Unreal Tournament III having a 360-degree summer

Midway's popular sci-fi shooter will finally arrive on Microsoft's console in a few months with split-screen play, three new maps, two revamped maps, and three new characters.

Fifteen months ago, Midway Games announced its competitive shooter Unreal Tournament III would be headed to the Xbox 360. The news came as a bit of a shock, as the game had previously been touted as a possible PlayStation 3 launch title and was the console's answer to Gears of War, Epic's wildly popular 360 shooter. (Both games are also available for the PC.)

Later that year at the E3 Media & Business Summit, some ruffled feathers at Sony were smoothed by the news that UTIII would have timed PS3 exclusivity on consoles, with the 360 version not arriving until sometime in 2008.

For the next nine months, the 360 UTIII hung in limbo as its PS3 iteration narrowly made its fourth quarter 2007 release target. Today, though, Midway and Epic announced that owners of Microsoft's console would finally get their hands on the highly rated action game "this summer."

Though far from a definite lockdown date, the announcement means the game will most likely arrive between late June and early September. The Xbox 360 version offers everything released for the PC and PS3 editions, including all updates and patches, plus the split-screen play, three entirely new maps, two revamped maps, and three brand-new player characters.

    Yes atleast this one will have split screen i played the ps3 one an i felt like it was missing it so yahh! XD

    brothers in arms hells highway (although i'm a bit pissed off that its gonna miss its original date my a year)

    unreal tournament 3

    Halo wars (if it ever comes out i haven't heard anything in ages)

    Maybe if someone could figure out a way to hack the 360 so that you could use mods for UT3, then maybe I'd buy it for my 360, but of course that's probably not gonna happin so...I don't think i'll waste my money.

    VirtuaCast - I was an original xbox fan as well as any other system you can think of back in the day... yes, mech assault and unreal were GREAT games..... i think U R WRONG THOUGH. UNREAL MEANS MORE to PC gamers than anyone else... that said, I still wouldn't buy the game for my PC, PS3 or my 360.

    I think i'll give this a miss. Its not as if there arnt any good FPS's out now is it *cough* GTA4, COD4, etc *cough*. sorry midway, looks like you missed the boat!

    I think that when UTIII comes people are going to be hooked with Bad Company and waiting for GOW2 so it wont sell that good. It is too late, old news. I doubt that I'll buy it.

    To little too late, might have cared if they'd have given it us at the same time as the PS3 but i wont be forking out £40 for a PS3 cast off. Roll on Bad company please and lets leave the Unreal for the PS3.

    Im waiting for SEPT this fall is going to be a great one for the PS3 and 360 as well as the RTS games i want are coming out on both systems.

    One of the first Xbox live enable games was Mech Assualt and Unreal, you guys have no clue what the series means to xbox fans. Who cares if 360 fans are happy and they sure in the hell don't have to explain them selfs. PS3 fans were stoked about Unreal, but 360 fans can't be? oh pls shut up.

    yep, if you have a PS3 or PC and you've played this, you already know it's not going to be anything special on 360 either. save your money, there are better games on the way for ALL our great systems. Personally, I'm just waiting for MGS4 and NinjaG2, c'mon June/July.... I'm ready for some hardcore!!

    The map packs are free on PS3 so it really doesnt matter. I dont know why 360 fans are happy though. They got a better thing or if lucky things to look forward to. As a owner of all 3 consoles, I am going to say that Gears of War 2 is going to be the best Xbox 360 game of the year although I do not really care for it. If Killzone fails to take the spotlight, then I think Resistance 2 will be the big game of 2008. The Wii pretty much has nothing left after Mario Kart. All of their cards have been used up. It sounds like a bad strategy but it is actually good for them because the gamecube failed to sell because its lack of good games and the good games were spaced too far apart. Other than gears of war 2, microsoft has halo wars, which probably wont sell so much because there are not that many RTS fans as there are FPS. 2008 is going to be the biggest year in gaming ever.

    The Unreal Franchise is one of the best FPS franchises available. I have not played UT3 yet because I'm waiting for the Xbox 360 version. I'm a sucker for achievements.

    UT3 was a major let down on the PC. It was a huge step back for the unreal series. I'd save your money for a good FPS.

    Old Snake is also available. So UT3 is the only game where Master Chief, Samus Aran and Solid Snake can duke it out in a deathmatch!

    Not only maps, but also characters (even the likes of Master Chief, Samus Aran, Spawn or the Starcraft Marines), gameplay types (such as UT2D (which is totally awesome! I played that all weekend), Mutants, 4 teams DM or Eliminitation) and vehicules.

    would have got this on 360 if it came out when the PS3 version did.

    I played this on PC already and the whole health system feels really dated. Also the ability to just carry around unlimited weapons seems a little bit ridiculous. UT3 is still alright, but I don't expect to be a huge hit on the 360.

    mate, the failure rate of xbox 360's is still climbing, u might be right and say that after aug 07 the failure rate of those xboxs is much lower, but to the other 20 million ppl who bought xbox's before them, the rate was 30%, but of just those 20 million ppl, that rate increases all the time, as the problems are due to overheating and prolonged use, of those original 20 million ppl, there xbox's might be fine for a year maybe 2, but then they break, and i know theres ppl out there who can say they got theres on launch day and its still fine, and yh it might be, but for how long is the real question... its just typical fanboyism to say oh why do ppl go on about the 33% failure rate, dont look at those figures, just look at the figures since aug 07, when they released the elite... unless ms are gunner replace every broken xbox with an elite edition, ppl will moan and moan about this for yrs, and it serves ms right for selling out to the lowest bidder.

    zippydsmlee the 30% failure rate is a thing of the past show me proof that 30% of 360's made after august 07 have rodded (that's the falcon 360 for the uneducated) and the pc maybe more powerful but i don't have to worry about system requirements if i buy a a game with xbox 360 written on the box it's guarunteed to play in my machine.i also don't have to worry about viruses, spyware, unstable os and i don't have to optimise my xbox 360 just to get it to run games properly.this is turning into the year of knocking the 360 it's getting on my nerves

    UT3 was garbage on my PS3, Mods or not. Why in the world would I want a mediocre game on my 360 when gears2 is right around the corner? plus keyboard and mouse are reserved for my PC, not my PS3, and yes K + M is much more responsive, but I don't even remember the last shooter besides Crysis that I actually played on my PC, I'm so used to the controllers anyway....

    If I was Epic I'd get back at that drawing board, UT3 needs some serious improvements. Gameplay-wise it's great but everything else, including map selection, needs a lot of work.

    Eh, 360 users haven't been missing much. I'll have traded my PS3 version in before they even get the 360 version. COD4 is still console shooter king.

    Infogrames and Atari never pushed them into dumbing down '99 or '04 (respectively).

    I knew it was a bad sign when I heard Midway was publishing it.
    Haven't played it yet, but I hope Midway didn't do too much damage.

    No all mods cant be used on ps3 there are lots of reasons for that.

    the big one... get ready It only has 512mb ram (so only about 256mb main system ram 256 for video stuff like textures) total and there are other limits the real PC version does not have. If you are making a large PC map or mod you can't fit it all and for get high res textures the ps3 does not have the hardware for it .

    they are only going to get bigger as PC maps expand since they got gobs of memeory and hardware and what guy with a PC to do the mods on would want to limit his creation to the PS3 when it could be done on a PC and he could use it with no restrictions? You can raise the hardware requirements of a game pretty easy with your mods by adding tons of stuff to make it cool, hardware requirements on the game box do not apply after you throw custom maps/mods into it.

    I would not I do not make anything with unreal editor with the Ps3 in mind why would i? maybe throw the ps3 people a bone and give the a character like people have been nothing big. You are only going to see a few maps/ mods for ps3 come out once and a while over the games entire life span since they will be making them on PC.

    What ever the xbox 360 and ps3 has is usless if you do not have RAM to put it in.. and the cpu and gpu in the consoles is nothing compared to PC hardware.

    Not all mods can be cooked for the PS3 version, I'm pretty sure that's why you only see a few character mods and maps.

    ya me and a friend had to replace our system 5 times,so ya there is no high fail rate it dosent eat discs or over heat.

    Try facing the fact that 30% is still 3 out of 10 and there are going to be acouple million people who get bad untis and bad refurbed units because MS dosent have to fix them because they can blindly rape the consumer through good marketing.

    I like the PC more and ti helps 90% of the 360 games go to PC, I am not saying the 360 is not a fair console but MS needs to fix it and make a universal HDD kit for ti already the crappy DRM/locks on the HDD is foolish when they are trying to sale content through XBL.

    You know what gives the PC and PS3 versions the edge here, though? User content. Any and all content made on the PC version can be ported to the PS3 version with minor hassle. The 360 doesn't support user content, only DLC you have to purchase, which in my book is a big negative.

    I've had mine since March 2005 and it hasn't broke once. 360 is a great system get over it. I like Wii and PS3 aswell, but I play 360 the most.

    the 360 is FPS central for consoles,its never to late to port a shooter to the 360.

    However..they should be able to to do mouse and KB support...then again MS built the 360 architecture on crack.....30% fail rates and all I would stick with the PC or PS3 versions of nearly any game just because the easy break oven is a nightmare.

    MS has the 360 to tightly locked up,lets hope their next console is just better put together....

    Well, we all knew this was coming. Besides, console wise, Unreal Tournament/Championship's audience is on the Xbox console. The first two games on the original Xbox sold quite well, with the first helping launch Xbox Live. People in shock about this truely should wake up, as there was no way Epic was not bringing this to Xbox 360. This will make 3 good games this coming summer I'll have to get. The other two being Saints Row 2, and GTA4
