COD5 invading 'new theater,' next 007 COD4-powered

Publisher confirms follow-up to Infinity Ward's modern-warfare shooter will have new setting on Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, and DS; COD4 engine to power next James Bond game, due this fall.

Earlier today, Activision made known its dominance in the gaming industry, triumphantly proclaiming it had secured the top publisher slot in the US in terms of console and handheld software dollars. One of the crucial titles driving Activision's $2.9 billion windfall of annual revenue during its 2008 fiscal year was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the first contemporary installment in Infinity Ward's long-running first-person shooter series.

It goes without saying that Activision plans a new installment in the Call of Duty franchise during its 2009 fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2009. The publisher has released a new installment in the series every fourth quarter since the series launched in 2003. In today's earnings follow-up with analysts and investors, the publisher dished more details on the fifth Call of Duty game, first revealed in December.

"We'll launch on all four platforms we've participated on in fiscal [year] 2008," Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith referring to Call of Duty 4, which sold over 7 million units worldwide on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Nintendo DS in 2007. Griffiths then reconfirmed that "we'll [also] launch on the PS2 and the Wii," marking the series' return to the PS2 and Wii after a two-year hiatus.

In addition to announcing new platforms, Activision also revealed that Call of Duty 5 would again shift the setting of the series. "We'll bring the intensity of the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare title to a new military theater to engage our significantly larger user base which nearly doubled last year as new users came into the franchise," said Griffiths. (Emphasis added.) Recent unconfirmed rumors had the series returning to World War II, the conflict in which all games prior to COD4 were set in. The publisher did not say if series creator Infinity Ward or Treyarch (Call of Duty 3, Spider-Man 3) was developing the project.

Speaking of Call of Duty 4, Activision also revealed today that the shooter's powerful game engine will power the new James Bond game. The yet untitled project, which is being developed by Treyarch, is set for release this fall around the same time as the next 007 film, The Quantum of Solace. Its use of the COD4 engine almost assures the game is in development for the PlayStation 3 and 360, and leaves the possibility of a PC version open.

    i dont understand why they go from ww2 to modern back 2 ww2. modern warfare was so much better. now i'll have to wait 1 more year for c of d 6 to come out which is pretty s**t

    If Call of Duty: World of War runs on the CoD 4: Modern Warfare engine. How the heck do they fit that in to the Wii? If I remember correctly, someone from either Infinity Ward or Activision that nothing of CoD 4: Modern Warfare fits into the Wii. Now Activison has me confused.

    It better be modern warfare as the only other modern war games are dessert Storm 1&2 for last generation and socom which is only for the PS3 and the 4th installment hasn't come out to my knowledge.

    I loved COD$ and I love James Bond games and movies, And I'm wicked excited about this game! However, I was reading in an interview that (Daniel) Craig (an avid gamer) didn't want to do the game, but they made him. ??? Well, I hope it's good.

    Ok.... well going back like 66 years from COD4 is a little strange i loved COD4 n so did allot of other ppl. but im sure there thinking of something to make this game stand out.. well i hope so.. if it was set in modern time i would buy the game the day it came out.. but with this the way it is i'll wait to i see some reivews. But i hope this is the last WW2 they do n get back to making something new and fresh... like COD4 was.

    They got to be kidding right shifting back to WWII....
    Got me all excited for nothing... i fully download the video off xboxlive when i saw CODWAW and found disappointments come on now cant they see why is COD4 did so well compare with the previews ones... COD4 is the best game in the next gen games so far
    ever since its release i haven't touch any other games not even my fav game halo3...

    why cant they just keep it current modern war and add vehicles instead like halo or battlefield... btw battlefield bad company sucks just bought it and it doesn't feel right the engine and sounds is crap... but seriously why back to WWII... if i do buy this game i probably end up returning it in disappointments

    Stupid. Treyarch and WW2 has been done before, and it hasn't been worth much. Infinity Ward did a fantastic job with COD4. Why go back to WW2? Seriously. I won't buy the game just on principal.

    Bond + COD4 engine, however, is awesome.

    they already made that game. its called Frontlines: Fuel of War. look it up.

    in my opinion, i think they have two things going against them for this title.
    1.they are moving back to WW2
    2. yes, its confirmed, Treyarch is producing it.

    however, atleast they changed the front in the war. theyve never been to japan.

    I mean really, ANOTHER world war 2 game.There is already like 400 of them.A future one would be great.Like Frontlines Fuel of War, The graphics sucked,But i think the storyline was good.I know that IW could make a really good future one like frontlines exept better.

    As we all remember to Treyarch did COD3 and we all know what happened there a big stink in the pan it was. Which makes me wonder why is Treyarch getting another stab at this title, the way COD3 stunk unless a rabbit is pulled from its hat i'll wait to see what Infinity comes up with hopefully COD6 will be back to modern times, and please no futuristic stuff like Battlefield series did. ACtivision and the other developers should of stuck with what works and why Treyarch and WW2?

    I thin it's better to set it in the past than in the future, just look at GR: advanced warfighter. But I'm so glad it's coming to Wii. I know it will be much more impressive on X360 and PS3, but I reckon they'll still do a good job of it. Unless they hand Wii and PS2 development over to another developer, like with TH: project 8

    Personal for me I would like it if Call of Duty is back in WWII but thats just me. I also hope that James Bond game comes out good.

    to say the least, i think the move for a call of duty setting to go back to the world war 2 setting will be a drag for most of the people who never liked the call of duty franchise before cod4. sorry, but many people who are not interested in a history lesson dont plan on playing a game that is mainly only marveled by historians and the history channel. i believe people moved to cod 4 for the realism, the major departcher from the series, the story, and most importantly, its multiplayer on cod 4 was simply amazing. if you were to imagine world war 2 with these (accessories) then you only have a patch with updated graphics for the previous cod games. anyone can recreate world war 2, but as X-play says, to many adorn consoles and seriesly need to rethink the genre, and the only way to do that is to stop making ww2 games.

    I think COD5 should be set a few years in the future, say 2015. Russia and China have allied themsevles against Western powers for control of oil in the Middle East. This is a very real possiblity in the future and a great premise for a rich storyline.

    ok, here are my thoughts....if treyarch developed call of duty 5....i will be really upset. Infinity Ward developed three of the best FPS games ever (COD, COD2, COD4)...it would not only be a smart business move, but a genius marketing move to keep IW to develop COD5. No offense to Treyarch, but COD3 was a horrible release. they strayed too far away from the orginal platform. Keep IW to make COD5. And as for the "new military theater". I Think a return to WWII might be alright...or keep it modern. I had a discussion with a friend and we thought that, HEY, maybe a futuristic warfare game might be cool....but i think it may be a drastic move. So in conclusion...KEEP Infinity Ward!!!! PLEASE!!! OH PLEASE KEEP INFINITY WARD!!!! And keep it WWII or Modern Warfare COD4 IS AWESOME!!!! HALO SUCKS!

    what i want is a GOOD vietnam game... there are too many WWII games out and, lets face it theyre all going to get overshadowed by Brothers in arms Hells Highway... Modern warfare was nice too, but its been done, and i dont think IW can do it again without it feeling the same as COD4.... basically, Vietnam is the way to go. Or WW1 just for a little variation... thats nearly never been done...

    Personally, I think one more WWII game would be fine if it was set in the Pacific. The only good game in that theater is MOH Pacific Assault and even that lacked in a few places. I'd like to see the Filipino resistance and the fighting in China and how about an actually good Iwo Jima level.

    now since i know their making wii version, they should get every ounce of goodness that wii can offer. oh vehicles and 32 multiplay would be nice
    ps: i hope they dont put options only for ps3 and x360 like customising weapons. oh and how bout a squad option?

    g dont go ww2, i have noting against like im a ww2 buff but its just that cod4 was amazing, just keep it the same continue soaps story, and make online real fun maybe with some like humvees and **** just dont go ww2 or future

    its more interesting if it done in Euro or even US or Russia !!!
    Modern Euro WarFare will beatifull !!! they havent war in countrys but if a war be there it soooo GOOD (and new thing) !!!
    thinking a war in new london or rome or paris !!!
    a sniper war in those cities !!!
