Verbinski BioShocks Hollywood
Pirates of the Caribbean director helming adaptation of 2K's groundbreaking undersea actioner; Universal courting Gladiator screenwriter to pen script.
Gore Verbinski is returning to Davy Jones' locker. Having completed work on the Pirates of the Caribbean film trilogy, Verbinski has signed on for another oceanic epic with the big-screen adaptation of 2K Games' award-winning action game BioShock.
The publisher today announced the project in conjunction with Universal Pictures. The studio is in talks with Academy Award-nominated writer John Logan (Aviator, The Time Machine) to provide the screenplay.
In an interview with Hollywood trade magazine Variety, Verbinski said the film won't be on the same scale as his summer blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean films.
"It's a much more intimate story than Pirates," Verbinski explained. "Although it's an adventure, its a dramatic adventure. I see it more along the lines of Blade Runner."
Although the Disney ride-based films are his best-known work, Verbinski has worked on smaller-scale pictures as well. He directed the US remake of The Ring, as well as the 1997 family picture Mousehunt. Three months ago, he gave the keynote address at the DICE Summit, telling hundreds of the game-industry elite about his growing interest in games.
Verbinski also told the trade that he was prepared to make a BioShock movie rated R. Beyond the dark tone and violence of the game, Verbinski also said the "graphic nature of the story is smarter than that."
"The utopian references and the way the characters and world are drawn in that delightfully inspired Jules Verne and Ayn Rand style places the film in a more elevated realm," Verbinski said. "It's the realm of a graphic novel. It has to have that edge."
Variety also reported that Take-Two Interactive chairman Strauss Zelnick dismissed fears that the project would end up in turnaround like Universal's last big game adaptation--Halo--saying that the BioShock deal was structured specifically to avoid such a fate.
No projected release window for the film was announced, nor was the casting of any major characters--including the silent, faceless protagonist--revealed.

If they do it, I hope they do an equally impressive job in recreating the world of Rapture. There hasn't been a good video-game-adapted movie.

And immediately bash the idea.. GO! so apparently we aren't much for game-movies here. I admit none of them have been Oscar worthy, but if you look at the time line they have been getting "better" over time. Plus luckily this one has a movie esque feel to it, I mean the story flow was somewhat linear and very deep. So if they take it straight from that it "should be" good. Now it is time to play the waiting game and see if they are smart enough to see this.
I just have one thing to say to Mr. Verbinsky, "Would ya kindly make a good movie!"

Ahh! I'm very excited, but at the same time very afraid. BioShock has a very movie-esque story IMO, and seems like it could translate well if done correctly, but it could also be very easy to screw up. Hopefully, they'll do this right, because I think it'd be amazing. The "would you kindly" plot twist would be fun to watch unfold, and I really think the Big Daddies and Little Sisters will end up extremely creepy on the big screen.

Hey Shozz....didn't Uwe Boll direct the Hitman film? Because if he did then there's your answer for why the movie sucked hardcore.

Come on guys, this guy practically yelled at Hollywood for making terrible video game movies, just picture it, Jack Sparrow arrives in Rapture only to meet a mouse that can jump out of a tv and kill you with some kind of aztec, cheesey, ghost curse or something like that, nuff said.

I'm not liking this. Sure, it's great that a famous director can direct a movie adaptation of a video game, but Verbinski doesn't seem like the right man for the job. It needs someone with an attention to detail and atmosphere, not one responsible for summer blockbuster entertainment. David Fincher, the director of Seven and Zodiac, would be a perfect choice for this.
BTW, The Ring is an overcooked remake that pales in comparison to the original Asian film. Go watch that movie instead.

Sounds great but wil it be a horror film or more of an adventure with a little horror? I just hope it doesn't become a cut and dry horror movie, and focus more on the games story than the horror.

This is great news...
I didn't really care for the Pirates movies, but that was because of the actors and not the direction. Verbinski did an incredible job with the Ring, so I have no doubts he'll show Boll how a movie is done.

might make a good film, who knows, depends who is directing it, if its uwe bol then no, also if the cast are actually people that can act, so no one from home & away or neighbours then, it does make think what next though, lets hope its not pippa funnel the movie.

There aren't enough game-based movies that are good. Bioshock though seems to be made to easily be move to the Big Screen, let's hope they don't screw this up.

The Resident Evil movies were cool, and so was Silent Hill, although it could have been scarier. Hitman was cool, although it was very Bourn-y and not that Hitman-y. And this game was so cinematographic, a movie of it would be awesome. Can't wait to watch it.

Yeah, this could definitely be awesome, as long as they make it like a movie and not an obvious gimmick to pander to fans.

I'm curious, the only thing that has been making these movies suck so far is that no one has been taking them seriously. We only need one good one to start it off. Look at the superhero movies, from catwoman (sucks) to Ironman (rules) in just a few years!

This would be awesome if they actually stuck to the plot the made the movie just like the game. But I'm sure they won't, so they'll probably ruin it and it'll suck. Just like the Hitman movie.

The only best video game based movies for me would be Silent Hill, Double Dragon and Mortal Kombat. Others such as Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Super Mario Bros., DOA, Hitman are all such a bunch of garbage. The problem with these Hollywood idiots is that they didn't even consult with the creators of the titles which I find it really annoying. So for Bioshock, I hope the creator Ken Levine will make a huge contribution for the movie.

The thing with video games is that sometimes the most popular games don't have very good stories case in point super mario, mortal Kombat, Dead or Alive, Doom, tomb raider, double dragon, house of the dead, and Wing commander. Others like final fantasy and alone in the Dark strayed so far from the source material that they didn't even seem related to the games.

Even if Gore Verbinski intends this to be an 18 (or R) rated film, it'll probably turn out to be a lame by the numbers summer action flick. Most video game films are made by studios who want to turn a quick profit. The reason for my cynicism is the Hitman film. This could have been the film to break the so called curse of awful game to film adaptations and it looked like it would be that way for some time. But then 20th Century Fox ruined it by demanding that all the gruesome executions and tension that was ORIGINALLY going to be in the movie were replaced by more gunfights. The point I'm trying to make is that these films are commissioned by a bunch of boardroom directors who have never played video games but assume they all involve shooting people and blowing stuff up. They also have a tendency to just use a character or characters and then create a film around that paying no attention to the source material they've payed millions of dollars to use. In the age of Hollywood creative direction usually belongs to he/she who holds the purse strings and the chances are Universal are thinking Bioshock = Underwater blastfest, not the brilliant tragedy of Rapture and its inhabitants. Believe me you'll get more revenue for a film with lots of shooting in then one about how mankinds flaws prevent us from achieving a utopia.

If they made this into a movie it would be like Resident Evil 1. Thats the only video game movie that would compare to bioshock. Both take place underground in secret areas overrun with bad things.
