COD5 invading 'new theater,' next 007 COD4-powered

Publisher confirms follow-up to Infinity Ward's modern-warfare shooter will have new setting on Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, and DS; COD4 engine to power next James Bond game, due this fall.

Earlier today, Activision made known its dominance in the gaming industry, triumphantly proclaiming it had secured the top publisher slot in the US in terms of console and handheld software dollars. One of the crucial titles driving Activision's $2.9 billion windfall of annual revenue during its 2008 fiscal year was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the first contemporary installment in Infinity Ward's long-running first-person shooter series.

It goes without saying that Activision plans a new installment in the Call of Duty franchise during its 2009 fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2009. The publisher has released a new installment in the series every fourth quarter since the series launched in 2003. In today's earnings follow-up with analysts and investors, the publisher dished more details on the fifth Call of Duty game, first revealed in December.

"We'll launch on all four platforms we've participated on in fiscal [year] 2008," Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith referring to Call of Duty 4, which sold over 7 million units worldwide on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Nintendo DS in 2007. Griffiths then reconfirmed that "we'll [also] launch on the PS2 and the Wii," marking the series' return to the PS2 and Wii after a two-year hiatus.

In addition to announcing new platforms, Activision also revealed that Call of Duty 5 would again shift the setting of the series. "We'll bring the intensity of the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare title to a new military theater to engage our significantly larger user base which nearly doubled last year as new users came into the franchise," said Griffiths. (Emphasis added.) Recent unconfirmed rumors had the series returning to World War II, the conflict in which all games prior to COD4 were set in. The publisher did not say if series creator Infinity Ward or Treyarch (Call of Duty 3, Spider-Man 3) was developing the project.

Speaking of Call of Duty 4, Activision also revealed today that the shooter's powerful game engine will power the new James Bond game. The yet untitled project, which is being developed by Treyarch, is set for release this fall around the same time as the next 007 film, The Quantum of Solace. Its use of the COD4 engine almost assures the game is in development for the PlayStation 3 and 360, and leaves the possibility of a PC version open.

Please no more WW II first person shooters. COD4 is the best miltary game ever. Stick with the script, bring us more modern warfare, throw in North Korea, Iran, CHINA into the mix. And lets get it on.

There hasn't been a CoD game set in vietnam yet so that's my guess. Call of Duty 3 was decent, as was Big Red One, but nowhere near as amazing as the games IW developed.

I don't like anymore stupid World War 2 shooters! I like the modern setting for Call Of Duty 4 Modern Warfare because it is different the only thing that sucked about that game is you'd get shot out of nowhere with snipers the same goes for joining a room with your friend was a joke!.But it still was a good shooter even though it was a 1st person shooter..But why are they going back to WW2 shooters all over again!?.I'd rather see a sequel to COD4-that is sat in the future! and sorry people WW2 games should be over with already there getting to repetitive..Zzzzz

Treyarch sucks, they are a very sad excuse for a dev, and i would rather wait 2 years for Infinity Ward to create another masterpiece than deal with the S*** that treyarch will undoubtedly create.

Dont think it can top COD 4, given IW is not working on it.

Given some of the precedents set in COD4 (more chaotic battles, a bit more character development, flashback sequences, portraying some of the more brutal elements of war) I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the game involves Vietnam in some way. I think the engine may have enough power to bring the battle to the jungles. I'm imagining some pretty crazy Navy SEAL missions into POW camps, etc. Depending on what story they want to tell, it may not be the sole focus of the game, but I think they could do some interesting things with it.

I'm surprised that more companies aren't picking up and licensing that COD4 game engine. That game engine destroys the competition. Unreal is the only gaming engine that comes close. If a James Bond game, similar to the ones I played on Gamecube/ Xbox, comes out using that engine, I will have to check it out.

How about a fictional US civil war set quasi-modern/quasi-futuristic, like maybe a few years from now?

I personally think that Treyarch did some things in COD 3 that made COD 4 the game that it is today. I think Treyarch is a better developer for COD than Infinity Ward. If COD 3 wasn't WW 2. If it was a modern day war like COD 4 was. I would give COD 3 a higher grade. The reason I say this is because of the sounds used in 3 are a whole lot more realistic than the sounds in 4 were. In 4 it sounds like I'm shooting cap guns instead of LMG or an AR. This is my biggest beef with COD 4. The gunfire sounds were way too weak. Don't get me wrong I liked COD 4 but it lacked in this area of Audio. I hope that COD 5 will have a much stronger Audio than COD 4 had. I hope that they can learn from what DICE has done with the Audio for Battlefield Bad Company.

Odd... the artical says that the developer and setting has not been confirmed. Yet, Gamespot lists the dev as Treyarch and the setting/genre as "modern first person shooter".... hmmm, interesting.
I just had a thought: What if it is going to be a modern shooter that takes place in the jungles of S. America or Africa, fighting militant drug dealers or the like.... just a thought.

Infinity Ward did a killer job on Modern Warfare, but there is no need for a sequel for M.W.

Pacific War of WWII will come soon. (An Australian Campaign would freshing things up.)

All you guys want Vietnam. The Battle of Ia Drang featured in the Mel Gibson movie "We Were Soldiers" would be one good mission. First they need to hit it on Korea!

Battle of Imjin River (British Campaign)

The Battle of Incheon (American Campaign) Battle of Pusan Perimeter (South Korean Campaign)

I'm soooo done with WWII games, and I don't care if they are the greatest WWII game to come out in a decade. The fact that the makers of CoD2 are doing it just adds another nail in the coffin. How about a fantasy or scifi CoD... that would actually be pretty cool if they held true to the genre, but did it in an alternate reality setting.

If it is going back to World War II then it's going to be in the pacific theater. However, with the success of Modern Warfare, I don't think they will be going back to World War II this quickly.
