Super Smash Bros. Brawl dated down under

June 26 picked as Brawl release date in Australia.

While American and Japanese gamers have been playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl for several months now, Australian gamers have been patiently waiting for news of a local release date. The waiting will soon be over, however, with Nintendo Australia today confirming that SSBB will be coming down under on June 26.

Similar to Mario Kart Wii, SSBB features a plethora of control schemes ranging from a Wii Remote and Nunchuk combination to the GameCube controller. Amongst crowd favourites like Mario and Link, the lineup of fighters has been expanded and now includes third-party characters like Metal Gear Solid's Solid Snake and Mario's old nemesis, Sonic the Hedgehog. On top of that, you can now go online and challenge players from around the world to fights and see how you size up against them.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl will retail for A$99.95. For more information, check out our extensive launch centre for the game.

Ouch... poor Aussies, waiting so long!

I don't know why some Aussies are saying they finally have a game before Europe. They got the Wii console before us, Zelda PH before us and now this! That's three of the biggest titles out there!

Could you get imported games cheaper?

    @videogamr49, gin_rummy89, etc.
(Basically) All Wii games are freakin' 100 dollars here in Aus! Doesn't everyone know that already?! LIFE IS UNFAIR HERE!!!

Yes, and it is about time they announced the release date.

Even though this is good news in the Sense that there FINALLY set a bloody release date instead of june some time, the fact that its 6 months after Japan and about 3 after America thats still bloody terrible also SCREW YOU Nintendo for charging it for $100 your treating the Wii like a 360 with games at that price

Guys, why are you suddenly complaining about the price of Smash Bros when it's the same price as every single new-release game released in the last few years? $100 is the standard RRP for a new-release game in this country...and in fact new release PS3 games can actually be as expensive as $120.

New-game prices actually have very little to do with exchange rates because the games are not directly "imported", so to speak.

So you have two options. You either live with it and pay the $100, or you don't buy from the major game retailers like EB or Game and buy from somewhere like JB Hi-Fi who are always at least $20 cheaper.

Finally, i can ditch the freeloader + Americas SSBB And get the Aussie one!!

  • Gizmometry

    Posted May 14, 2008 3:44 pm PT

Yes, it does indeed. The US-AU exchange rate is almost the same, so we're still paying nearly double what you Americans do. Bah.

I was thinking of getting the Freeloader at one stage to play the US version, but I reckon I'll just wait. Another month or so.

$100 dollars? Why's it so expensive in Australia

  • kevinsyel

    Posted May 14, 2008 12:22 pm PT

And here I was under the false impression that Nintendo cares about it's fans the whole time. I got the game release night in the US, and placed 2nd in a tourney to get it for free... but Damn, you guys have to pay a heap (not that I know the current conversion between USD to A$) for it and wait longer still?
    Sakurai can shove it

Man, no offense to people from Australia, but you guys suck when it come to having games come out. I suppose GTA IV isn't out either in Australia either?

Sorry if I seem like I'm offending you guys, but wow, SSMB coming out 4 months after the US release. Kinda doesn't make sense when you consider that both the AU and US versions are both in the English language.

Yeah, I feel for you Aussies. We Americans understand what it's like getting a game so late. It's just awful. At least you know you'll be getting it at the end of next month.

  • Kenji_Masamune

Being a american I'm usually always pissed that we get a game like upwards of 6 months to a year after it's been release in japan, but I gotta say that I feel for you aussies. You guys are pretty much south of the border (so to speak) and yet you get games like your at the ass end of the earth

$99.95 AU!? That's still about $94 US! Why is Nintendo charging so much for the game?

Finally! Thank god after so long! I'm so ready for it and I'm glad I didn't get the US version with the Freeloader.

yay more than a month to go but seriously, why pay $100. i undestand with mariokart when you get the wii wheel with it but why we need to pay $40 extra for just the game. this would make it the most expensive game without any extras, this is utter ********, first sony now nintendo, us PAL gamers get games later and now we pay more.

grrrrr things like this make me angry

but on the plus side SSBB is coming soon

Brawl? Oh, that game I was hyped for just before the American release and have now lost all interest in since then because of a lack of any information about it appearing on Australian shelves for what, a month after the US release?

This is good news! I got an US version of Brawl with a Wii freeloader back in March… but a local release means more online competition, which will be good.

It’s taken a while for brawl to get to Australia, hasn’t it?
