COD4 hits 9M milestone

Activision and Infinity Ward's modern-day first-person shooter hits sales landmark; Variety Map Pack breaks XBLA record with 1M downloads in 9 days.

From the get-go, Activision's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was a certifiable hit. Its PC performance notwithstanding, the Infinity Ward-developed modern-warfare shooter debuted with more than 2 million units sold across the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in its first month last November. Though having been available for only two months, the title also managed to take the 2007 sales crown, with Activision saying in January that COD4 had sold 7 million units worldwide by year's end.

Proving to have legs beyond 2007, COD4 landed the top slot in the NPD Group's monthly sales dump for January and February, though it was ousted in March by Super Smash Bros. Brawl's staggering 2.7 million-unit debut. Even so, March's NPD report did signify a significant milestone for Activision and Infinity Ward. According to a post by Infinity Ward director of communications Robert Bowling on the game's official blog, COD4 has officially sold more than 9 million units worldwide since launch.

With the Call of Duty 4: Game of the Year Edition out two weeks ago, Bowling also noted that the Variety Map Pack has set an Xbox Live Marketplace record of logging more than 1 million downloads in its first nine days. The four-map pack came as a free download with COD4: GOTYE, and those who already owned the Xbox 360 version of the game could purchase the add-on over Xbox Live for 800 Microsoft points ($10). The Variety Map Pack will be available on the PlayStation Network next week.

Haven't played the Cod series since the first one, but picked up Cod 4 and it is great. Refreshing the series away from WWII.

To hear you lot peck at each other, you'd think you'd programmed COD4 and Halo 3 yourselves...

... but then, if you had done, you probably wouldn't be wasting your time cat-fighting on a message board about things that don't matter. You'd be going to work, or drinking beer, or getting laid, or doing some of the other things that grown-ups like to do. Which reminds me... I have to go.

I might add; if any of you engaged in this petty debate *are* adults, I am genuinely embarrassed for you. I mean, did no-one ever teach you how to disagree with someone politely...?

Call of Duty 4 can be beaten in as little as six hours and doesn't offer a lot of replay value. However, if you play Halo 3 on Legendary difficult, the game doesn't just get more difficult because the enemies are tougher, it gets looooonger, because of the incredible artificial intelligence of the enemies in the game. Plus, the replay value in Halo 3 is incredible, because of all the Skulls that need to be found and can change the gameplay.

    ___________________________________________

Well, Halo 3 can easily be beaten in 6 hours. COD4 gets significantly longer/tougher on Veteran, as with Halo 3 on Legendary... guess you missed both points there.

9 Skulls..... 30 computers with Intel... yea, there's no hidden items in COD.

Otherwise an ok arguement, but incorrect facts = failed. One last point, yea MS said Halo 3 had "sold" 8million units, when MS says something was "sold" they mean to a retailer, not necessarily that all of those copies have gone on from retail to consumer.

7 million COD4 sold however is referring to out the door sales.

Microsoft announced that Halo 3 had sold over 8 Million copies of Halo 3, very close to the time that Activision announced Call of Duty 4 had sold 7 Million copies.

No doubt about it, Halo 3 was the "Sales Champion" of 2007.

And the only thing in the world that is more important than "Sales" is "Money."

Halo 3 still holds the record in the Guiness Book of World Records for the most money generated in the videogame industry. No other game comes close.

In terms of which game is better, both Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 received virtually identical reviews, because there were so many scores of 10 out of 10, 9.75 out of 10, 9.5 out of 10, ect...

But one thing is clear, Halo 3 is a much broader game than Call of Duty 4.

Halo 3 includes a 4-player Co-Op mode, whereas Call of Duty 4 doesn't offer any form of Co-Op mode at all.

The Multi-player version of both Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 are incredible. This is the mode where the two games are most comparable in terms of quality. Halo 3 is the winner in the other two areas.

One thing is for sure, if Microsoft would have launched Halo 3 for the PC, or if Activision would have not released Call of Duty 4 for the PC, then Halo 3 sales would be very far ahead of the Call of Duty 4, even with COD4 still being released for the PS3.

It's pretty scary to think what the sales of Halo 3 would be like if Halo 3 would have been released for Xbox 360, PC, PS3, and Nintendo DS in the same way that Call of Duty 4 was.

Activision clearly supports the Xbox 360 more than the Playstation 3, though. Xbox 360 received the new maps three weeks before the Playstation 3. And the maps will cost $10 on both the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Increadibly deep?!?!?! COD4 is far from deep, great game, but far from deep. Try playing BF2142, now that game offers a challenge, and is much much deeper than this (try hitting 2 star Gen in less than 3 months.. practically impossible). COD4 is a great "pickup" game, kinda novice, but good.

I don'[t know why people call Call of Duty 4 the "Halo-Killer" they are two different kinds of shooters. Halo is a sci-fi shooter. While CoD 4 is a military shooter.

If miltary shooters are your genre thatn It just can't get much better than COD 4. The developers really got the single player and the mutliplayer right on this one.

If PS3 players are getting this map pack for free. xbox 360 users should get it free as well. But if they are making both parties pay for it, i don't mind paying for it.

    HLAM,

    Yeah, well said.

I think a lot of the users who bang-on about console owners having to pay for maps are children who can't buy *anything* because they've already blown their allowance on a "funny" T-shirt. Whereas those of us with incomes don't particularly mind spending 800MS Points every now and then. It's really not a lot of money... and as HLAM says, if you don't want to pay for it, give it a few months and it'll become free.

  • HungryLikeAMug

    Posted Apr 21, 2008 6:48 am GMT

To all hermits stating "haha you have to buy the maps!!!" - nobody cares
to all the console players complainging about paying for maps - if everyone just had the patience to wait and not pay for new maps, they would eventually come free. how can you fault devs for charging for maps when millions of idiots buy them everytime on day one??

    Raidis,

I've not played COD4, but I second what you say about trash-talk. It's depressing, and it completely destroys the fun that can be had from meeting new people online. When I play Halo 3, I now routinely mute everyone in the lobby, and I never play with a headset.

  • Gruug

    Posted Apr 21, 2008 12:16 am GMT

Let's see...you PAY for maps on the 360 but the PC mod community maps are free? Sure sounds like the PC version would be a better deal.

Tho I would love the new map pack, and am quite mad it has not been released to the only really loyal fans COD has ever had... my friends and I play new maps all the time on our server. There are a bunch of free user created maps out for the PC version (and several copies of the map pack maps in the works as mismajor said), and we just make our own... the non IW maps tend to be alot better anyway.

Besides the point tho, IW really needs to remember that the PC gamers are the only reason there is a COD franchise at all. In the end tho, it all comes down to the all mighty dollar... they are just thinking of a way to screw the PC gamers out of $10 (which none of us will pay, since we will have the maps for free anyway). They should just do the right thing, and release the maps for free to the PC community like they would have if there was no Xbox Live. It would be a good way to say that they still appreciate the PC community.

Run around, shoot someone, dodge enemy fire, repeat.....CoD4 and Halo 3 are big time fps whore games and I don't really see the appeal beyond the campaign other than run around and kill. If anything H3 is more fun with all the custom games and insane map variants. But when you get to the matchmaking, it's the same as every other shooter but with overshields. And what's with all this complaining that the extra maps are not free? People do have to take times out of their lives to create these new maps and have to be on a payroll ya know. Think you could at least help fund the developer's paychecks by buying their work?

  • mismajor99

    Posted Apr 20, 2008 5:16 pm GMT

don't worry fellow pc peeps, the maps are being replicated by modders, so we'll have our own soon. in the meantime, enjoy the 30+ maps out right now for free. Once again, the community is taking care of itself.

  • hiimfletcher

    Posted Apr 20, 2008 5:03 pm GMT

besides the fact that only 3 of the 4 maps (or so i've come to notice) are used in matchmaking, they are still great maps and they got me playing again

Unacceptable, I want free stuff! Still its not bad i suppose, beter value than Halo 3 map pack anyway. 3 maps, 2 of which are remakes from past titles, compared to four original maps for the same price. I may be tempted to get this, then again I may just wait until its free.

im glad the game sells well, they deserve it.. but 90 million for 4 maps.. that's a bit rediculous IMO. *woops, read it wrong thought it was 9 million map packs downloaded.
still $9 million is a lot for a few extra maps.

  • Komalis

9 million copies sold + an additional map pack for $10.

Potential $90 million extra. What company in their right mind would throw away 90 million bucks? Think people, think.
