Viva Pinata getting smashed in Paradise

Rare's adorable papier-mache garden returns to the Xbox 360 this September with Trouble in Paradise.

It was scarcely a well-kept secret that Microsoft and Rare would be teaming up on a new console installment in the classic platforming franchise Banjo-Kazooie. So it came as little surprise when information on Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts leaked onto the Internet over the weekend in advance of the game's big reveal at Microsoft's Gamers' Day event in San Francisco today.

However, what wasn't on the radar for most was a new Viva Pinata game. Be that as it may, the UK-based developer said that it would be returning to its papier-mache garden with Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise.

Vibrantly colored pinatas once again play front and center in Trouble in Paradise, and Rare's latest offering will feature all of the original animals as well as 30 new ones. This time out, the nefarious Professor Pester once again has a mind to interfere in the lives of the pinata populace, and players must cultivate a garden to attract and protect the candy-filled critters.

Playing heavy into Viva Pinata as a brand, Trouble in Paradise introduces a card-collection element called Pinata Vision. By way of the Xbox Live Vision camera peripheral, players can scan in cards with additional pinatas that can then take up residence in players' gardens. Trouble in Paradise packs a number of other new features as well, including toys for the papier-mache beasts and a co-op mode, where one player controls the action and another acts as a garden hand.

Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise is slated to arrive for the Xbox 360 this September. It is the latest in a line of Viva Pinata-branded products from Microsoft and Rare that have included the 2006 Xbox 360 original and its 2007 PC redux, as well as Viva Pinata: Party Animals, a critically underwhelming party game created by Australian-based Krome Studios. A Nintendo DS edition of the game is also in development.

i am looking forward to it! When i heard of the first one I was all MANLY about it and said NO WAY lol. I bought it for my wife and vowed never to play it. Well i watched my wife play it and figured id get it a try,, Bad idea lol. It is a fun game that keeps you playing just five more minutes longer than you planned. Now to save any shred of manliness i have left I did turn it into a comptition with my wife to see who could get the rare pinata's first lol.

Game looks good but it's basicly paper mache sims. The Eye of Judgement / Pokemon love child twist actually sound like the coolest part of this new game.

I'm so excited. I just wish it had online co op. If it does, they didn't mention it. I'm not so sure I like the card idea. It seems it would take away from the challenge of luring and keeping the Pinatas, which is a big part of the gameplay. So we will see if I bother with that aspect. But I will be buying this game.

Cam aside I am looking forward to this game. I think the lack a true story kind of limited the games scope since in the end you are just manically playing to get more pinata's. With a story I think I will feel more like I am working toward some goal in game that is achievable and will allow me to say "I did it."

Overall, I was kind of let down with Viva Pinata. I think most of that is probably attributed to the fact that that despite being a seemingly mellow and relaxing game, the game is very fast-paced and pretty stressful. Much like The Sims, it's non-stop busy work. Plus you couldn't have one enormous, amazing garden with all of the pinatas, but instead had to separate them into different classes in multiple gardens, which I didn't care for too much. I found the game to be addictive, but mostly because of the fact that I never felt like it was a good time to stop and with so much work to do, it really seems to encourage you to keep playing.

Oh, and Ra-Devil, obviously GTAIV doesn't suck. Don't be ridiculous.

I became addicted to Viva Pinata... I played it for over 4 days straight with only a total of 8 hours of sleep.... not even Halo 3, Oblivion, or GTA IV (which sucks) could do that to me.

More of this brand is a good thing... certainly one of Xbox 360's better games, and a sleeper no less.

It's going to have to be 'wait and see' for me with this card collecting. I'm not buying a XBL cam for one game.

Other than that, I can't wait.

I think I was the only one ever to get theGBA to Gamecube adapter and use the card things to transfer stuff into animal crossings... and it was dumb. Then again, scanning things from the camera is just insane... Get ready for the robot apocalypse.

Maybe they are trying to tie in card based games and electronic based games...kinda odd though. Whatever, guys these Viva Pinata games work great for keeping your gfs occupied while playing other games...sure you loss your 360, but at least you can PC/MAC game in peace.

Although not for me (like Banjo), I have to give credit to MS for publishing a well balanced portfollio this year.
Ninja Gaiden, Gears, Fable, Banjo, Viva, Too Human, plus whatever I'm not thinking of.
Good job.

Cool, I loved Viva 1. Hopefully they will take the original game and just improve it, and not try to create a whole new game.
