Sony: PS3 Video DLC details 'soon,' in-game XMB in '08

SCEA SVP Peter Dille says more information about PlayStation Store's television and film content downloads is coming "very soon," promises in-game cross-media bar by year's end.

Earlier this week, Sony globally launched its remodeled PlayStation Store, the PlayStation 3's answer to Xbox Live Marketplace and the Wii Shop Channel. Like its competitors, the new version of the online downloadable content vendor will be based on an in-console application, versus the slower-loading Web-browser storefront it used before. However, European Sony reps have admitted that some users were having problems with slow-loading icons in the store--a problem the company assured would soon pass.

Meanwhile, over in the US, Sony Computer Entertainment America has dropped some hints about what further updates to the PS3's store will bring. In a post on the official PlayStation blog, SCEA senior vice president of marketing and PlayStation Network Peter Dille (pictured) promised that long-standing requests by PS3 owners for a downloadable catalog of Sony Pictures Entertainment's films and television shows were not going unheeded.

"It's already been confirmed that we'll be offering a video service for PS3 in a way that separates the service from others you've seen or used," wrote Dille. "Ultimately, the goal of the PlayStation Network service will be to break through the overwhelming clutter of digital media to give you the TV, movies and gaming content you want. More on this very soon...."

Dille also had some welcome news for those who use their PS3s strictly for gaming. The executive promised that the company was working on a way to let players use the console cross media bar (XMB) while still playing a game. "We know you want in-game access to XMB features and we're committed to bringing that, among other community-related services, this year," he pledged. (Emphasis added.)

Wii uses a miniature version of Opera. So why **** about PS3 using a web browser when you can't tell?

This multitasking XMB will probably suck so much power from the ongoing game the devs will opt the function out of their games.... that's regularly what happens when you throw things into an architecture not being planned for in the first place! lol.

I just bought a PS3 after having owning a 360 for years. The online store is nice, but there needs to be more content. I've been downloading the latest blockbusters from XBL in high def for years now. The only thing that really impresses me about the PS3 besides games like Uncharted and Folklore and some others is the dvd playback. It's by far the best dvd player I've owned - for both regular and Blu-Ray movies. Everything else about the PS3 seems out of date and so 90ish - particularly the text-based operating system interface. Sony really needs to get their act together and get to work if they want to catch up with Microsoft and the big boys!

Im kind of surprise that the sony is taking soooo long with there downloadable movie service. Didn't they talk about that when the PS3 was getting set for launch?? Seems like its taking longer then it should.

Finally I can read mesages without leaving the game that was a big let down for me on the online service. Also id like to see HOME being released soon, that would be kewl. And maybe make the voice chat better sometimes i can hardly hear the person whos talking to me. But one step at a time. "\(*-*)/"

I always wanted to be able to play my music while playing a game without having to turn down the volume on the tv and listen to my MP3. I hope Sony will deliver on that, but I know Playstation Home will be a definite success. Sony has been around a long time and has always profited well. It will just take some time and patience to see their success unfold.

Does this mean I could listen to TOOL while playing Killzone 2? I think that would cause me to gasm so much I would die! ...I mean sure I could just get a CD player and play TOOL on that while I played KZ2, but this way I don't have to move lol!

Not too big into XMB. Though if it is between having it at launch or improving the hardware so less than 30-40% fail. I think Sony made the right choice.

Let's hope we get the in game XMB with Home when the open beta hits (hopefully) this quarter, and the "final version" comes out during Q3. Glad to hear more and more good news from the Sony camp. The game a promise with the PS Store, and they kept their promise, and exceeded my expectations. I expect nothing less from Home and the in-game XMB.

I'm on my 4th 360, it's annoying, But the 360 is a good console software wise. Thankfully my PS3 hasnt had any issues. Truthfully i'd rather get rid of the 360.

I dont get the hubris over the in-game XMB rollout. I don't see why i'd want it. What's a good use of it?

I got mine back in 4 days and it was free. Sony took almost 2 months and then they charged me $150. MS recognized the problem and dealt with it really well.

In-game XMB is the most requested feature and one that XBL users bash PS3 users about all the time. Give 'em Home, give 'em in-game XMB and they will be very happy. Well, at least they will complain about different stuff.

It would be nice if they could do in-game XMB for the PSP too.

I need the XMB so it will easier to send friends invites while playing instead of stopping what your playing just to try and link up with a buddy 2 play in a game 2gether. They need to get those PS store NW cards so i dont have to risk my bank account so i can buy my Warhawk updates!!!!

Give me XMB now. Its been almost two years(3 if you count that the 360 had ingame communication when it launched) and this supposedly more 'superior' console still doesnt have a simple function we need.
