New Mortal Kombat details inKoming

Midway to announce the next installment in fatality-famous fighting series later today, game confirmed to be built using Unreal Engine 3.

The Earth realm has been a pretty quiet place since 2006's Mortal Kombat: Armageddon pummeled PlayStation 2 and Xbox owners into submission with more than 60 playable characters--and even a kart-racing minigame. A handful of ports in the series have surfaced since, but fans have had to go without an all-new installment for nearly two years.

Now, the evil forces of the Outworld appear ready for another round. Later today, Midway Games will officially unveil the Mortal Kombat game at its Gamers' Day event in Las Vegas. Presumably, the title in question is the next-generation installment of its famously gory fighting franchise that the company announced last October.

Since then, Midway has been mostly mum on the next Mortal Kombat, but the publisher has confirmed for GameSpot that it is being built on a "highly modified" version of Unreal Engine 3. The Chicago-based company has made much use of Epic Games' oft-licensed engine, featuring it in games like Stranglehold, Area 51: Blacksite, Hour of Victory, and Unreal Tournament 3.

[UPDATE] Midway has pulled back the curtain on the game and revealed it to be Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. The comic-book-crossover game will feature characters like Sub-Zero and Scorpion brawling with Superman, Batman, and more as their two worlds overlap in a cosmic incident. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's first preview.

I have found MK too be pretty lame most of the time, and a bit over the top.
And I know its supposed to be over the top, but its a big cheese fest lol.
However, I think this would be more interesting if it was aloud to be rated M, and then you'd have batman spewing guts over Raiden's hat :L lol.

I agree with w0olfie. No fatalities = no buying for me. Why couldny they just take the last game with all the 60 characters and give them two independent fatalities and one animality. That to me would the best mortal kombat game ever.

I was excited until the person said in the interview that there weren't gonna be fatalities. How can you have a MK game without fatalities? that's just dumb.

"another one it has to have more blood if it wants to be succesful"

I disagree. Mortal Kombat has relied on that gimmick for too long and went downhill. A bigger reason why Mortal Kombat is having a hard time competing is the fighting engine of the recent games were not as polished as its competitors. Blood and gore isn't enough, it needs a better though-out game mechanics if the series want to suceed.

Kotaku is reporting that this game will have no fatalities, and little-no blood! Midway just lost like 90% of it's fan base right there.

@ bertm1975. That or we get to see Superman rip out people's spines. Yeah, I'm betting we'll lose the gore and fatalities.

Fighting games have never been the same since the 2d days. I miss Killler Instinct Gold... what made that game better than MK IMO was the speed of the fighting and the huge combos.

this game will use the Unreal Engine life Gears of War

MK vs DC has been a rumor for awhile and now www.TRMK.com was at the conference yesterday and confirmed that this game is MK vs DC

Mortal Kombat vs DC Comics....where the heck did that come from? So far this an official title, with a few Mortal Kombat sites posting a Sub-Zero vs. Batman picture. Now I haven't really seen any official statement from Midway if this is Mortal Kombat 8 or another version for like the Wii. If this is the official MK 8 I am seriously disappointed in both Midway and Warner Bros., the owner of DC Comics. DC characters are geared towards young kids, since their cartoons are all over the place and the action figures are there for kids. MK has always been more for adults, and mixing the 2 either means this is a joke or MK is about to lose the violence and gore.

Couldn't Midway take the hint with the poor sales of MK Armageddon? The series really needs a break for awhile. The combat engine they've used with the past 3 games is horrible.

sorry, truestrose, but street fighter has the 2d-ish next-gen fighting racket on lock.. also, the realms are FICTIONAL, so whatever midway wants to do to explain that away is just fine as long as still-beating hearts are ripped out of chest cavities. as for the dc comics rumor, i don't know if dc would allow it's most powerful heroes to be mutilated beyond recognition, but then again, marvel had it's heroes eating each other, so anything's possible. it does seem a little "marvel nemesis-ish," though

Mortal kombat was meant to be over, no more fights among the realms. Each finally secure as kingdoms and cities are rebuilt... what the hell could have happened to stop this?

    Money.

Go back to 2D and i might decide to start playing it again...

  • AzureLivesOn

    Posted Apr 17, 2008 10:39 pm PT

Wait, so let me get this straight.

We create an entry in the franchise which had a storyline basically surrounding the fact that there's been so many Mortal Kombats, the very fabric of our worlds was ripping apart. So they created a final tournament, with one official winner. End of story. Period. But we're going to make another one....

....WTF. Honestly. Adding the Unreal Engine 3 is meaningless at this point (Brawl used the Havok engine for god's sake, so anything is believable). Let. It. Die.

If this is really true, http://www.trmk.org/ it looks like Mortal Kombat goes head to head with... DC Comics :S
If this is true they can Take al the freaking Mortal Kombats and put them down there asses!!!! damn it..

its not the unreal engines fault for a game sucking. the developer has to be good at making games too, not just using an engine.

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks was such an awesome game. Why can't they make a 360 sequel?

    Posted Apr 17, 2008 9:08 pm PT

If you didn't know, lots of company's used the unreal 2 engine and unreal 1 engine. It can be modified to have a different look to it but if you look at it. Dark sector looks different from rainbow 6, lost odyssey and so on. It's ton's of games out already using the unreal 3 engine just like unreal 2 so it's not going to ever be obsolete, if so it would of been years ago in the forms of the other ones that nobody ever got tired of. Rainbow 6 : Raven shield, Splinter cell etc....

yeah Epic is saturating the market with the unreal engine and its going to be obsolete or bland if everyone starts using it

  • ocdog45

damm. everything is going to be on the unreal engine. there needs to be a higher standard. might as well put fenix in the game.
