Source: World of Warcraft fan site WOW Insider.

What we heard: In 2006, Blizzard Entertainment made the somewhat audacious statement that the developer was targeting annual expansions for its massively popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft. The news was smirk-inducing, considering it came nearly a year after the game's first expansion--The Burning Crusade--was announced and just a few weeks after the add-on had just entered alpha testing. However, thanks in large part to ample and substantive in-game content updates, Blizzard has had no problem growing its rabid fan base past 10 million subscribers.

Needless to say, WOW's second expansion--Wrath of the Lich King--breezed through The Burning Crusade's one-year anniversary in January on a wind as frigid as the add-on's fictional locale, Northrend. However, as the summer approaches, Lich King may be ready to emerge from Blizzard's cooker. Enthusiast fan site WOW Insider reports today that "anonymous sources" claim the game has entered alpha, and "various players are being invited to check it out, under a strict [non-disclosure agreement]."

According to WOW Insider, "Wrath's content is in a playable and mostly completed form--quests, game mechanics, and items are in, even if specific flavor text, names, and even textures are not." Considering WOW Insiders status with the game's community, it stands to reason that its sources would be the alleged "various players," who are apparently unfazed with breaking Blizzard's NDA.

As Wrath of the Lich King was first unveiled during BlizzCon in August 2007, the timing is well past ripe for it to be moving into a playable state. Blizzard, though, is notorious for taking its sweet time getting a game to retail: Assuming the development team began work on Wrath of the Lich King immediately after shipping Burning Crusade, it has already been nearly 15 months in development. (Though, in fairness, the impending $19 billion Vivendi-Activision merger could present a minor distraction for the soon-to-be-consumed developer-publisher.)

Blizzard itself has begun to drop hints that Wrath of the Lich King may be on the verge of public consumption. In announcing its first-ever Worldwide Invitational in Europe last month, the developer proclaimed that attendees would find a beta key for "an upcoming Blizzard Entertainment game" in their swag bags. The Lich King seems to be the most likely candidate for this tester pass, considering Starcraft II was still in a highly malleable state when GameSpot last saw the game in March and the still-unconfirmed Diablo III remains a mere blip on the radar.

Retailers also appear to gearing up for Wrath of the Lich King's launch. The online databases for retailers GameStop and Best Buy reflect a tenuous November 3 release date for the expansion, while Amazon anticipates the game will ship November 30. Retailers are often privilege to unannounced release date information, and have on more than a few occasions given gamers an early heads-up on when they can rip the shrink wrap from their new game.

The official story: Unfortunately, an update on Lich King's status was a no go. "We haven't made any recent announcements regarding what development stage Wrath of the Lich King is in," said a Blizzard representative. "We're hard at work on the game and are looking forward to releasing more information to the community in the future, but we don't have any further news to share at the moment. As for the release date, no date has been announced yet, but we'll keep you updated when we have new information."

Bogus or not bogus?: Tentatively not bogus for both counts.

I think it'll be out by Xmas. The late Nov date could be accurate. Something tells me the new bigwigs after this merger will want it out in time for the Xmas rush this time around.

Just sit back and enjoy the Shattered Sun Offensive. Or go back to Azeroth and go through the low level dungeons on Heroic level. It'll get here when it gets here.

If they released the game this year they would be rushing the current content in the game. Not everyone will get a chance to experience all oft he BC, especially the new Sunwell raid before November and the the BC raids will die out just like the old raids before BC came out. It would be smart for Blizzard to release the game next year so that a majority of people can experience everything the game has to offer.

If Blizzard wants to be smart and make a HUGE financial investment...well releasing two weeks prior to Christmas this year would do just that. But then again...it's not like they need the money...(10,000,000 x 15 (p/month)...yeah, only 150,000,000 dollars a month.

WoW is a great game but the problem is you spend all this time trying to get epic gear etc. and then new expansions come out and those epics get replaced by next lvl greens in the next area. You can sometimes spend to much time playing and dont try all the other new great games that are out. It's a good game but you need alot of time to get the maxmium lvl (which would be 70 atm) and to get all the good gear.

Well, WoW will get boring if you play for the sake of the game itself and just try to beat everyone. I have been playing since release and never got bored because of great friends I have made while playing. Although I have been on so long, my only characters of note are a 70 rogue and 30 priest, I dont focus on grinding and such just to level and get to the top. Have a little fun while you play, thats the point of the game.

Quit WOW again today, wanna stop for a long time, I dunno, you either play WOW a lot and get somewhere, or you play WOW on and off and get nowhere, after 3 lvl 70's I dont see the point in it anymore. So bad grinding it gets boring as hell, and most of the players act crazy anyway taking it way to serious. Dunno, doubt I will be back for the expansion.

I really like WOW, though I am slow in leveling so Im not in a rush for the expansion. I am, however, very excited to see a return to Azeroth and the more classic/gothic fantasy style of old WOW. Burning Crusade is great, but I've been away from Azeroth for far too long!

Well if nothing else, Blizzard's programming skill has without doubt increased with every new patch they add. You have to admit, escort quests are soooo much nicer now.
So I can't see WotLK to be a disappointer, especially with the time their taking to perfect it. I would rather wait some odd months longer to play a game the developers are happy with, then one now that always seems to be missing something. I see the game out this year, tho that's nothing to get exited about being we're only 4 months into this year... /sigh

I find it amusing how there are so many Blizzard haters nowadays, when most of you played WoW and other Blizzard games till your eyes bleed. I don't care what many whinners say; WoW is a great game, that is very fun indeed. The only thing I dont do is to play it 14 hours a day, every day, until I get sick of it and start complain about everything Blizzard does. Face it guys, Blizzard's game's quality is very good. They are one of the best developers atm, because we never see an "average" game coming out of their development. The way I see it, Blizzard has grown so much hate because it grew up to be one of the biggest devs on this industry. And all that's big atracts envy... (Ex.: M$).

    WoW FTW! (And Alliance FTW!!!!!)

@Warchief_Zuljin: Burning Crusade was NOT terrible. What a stupid thing to say. From your name, one can assume you like WoW. If that is the case, I can't imagine why you wouldn't like TBC. In many respects, it's just more of the same, which you apparenlty liked the first time around so why wouldn't you like it in new regions? But they also greatly improved the questing with many more interesting quest types. Some of the new areas are also quite stunning, like Zangarmarsh and Nagrand. Clearly you're just trying to stir the pot here and can't be taken seriously.

Sounds like some people don't know Blizzard too well. It will be out this year. They've never had an expansion beta last more than 6 months. It will be out in November, just watch.

Burning Crusade was terrible, and I'm glad it's going back to zombies and the other undead monsters.

Im enjoying wow, i've been playing for 2 years on and off now, it's like social networking combined with the thrilling storylines of which are continuations from Warcraft 2, 3, and beyond... great work so far, and personally i see no end in sight.... i'm looking forward to the next expansion, and i cant wait for future support of this game to be made available.... i mean, there are so many conflicts to resume and gain an understanding of... from Argus, to the Naaru... Who are the nightmare, and the ongoing conflict between horde and alliance... weather in world of warcraft, it's sequels, or spinoff games... i can not wait.

"Capcom, with Blizzard Entertainment.... Warcraft: The Culling of Stratholme" - there is an idea... Arthas in Devil May Cry style action.... yeah

I`ve got a few things after reading the article and some of the other comments But I`ll start with the article... It sounds like this WOW insider (or whatever it is) Is nearly as conected as their sayin the there might be a chance that it could be out this year, but lets not get too opptamistic now.. Moving on now, if your gonna crack on WoW in any way shape or form then go to a site that supports that kinda thing cause I dont care who you are WoW is better then any of the other MMOs that you are gonna find ANYWHERE ANYTIME EVER Now i feel better.... ;p

$15 / month and $60 expansions every couple years...glad I kicked the habit when I did because that's over $200 a year to play a game (forget the time involved).

Still WoW is a great casual game...endgame stinks so I'll buy 4 other games a year instead.

With no new content being added until the expansion, I expect a surprisingly early release, maybe late summer-early fall. Seeing as how guilds are already plowing through the 2.4 content (guilds are already knocking out the new instances) a release this year seems a given. The Isle of Quel'danas is neat and all, but its not a whole lot of new content once the phases are all completed. Then its just dailies and 2 instances.

Unless you are a raider and you have the time to take advantage of 25 mans there really is not THAT much content in TBC. Most of the content is absorbed and either done or ignored on the trip to 70 which only take about 2 weeks. At this point if you dont raid the only thing you can do is grind either repetitive dungeons or repetitive pvp for gear. Over 2 years since release and this was all that was in TBC? I expect the same from WotLK. There will be new stuff, you'll roll a DK and have fun for a few weeks getting to 80 and then be right back where you are right now.....doing the same thing over and over while raiders get to kill lore figures and major story points.

I used to care but ill be well into either Age of Conan or Warhammer online by the time this comes out. Bored with WoW and WotLK is just going to be another giant grind fest with very few new ideas or boss fights and the same old "go here pick up that", "kill 10 of them" quests. Been there done that, time for something new and interesting.

That's been bugging me from day one. The game didn't even look all that impressive when it came out. The least they could do is offer some options for some of us to turn on/off higher polygons or better textures.
