COD5 invading 'new theater,' next 007 COD4-powered

Publisher confirms follow-up to Infinity Ward's modern-warfare shooter will have new setting on Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, and DS; COD4 engine to power next James Bond game, due this fall.

Earlier today, Activision made known its dominance in the gaming industry, triumphantly proclaiming it had secured the top publisher slot in the US in terms of console and handheld software dollars. One of the crucial titles driving Activision's $2.9 billion windfall of annual revenue during its 2008 fiscal year was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the first contemporary installment in Infinity Ward's long-running first-person shooter series.

It goes without saying that Activision plans a new installment in the Call of Duty franchise during its 2009 fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2009. The publisher has released a new installment in the series every fourth quarter since the series launched in 2003. In today's earnings follow-up with analysts and investors, the publisher dished more details on the fifth Call of Duty game, first revealed in December.

"We'll launch on all four platforms we've participated on in fiscal [year] 2008," Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith referring to Call of Duty 4, which sold over 7 million units worldwide on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Nintendo DS in 2007. Griffiths then reconfirmed that "we'll [also] launch on the PS2 and the Wii," marking the series' return to the PS2 and Wii after a two-year hiatus.

In addition to announcing new platforms, Activision also revealed that Call of Duty 5 would again shift the setting of the series. "We'll bring the intensity of the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare title to a new military theater to engage our significantly larger user base which nearly doubled last year as new users came into the franchise," said Griffiths. (Emphasis added.) Recent unconfirmed rumors had the series returning to World War II, the conflict in which all games prior to COD4 were set in. The publisher did not say if series creator Infinity Ward or Treyarch (Call of Duty 3, Spider-Man 3) was developing the project.

Speaking of Call of Duty 4, Activision also revealed today that the shooter's powerful game engine will power the new James Bond game. The yet untitled project, which is being developed by Treyarch, is set for release this fall around the same time as the next 007 film, The Quantum of Solace. Its use of the COD4 engine almost assures the game is in development for the PlayStation 3 and 360, and leaves the possibility of a PC version open.

Infinity Ward did a killer job on Modern Warfare, but there is no need for a sequel for M.W.

Pacific War of WWII will come soon. (An Australian Campaign would freshing things up.)

All you guys want Vietnam. The Battle of Ia Drang featured in the Mel Gibson movie "We Were Soldiers" would be one good mission. First they need to hit it on Korea!

Battle of Imjin River (British Campaign)

The Battle of Incheon (American Campaign) Battle of Pusan Perimeter (South Korean Campaign)

I really hope that this game isn't going to be handed off
to another developer like cod3 was,

    Too Many Glitches+ Developer's Laziness= No Fun...
The only way this game is gonna be good is if Treyarch doesn't design it...
    not Treyarch!!! OMFG please NoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo!!!

I'm soooo done with WWII games, and I don't care if they are the greatest WWII game to come out in a decade. The fact that the makers of CoD2 are doing it just adds another nail in the coffin. How about a fantasy or scifi CoD... that would actually be pretty cool if they held true to the genre, but did it in an alternate reality setting.

If it is going back to World War II then it's going to be in the pacific theater. However, with the success of Modern Warfare, I don't think they will be going back to World War II this quickly.

Well i'm hoping that treyarch learned from the mistake that is COD3 and will do it good this time.Sure it wont be as good as COD4 but it might be up there with COD2 and COD4.

Why are they hiring developers that made a bad Call of Duty game to make the next one? And also why the overdone WWII? I'm stupefied. They are reverting back to bad old habits. Come on don't do this to us we want a good game like Call of Duty 4 (not to say COD 2 wasn't good). Anyways here's hoping I'm wrong. ::crossing finger::

It's pretty simple......if Treyarch makes this game (which they probably will), then it's going to suck. Just look at COD3. That game had NO business being called COD3. It's an insult to the Infinity Ward games. It was rushed, had tons of glitches, wasn't even much of an expansion pack, much less a new game in the series. Treyarch are hacks and if they make this game, I won't be interested in it.

But you have to think that even at it's potential best, it's not going to be much better than COD4. I mean it's only been a year. Look at R6: Vegas 2. Nice game, but it's more of the same. These companies just want you all to run out and drop $60 on another game just because you love the name that's on the front of the box.

Since this game is also gonna be on the WII, ima go ahead and say that Treyarch is going to be handling the development (I just don't see Infinity Ward making anything for the WII), .
Its propably just gonna be another modern day spin off of COD4.

Sice they do such a good job with WWII and a MiddleEastern setting, maybe they can do Vietnam or Korea this time. If there is anyone who can do the job right, it's Infinity Ward

If it's WW2 again, I'm guessing they'll do Pacific this time, because they have already covered all the other theaters. Or maybe from the German perspective on the Western or Eastern Front? Who knows what they might do?

CoD5 is the next CoD3. There is no way IW is going to be making this game. It'll be Treyarch and it'll be yet another disaster. I'll stick to CoD4, thank you.

As for the setting of CoD5, I'm thinking they'll timewarp back to the late 60's/early 70's and do a Vietnam shooter, which in the hands of Treyarch, will be a FAILURE of epic proportions! Wow, I'm realizing that I really hate Treyarch...

  • CsPityu

    Posted May 11, 2008 4:30 am PT

so they didn't say who is going to develop the game, Treyarch or Infinity Ward. Yeah like thats a real mind bender. If they don't want it being crap, then they should give it to Infinity Ward.

I'm sorry, but I think that COD4 is the best of the bunch

I also think that this game (COD5) is going to be a very average shooter that is going to try and just take as much money from the name as possible. I see Activision killing COD by either making IW make cod games forever (while they are good, no one can keep it up) or make other, lesser developers ruin the name from **** games.

Coffey85: "damn this is gona b crap. infinity ward owned when they made cod4, treyarch is going to ruin the series like cod2 which was rubbish"

First of all, CoD 2 was made by Infinity Ward. Second, CoD 2 is one of the greatest if not THE best game in the series.

It could be in the fuuuuutuuuuuuuure too.
    Which would suck.
They won't go back to WWII. And its way too overdone. Nothing they make in the next 12 months will compete with Hell's Highway anyway (if its WWII).

Korea had some fascinating battles, I think its very ignorant to dismiss it - go back to the history books. The Australians in *something* would be great. Vietnam or Korea with Australians would rock.

COD3 on Wii has to be one of the most pathetic game I've ever played, though...

I hope its WWII, its one of the few wars I enjoy playing in video game form. I had never played a modern war game in my life until COD4, and it looked great, but ehh, I was never a fan of modern era warfare,. Guess that comes from having a history degree, being a WWII flight simmer and being generally obsessed with the pre-1950 world. I would, however, like to see the Pacific theater done instead, it could be stunning with the jungles and insane combat that took place there.

Korea would be terrible. There is no glory and highly publicized movie avaliable to the public that would ever make it exciting to play. The Korean War would come across as a WWII game against Koreans with lamer battles. Name the battles you want, but it wouldn't be well recieved if it were made under a name other than CoD 5. I'm all for the Pacific Theatre of WWII, African/Mediterranean Theatres of WWII, Vietnam Conflict, or WWIII. Any takers? Oh and by the way, Treyarch only makes their console exclusive titles.

I'd like to see Call of Duty do Vietnam... although every mission would end with a "retreat" objective... alot of people are mentioning Korea, that could actually lead to some sick scenarios (here's hoping for some more candian perspective)

Hmm, i like that it is not confirmed that Treyarch is making it and sicne Treyarch is making 007 game, maybe Activision will make CoD5 (i hope so). As far as "new conflict" goes, this is a mystery. It cant be conventional WWII because it would not be a "new" perhaps it is Vietnam or Korea? hmm cant wait until it is revealed!

no pc *sigh* and it wont be WW1 because all youd do is jump of of a trench and get mowed down by the enemy or charge across a field to shoot the enemy in a trench. There wouldnt be anything to keep you playing really and the online would be horrible

I forgot the Pacific WW2 theater!!! Yes it's WW2, but the Pacific haven't got much FPS coverage. It's much more jungle-centric, less urban than the European war. Being Malaysian, may I suggest the Japanese invasion of the Malay peninsula, fighting the British and local soldiers, culminating in the last desperate stand in defence of Singapore. Or one where we search for the crew of a missing American sub near Papua New Guinea, one of them being JFK! See lot's of interesting stuff left for WW2.

CoD2 was not rubbish - it was one of the best launch titles for X360. many ppl played it in multiplayer then.

I wonder why is everyone forgetting about the possibility of placing CoD5 in World War...One. It was a totally different conflict than WWII - just check wikipedia or whatever. I think it's the best option. Vietnam is also good, but still, it was a conflict on a much lower scale.
