We Ski gets gold

Namco Bandai's Balance Board-compatible downhill-skiing game ready to tackle retailers later this month.

Nintendo is set to launch the Wii Balance Board as a bundle with Wii Fit on May 19, but the first game compatible with the peripheral will actually arrive in stores a bit earlier. Namco Bandai Games America announced today that We Ski for the Nintendo Wii has gone gold and is set for retail release on May 13.

More sedentary gamers will have a choice in controls, given that We Ski supports the Wii Remote and Nunchuk as well as the board. It also includes freestyle, slalom, mogul, and downhill-racing game modes, more than a dozen different tracks, customizable characters, and support for gamers' own Mii avatars.

We Ski is rated E for Everyone and will retail for $29.99. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

For those who are mocking board / ski games, there are quite a few reasons that people would purchase a game over going to the slopes:

    1) Lift tickets cost anywhere from $45-60 dollars with an additional 18-30 for rentals if you don't have your own equipment.

    2) Some people have serious leg / ankle injuries which have made their skiing / boarding days over

    3) Some people might have a fear of speed on a board / two smaller boards and cannot find the full enjoyment in skiing / boarding

So seriously. Quit being a bunch of elitish @#$$@(&%+)*+E$@$ and let people enjoy their games.

With the $30 price tag, this has me interested, but since I believe there's a skiing game in Wii Fit if maybe I should wait for a bigger game. If it's good enough though, I'll get this.

And (somewhat off topic) I've also been wondering about what the balance board could do in the future. Playing Mario Kart I thought the wheel was cool, but could really use pedals. Then I thought of the balance board and began to wonder...

That's a cool idea. I'd like to see some devs do stuff like that. I own a PS2, GC and PC with a 8800 graphics card. But the Wii is the ONLY 7th gen console I actually want. Other than Wii, I'm perfectly happy with my older PC, GC and PS1 & PS2 games. What can I say? The 6th gen (PS2/XBox/GC) rocked and the 7th gen (PS3/360) is just slickly produced, highly predictable, over-priced, propietary crap.

I think a cool game for the Balance Board would be some sort of Arabian Tales game -- you could sit Indian-style on the board, and lean around from side to side while flying your magic carpet.

@skyline7284 - Thats assuming they can be bothered to get up and get it, can fit through the front door and not pass a McDonald's on the way. :p
But seriouisly the balance board has tons of potential

    Posted May 4, 2008 11:58 pm PT

@nate1222 - There is a balance test on Wii fit which has you taking steps. This could be well implemented in something like Dragon Quest Swords 2 (if they make it). You take steps to move forwards, the nunchuk to change direction and the Wii remote to slash and stab. Sound good? I sure like the idea.

Companies are ALREADY finding cool things to do with the Wii Fit Board. Devs can do alot of cool stuff with the Wii without astronomical costs. This means there'll be tons of variety on it. All the more reason to get a Wii!

Just for an indication of what Wii Fit is capable of, I was out DJing last night (saturday night always out!) and my wife racked up 30mins playing Wii Fit and set some interesting high scores for me to try and beat - she's also unlocked more of the game than me now. It's amazing how it moves people.

americahellyeah - The Wii Fit is just about the best made peripheral for the money I have ever seen or purchased - it also comes with a well rounded set of game s to play with it. You'd have to be 155kilos not to want to play on it - because then you can't!

Foxpro, you are so horribly, horribly wrong. Do you have ANY idea how many casual gamers there are? A LOT. And besides, it's sold so much in Japan, it will easily sell as much in the U.S.. You should seriously think twice before saying bs like that. And learn proper grammar for your own good.

If you don't think it will take off in the US, then you don't understand the market at all. It's already on the bestseller list at GameStop and #1 in video games overall on Amazon -- over GTA4 and anything else, and it's a pre-order! Wii Fit will sell over a million, easy.

wow, just when you thought that nintendo couldn't come out with a worse gimmick game than wii sports/play
the wii board is the worst effing video game accessorie i've ever seen. Nintendo is all about the gimmicks now

  • gatsbythepig

It's going to be terrible. I have been skiing and snowboard for 32 years and I have never found a simulator that is fun. Plus if you don't feel the G-forces, the board needs to tilt to compensate for the leaning that actually occurs when riding.

Nintendo Power gave We ski a 7.0 or 7.5, somewhere around there. I don't think i'll pick it up.

We ski? should have taken the pun. Although sking games are fun they take alot of tries to complete harder courses like on the more popular sking titles, like ssx. I hope they either lower the difficulty or make you exert minimum energy, because I don't know about you guyes but its gona get tiring for me after an hour or so of sking down insane slopes. I realy don't want my cause-of-dearh to be "Heart attack from We Ski."

    lol, no Wii pun.
BTW, can you buy the Balance Board separately?

  • TexasAnMGrad2K

    Posted May 3, 2008 8:41 am PT

The balance board has the potential to make for some interesting and fun games. Wii Fit will surely take full advantage of it. But the key issue here is whether or not the developers will really sit down and come up with competent and executable controls for games. All the Wii owners know about this when it comes to half-assed motion controls for the Wiimote. I'm sure we'll see our fair share of skiing/snowboarding, dance, exercise, skateboarding, surfing games for the board. Hope the developers take the time to perfect the controls though.

    Posted May 3, 2008 7:25 am PT

For $30 I might check it out, or at least rent it from Gamefly. The balance board is an interesting idea, and even if it doesn't take off I'll still probably have fun with it. I'm hoping there will eventually be a Tony Hawk or Skate version, though.
