gamer pics, cool paint job, exclusive controller, and a HDMI input. While the bundle cost $100 more for a paint job that is just another color black. I just saying if you get a ps3 to play MGS4. Save you money and get them separate. You have to be stupid to waste your money on this thing. Expecialy with gas prices going up!

    Yeah, if I needed to get a PS3, I'd definately get the regular MGS4 bundle 80GB PS3. Not only is it $100 cheaper, but the backward-compatibility it offers is the clincher.

    I'm a big PS3 fan (obviously) and even I think Sony is making a mistake by not offering backwards-compatibility with all models. Yeah, MOST people might have a PS2 already, but some don't and they might want to only to get the 40GB model....

    Anyways, they MGS4 bundles look sharp! I like the gunmetal gray... it really looks good.

    @MjD23, the preorder starts on the 19th. The bundle will ship when MGS is released on June 12th. If I were you, I would save $100 and get the game separately with the standard 80GB PS3, which looks better because it is shiny black. Plus you won't have to wait for it to be shipped to you. You would be able to play right away.
