EA boxes up SimCity quintet

New SimCity Box collection will feature five recent installments in the groundbreaking series for $39.99 this June, including SimCity 4 and SimCity Societies.

Electronic Arts loves compilations. Besides distributing Valve's current best-seller The Orange Box, the publisher has released a series of compilations of its classic series. These include Command & Conquer: The First Decade and a variety of Sims compilations, such as The Sims: The Complete Collection.

Today, the Redwood City, California-based publisher bundled up another of its series. The SimCity Box collection will compile five PC entries into the Will Wright-created series--which has sold more than 17 million units worldwide since launching in 1989--into a single affordable package.

Included in the bundle are the classic SimCity 4 (2003), its expansion SimCity 4 Rush Hour (2004), the lukewarmly reviewed SimCity Societies (2007), its forthcoming SimCity Societies: Destinations expansion pack (May 2008), and the recently released The Sims Carnival: SnapCity (January 2008).

Set for a release sometime in June, The SimCity Box will retail for $39.99 and is only available for the PC. In the announcement, EA touted the fact that were someone to buy the games individually, the combined price would be more than $100.

How about a Mac version that works with the new intel macs? On the Mac OS so we don't have to be using crap windows to play it?

where are the classic Simcity games? Simcity 4 is good, but I'd like to have the older ones too as they had some slightly different options and play styles.

Everyone thank Valve for showing EA the light. Sometimes the way to make money is make the game worth the money you ask for it. The Sims is a good game by itself but a must own bundled in a box.

I think this pack is great because it includes really great games for a sim-fan at a great price. I can see how they are trying to get Sim Societies out there and sold. I'm glad I didn't buy it yet, though, or I'd probably be infuriated!

"I don't hate EA, to be honest I enjoy many of the games by them or one of there MANY sub-developers such as Valve"

@ Lord-Viru
For the love of... EA does NOT own Valve! Let me repeat that.. they do NOT own Valve! They only distribute the hardcopies (they don't own steam either) of their games, they have no say in what Valve does whatsoever.

As for this bundle, it's not worth your money. I got Sim City 4/Rush Hour for 20 bucks and it was worth it. For this bundle you're paying an extra 20 bucks for 3 crap games that you'll probably never play. If they really wanted to make a good bundle, they should've done something like the C&C First Decade bundle, with all the games Sim City games BEFORE Societies.

@ prioritymail: If you really wanna try Sim City, just look for Sim City 4 (or anything before really) by itself. You'll save money and be happy with your purchase.

Wow. It's such an insult to package the magnificent game that is SimCity 4 with the atrocious SimCity Societies and even worse to package it with The Sims Carnival: CrapCity.

The crappy spinoffs are really bad for the series. What was that? Rod Humble is doing a good job with the series now is he? Hmm.... Giving the SimCity series to Tilted Mill was the worst decision The Sims Division has ever made.

Then again, they're only doing this so they can palm off their unsold horde of SCS and SCCC alongside a great game. It's a con basically and by no means the definitive SimCity compilation.

I remember for the original Sims EA made MULTIPLE package deals. I went to Walmart once and there were 3 different options for a package of various The Sims games. Now THAT is ridiculous. Hopefully EA is not going to try that again.

it is just another way for EA to milk money out of their products when people would normally never buy them. It isn't a bad idea, but I say offer the games at a lower price to begin with, or release these things earlier. Maybe you will get more than 10% of the gamer population to actually like EA if they were nice to us for a change instead of only thinking about how to max. their profits. Yeah, it is a business, but it isn't one that cares about their customers, only money.

EA always puts out boxed sets, which is nice of them I suppose. They recently put out a Sims 2 compilation, which may mean that the Sims 2 is finally coming to a close with it's expansions.

I don't hate EA, to be honest I enjoy many of the games by them or one of there MANY sub-developers such as Valve or Mythic, but I just think that the way they go about their business is wrong, for example trying to take over Take 2 just solely to bank in on GTA 4 or the next Bioshock

I would have to agree with others... If this were a true compilation of the 'SimCity' series, where is the original SimCity, SimCity2000 and SimCity 3? I mean, that would make more sense if you ask me. My guess is the other titles here aren't selling well, so they want to package them together to get them to sell. I don't hate EA, but they do seem to scramble for a buck more than put out good titles.

All bad games except for Sim City 4. Much rather have had the games running up to Sim City 4 instead of these crappy ones. What can you expect from EA though?

Sim City 4 was the last great Sim City game, far superior to Societies but it also fell far short of what it could have been. If it wasn't for one amazing site Simtropolis and all the incredible mods they produced, the game would have been a big let down.

That's a great deal and all, but I'd almost rather have a collection of different sims. 4 is a great game too. But it has pretty high requirements.

I'm an EA basher because they are about filling their pockets and have lost the sight of the gamers (if they've ever had it), but... I have to remember that EA is a conglomerate making money while spending less is what a successful business is about. I don't like EA but I now have a better understanding of what they are about. I just won't buy their games.

Oh, quit whining Nintendo_Boy. If this was called SimCity Societies Gold, with just the original and the expansion pack, it would still be a good deal for those interested.

So releasing Rock Band for 2 and half times the price than the US in PAL regions and also delaying it, is turning a new leaf? This package is a joke, only Sim City 4 and the expansion is worth playing and you can them together for much less.

It kills me that people take every chance they get to bash EA but when you look at the big picture EA really does put out some really good deals that are pretty beneficial to gamers, especially those who may be new to a particular franchise or genre.
