Sony: PS3 Video DLC details 'soon,' in-game XMB in '08
SCEA SVP Peter Dille says more information about PlayStation Store's television and film content downloads is coming "very soon," promises in-game cross-media bar by year's end.
Earlier this week, Sony globally launched its remodeled PlayStation Store, the PlayStation 3's answer to Xbox Live Marketplace and the Wii Shop Channel. Like its competitors, the new version of the online downloadable content vendor will be based on an in-console application, versus the slower-loading Web-browser storefront it used before. However, European Sony reps have admitted that some users were having problems with slow-loading icons in the store--a problem the company assured would soon pass.
Meanwhile, over in the US, Sony Computer Entertainment America has dropped some hints about what further updates to the PS3's store will bring. In a post on the official PlayStation blog, SCEA senior vice president of marketing and PlayStation Network Peter Dille (pictured) promised that long-standing requests by PS3 owners for a downloadable catalog of Sony Pictures Entertainment's films and television shows were not going unheeded.
"It's already been confirmed that we'll be offering a video service for PS3 in a way that separates the service from others you've seen or used," wrote Dille. "Ultimately, the goal of the PlayStation Network service will be to break through the overwhelming clutter of digital media to give you the TV, movies and gaming content you want. More on this very soon...."
Dille also had some welcome news for those who use their PS3s strictly for gaming. The executive promised that the company was working on a way to let players use the console cross media bar (XMB) while still playing a game. "We know you want in-game access to XMB features and we're committed to bringing that, among other community-related services, this year," he pledged. (Emphasis added.)
