Microsoft cuts 360 prices across Asia

Xbox maker reduces hardware prices in Taiwan, Honk Kong, Singapore, and South Korea by up to 20 percent.

Microsoft is continuing its attempts to gain a foothold in the Asian gaming market with the Xbox 360, and the latest part of that effort is a series of hardware price cuts. As reported by The Wall Street Journal and later confirmed to GameSpot, Microsoft is lowering the price of the Xbox 360 hardware in Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Each country receives a different price cut, with Singapore gamers getting the biggest of the breaks at nearly 20 percent to SGD$499 ($366). Taiwanese Xbox 360 prices will drop 17 percent to NT$10,360 ($340), with Hong Kong gamers receiving a drop of nearly 11 percent to HKD$2,499 ($321), and South Korean systems falling barely beyond 5 percent in price to settle at KRW$369,000 ($367). Korea's price cut goes into effect on Thursday, whereas the remaining drops are effective as of today.

The Wall Street Journal article included a quote from Microsoft saying that the cuts were part of the company's "ongoing strategy to bring Xbox's high-definition gaming and entertainment experience to an even wider user base."

    The price was suppose to drop in singapore, but all the retailers have kept their prices high so it doesnt change anything :'(
    If you think the prices are bad back in the states, you should see how horribly over priced they are here. It can cost as much as 700 bucks.

    EDIT: today i saw one priced at almost 900

    @ goldeneye_basic. You're entitled to your opinion. Gaming is a hobby of mine, and like any gamer I like to talk about my hobby. My intention isn't to "bash" the 360. I'm critical of it's flaws just as equally vocal about it's strengths as I am with the PS3, as I am with the Wii. The difference is the majority of the BS you read in these forums is directed against the PS3. If it were the other way around you'd label me a 360 fanboy because I'd be arguing the myths regarding the 360 as untrue. But that's not the reality. The reality is the majority of people on this site are 360 fans, and while there's nothing wrong with that as I consider myself a 360 fan, where ever you have fans you have people that take this too far. Sony has these as well, they just aren't as prevalent. If we all collected model trains and some argued the blue grain cars are better than the red grain cars, and some took it upon themselves to make up lies about the red train cars (wonky wheels or parts that break off and choke babies), if I were a model train enthusiast I'd be right here trying to argue reason. Now if red grain cars did have wonky wheels and I knew this from experience I couldn't really argue against that point even if my preference was for the red grain cars. I'm not going to attack people when I know they have valid arguments, even if they are a bit overzealous about their opinions. I will take issue with misconceptions and opinion masquerading as fact, and I won't shy away from stating my own opinion. Price cuts aren't going to save the 360 in Asia, or even Europe for that matter, and it's a shame because it's a great system even with MS's mistakes.

    @Darkride, favoring the PS3 doesn't make you a fanboy, your constant defense of the PS3 and no defense of the 360 makes you one. You could have also mentioned in your post to Autocylcus that corrupt was posting misinformation like only FPS's are on the 360 and it's is a bad system, etc, but you didn't. "When I defend the PS3 it's usually against something that's not true like "Has no games,"". Isn't saying the 360 only has FPS's and nothing else the same thing? The point of the 6 disks quote was more the fact that he said the 360 is "gimped". Whether anyone has valid points or not has nothing to do with how they say those points when determining if someone is biased. If all that someone like corrupt does is post negative 360 comments and then calls others who post negative PS3 comments Xbox fanboys, then there is great hypocrisy there. I agree that the PS3 is a better value for hardware, but when comparing console game exclusives, I would take the 360.

    @ goldeneye_basic. I haven't rushed to the Xbox 360's defense in this whole thing because I think CorruptGamerGX has valid points, even if he's not the most tactful poster on here. When I defend the PS3 it's usually against something that's not true like "Has no games," or "the online sucks," or some such nonsense. Let's have a look.

    I think gimped is a little harsh, but in MS's rush to get the console out to us they settled with old tech, and in this day and age we shouldn't see games released on 6 disks. Not at this point in the game. More a problem is the lack of a standard harddrive, which developers have been very vocal about. It's an issue. Recently the Ghostbusters developer said they wanted way more going on with their title, but they had to contend with no harddrive on the 360 and so the PS3 version has suffered because it has to be ported to the 360's specs. How many games out there could have been that much better if MS had included a standard harddrive like the original Xbox?

I can't see the 360 having much trade in value, knowing and having suffered through it's hardware issues. If you bought a launch console and have gone through 2 or 3 consoles already, your time is just about up. In a few months when your 4th refurb console goes you're on your own. Even though they do make up the bulk of the 360's famed exclusives, I don't think that will help them at all in Asian markets which traditionally shun FPS.

    I can't agree with this one. I've had a blast with my 360 over the years but unfortunately faulty hardware has marred my experience. Up until the fall last year when people asked my opinion I wouldn't hesitate in recommending a 360 to them, although I would caution them that rrod was a problem and, even though it's less of a problem now it still exists. My launch PS3 got zero play time for the first 6 months. Now all that has changed. It's come down in price so that the only difference between it and the 360 is the $50 you pay your first year on XBL. You have the added bonus of Blu-Ray (if you have the setup to take advantage, or will have one) and what was a rocky start with few titles and bad ports is over. I think the 360 is a good system but I think if I were getting in new at this point the PS3 offers a better value now. How does that make me a Sony fanboy as opposed to an informed gamer?

    Talk about wall-of-text. How does bashing the 360 make me a Sony fanboy? I would be a Sony fanboy if I only owned Sony consoles which I don't. Oh wow, like swapping 2 discs is similar to swapping 6. I don't see the problem saying 360's best genre is FPS's, because it's true. Most FPS's released on the console will kill the competition of any other genre. You 360 fanboys always say the PS3 has no games, do you see my crying? No.

    Where did I ever say that I didn't want the 360 to drop in price? Oh that's right I didn't. Lowering the price now will have no effect, they did it for the US, Europe and Japan and recently it's still getting Whooped by the PS3 and Wii.     Well just as an observance, was in taiwan last month and sales of 360s were pretty sluggish, even with the Mod-chip scene there. Wii modded and unmodded were still selling #1, the PS3 has had some improvements since last year when I was in taiwan, but still like in the states behind wii, DS sales. The PSP however has jumped from the 1 month. Main issue is the 360 and xbox in general don't have enough jrpgs. They tried to get the asian crowd with Blue Dragon, but it wasn't the blockbuster they banked on. Asian market just doesn't really care that much for FPS.

    This will definitely boost sales for MS in Asia a lot,money is a big thing.There's a lot of good games to buy and as long as they here about them,the Asians will give heed to an American product.One thing though,they tend to buy domestic products much more and ignore American stuff as much as they can,therefore Nintendo can't have bragging rights about Japan because that's its base,same with Sony.On the other hand,America buys all

Also, how many people know about Flextronics and Asus? Is that what's written on the cover? I thought the only thing you see on the console is Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo. I guess most people aren't as educated as those who do know that. Are Dell computers popular in Asia? I'm asking because I don't know. From what I heard, they got Sony, Toshiba, Acer, etc. Isn't Dell's components from Asia?

    Seriously back off with all the "ignorant" comments. My parents moved back to Taiwan after I went to college. I ask them if American cars are doing well there because they sure aren't here. It doesn't sound like anyone they know has American laptops. I'd like to think I have a little credibility.

    As for the topic, I still think it's a good idea to cut the prices. Simply put, it's strictly about business. As for what else is going on in this message board, I'll just ignore that.

    @ CorruptGamerGX. It's pointless, isn't it? You can't talk about game issues around here because even if you have a valid point, if you aren't 100% pro Microsoft they jump all over you. Look at my post where I responded to you. Simply pointing out that the PS3 is a viable gaming option at this point and questioning how PS2 failures from 8 years ago are relevant to anybody presently apparently makes me a Sony Fanboy. I like the 360, have great respect for the library of game out on it and even after being on my 4th console, I'm a little miffed, but I'd do it again. I'm a gamer, and quite possibly a sucker. But it doesn't matter how many pro 360 statements you've made in the past. If you have even one criticism with the way MS does something, or if you don't bow at least once a day in the direction of Redmont you're a Sony Fanboy. What's nice is that while these jokers go home and can only play on their 360 because their faith demands it, I'm lucky enough to go home and play on whichever system I want to, and enjoy everything all three systems have to offer without ridiculous console prejudice standing in my way of being a gamer. Being labeled a Sony fanboy sure hasn't stopped me from enjoying a helluva lot of 360 games since it launched, or the Wii for that matter..

    Now Now Children. Every system has its pros and cons. They all will use the price cut strategy sooner or later for one reason or another. Calling it lame is ignorance. If you all had a brain you would know that its a losing argument. If you truly want to satisfy all your gaming "Needs" then you would stop playing games for two weeks-get a job-get both systems-get the games that suit you best. Pointing out downfalls is like pointing out buttholes. Hence, We all have them!

    Being biased is a good way to lose out on what each has to offer. Use your head. Use opinion on the games themselves. Afterall, it happens to be the games that matter.

    The strategy to lower prices is regions where demand is low is not abnormal for any product and/or service. More like Business as usual.

    Are the PS3 fanboys still invading posts like this trying to trash the 360? are you guys mad that a game that for the longest time, would only come out on the Sony system for launch came out on the MS's system, oh and to makes matters worst, our 360 version gets the exclusive 2 part download packs? Its ok, Sony had its day with the PS2, but now its someon elses turn to be the #1 in the console wars, and its MS. Don't be sad, your PS3 is nice, and has some alright games. Its not the MS fan's faults that well the 360 is nice, and also has a very nice(if not the best) games availble. Anyone, can't we all just get along? lol

Mircosoft's strategy is lame, they're just lowering prices because the PS3 is whooping them Worldwide, remember when the PS3 and Wii 1st arrived? wouldn't it have been smarter to lower the prices back then to keep the momentum going? but hey it's Micro**** where gaining max profit comes first.

    The 360 has a pathetic amount of games in any other genre, FPS's and Sports games easily overshadow the rest. Controller porst have nothing to do with a games success, you do realize the PS1 was an upgraded SNES CD add-on which featured 2 controller slots at the time. Nope my points are valid. Autolycus and the other 2 fanboys secretly bash the PS3 in their profiles because they're scared of getting torn to shreds by Sony fanboys.

    My posts are also getting negative while the other 3 360 fanboys who are doing the exact same thing as me are getting positives. Proof of being biased against Sony.

Then you use the standard fanboy argument that the 360 only has FPS's. There are a bunch of RPG's, sports games, racing games, fighting games, etc for it. "8000 FPS's", aren't you being a little dramatic? You want to know why the MS consoles have so many successful FPS's on it? It is because the first XBOX came with 4 controller ports. Being a standard feature, it was easy for game developers to make many 4 player games, which is the best gaming experience there is if you have any friends. The N64 had 4 ports, the Dreamcast had 4 ports, but Sony decided that it wasn't a good idea to put 4 on the PS2. Therefore, there aren't that many good FPS exclusive franchises that have been established for Sony. I didn't buy a PS2 just because it didn't come with 4 controller ports and 90% of the FPS's that I play are on the PC. This generation, Sony is finally getting good FPS's. Saying the 360 only has FPS's is as lame as saying the PS3 doesn't have any good games on it. If Live has overpriced content, then don't buy anything on it. If Autolycus' points are void because he is a "100% Xbox fanboy" then your's are too.

    I think you need to read a little harder. WHERE IN HIS POST IS HE DEFENDING ME?. He's just saying criticizing my opinions is pointless because he spouts more negative points towards the PS3 than I do the 360.

    It's like I said earlier, his points are void because he's a 100% Xbox fanboy.

    Flame on gentlemen. To respond to this topic though, the 360 will never succeed in the asian maket because it lacks the other game types aside from FPSs. RPGs are big.. and even though M$ bought a team of RPG masters, with a game that should have been huge (Lost Odyssey), they still have not and will never get a foot hold in the japanese market. Maybe if they drop the price down below WII levels, then they might gain a foothold... but I doubt that M$ will mark down the price over 60%.

    Wow, you defend CorruptGamerGX, and ultimately the PS3, from Autolycus, because Autolycus posted his opinion against the PS3. Yet, CorruptGamerGX flat out said that the 360 is not a good console. Why is it you don't defend the 360 if you are supposedly unbiased? You said in an earlier post that "It deserves to get a little respect outside of North America." What, inside North America it doesn't deserve any respect? It surely never gets any respect from you.

    Sorry, I don't need to wake up, it's not my fault that the truth hurts. PS3 may not haver many exclusive but it's excusable because it hasn't been out for nearly 3 years like Xbox 360.

    Are you stupid? Of course GTAIV for PS3 has online, it just doesn't have DL missions compared to the 360 because Sony didn't kiss R*'s *** for $50 million to lure gamers into buying an inferior version. Why bother bringing up the PS2 in this argument, PS2 is LAST GEN.

    You, delta3074 & _guenter_26 are all 360 fanboys. What's the point in arguing with me if all you guys are 100% biased and worship Microsoft. Your profiles also give me a laugh, all I see is 360 has better games, graphics, hardware, online service, blah, blah, blah.

    I may not like 360, but at least I know the pros and cons of all 3 next-gen consoles.

    @ Autolycus. I don't want to be seen as taking sides but I find your criticism of corruptgamerGX more opinion than anything else. You complain about exclusives, but seriously, what does that matter? It's the Burnouts, the GTA's the COD4 type games that make people buy consoles, and most of the top titles are multiconsole. Think about it, you can buy a $350 360 to play these titles and then shell out an extra $50 every single year to play 100% of the games you buy, or you can spend $400 on a PS3, play the same games, not have to spend anymore for the "privilege" of being allowed to play online and you get a Blu-Ray player just for the hell of it. Will you miss out on Gears and Halo? Sure, but if you haven't played these titles yet, what are the chances that you're ever going to play these? As for you dragging up the PS2's failure rate, that was almost a decade ago, and we never did find out how many PS2's had the problem in the first couple of years, just like we don't know what the 360 failure rate actually is and probably never will. My personal experience puts the failure rate at 75%. I'm on console 4. PS2 hardware issues aren't a problem anymore. 360 issues are. You're so quick to rush to Microsoft's defense I think that makes you a little blind to some valid criticisms that, as gamers, should concern us.

    I still think the 360 is a good system. Definitely has its problems but what in this world doesnt? You guys should know by now that nothing that is sold by corporations live up to your expectations because media does little beyond lying through their teeth to get your money. Either way I guess for those people on the flip side of the planet, lucky... =P
