Final Fantasy IV set for DS remake

Square Enix confirms July 22 North American launch for the game originally released on the Super Nintendo as Final Fantasy II.

Final Fantasy faithful have been waiting on an oft-rumored remake of the landmark seventh installment in the series for years. Although Square Enix hasn't seen fit to even announce such a project, it has kept up a steady stream of Final Fantasy spin-offs and remakes to keep fans busy in the meantime.

Today the publisher confirmed the North American release of the latest such remake, Final Fantasy IV for the Nintendo DS. Set to arrive on retailers' shelves on July 22, the game will feature 3D graphics, CG cutscenes with voice-overs, a remixed score by series composer Nobuo Uematsu, touch-screen support, and a multiplayer head-to-head battle mode.

A Super Nintendo version of Final Fantasy IV was originally released in North America in 1991. However, because only one of the first three games had been localized, it was dubbed Final Fantasy II upon arrival.

Final Fantasy IV is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older and will sell for $39.99.

    I'm really looking forward to playing this (I'm a big FF fan), I played FFIV on the gba version and its one of my favorite original FF titles (my favorite from FF titles 1-6), I hope this game brings forth the wonderful gameplay it has to offer along with new graphics and re-mastered music (or re-mixed) from the original soundtrack, looking forward to it!!

    People want FFVII cuz it's so rare. I 100% agree with Renzoku. I want to see the re-make of FFVI cuz, in my opinion at least, it's the best one.

    Ummm dude sony dosent own any FF game Square enix owns Them all. Just because it was excusive to the PS dosent mean FF7 culdnt be put on ds. But to be honest i would much prefer to see it hit the ps3 then the DS.

    They are gonna tease us through FFV and VI then wait a few years then bring out VII.

    Even if its just a port to DS I don't care. I want it so bad, I would give both my ankle bones to have it!

    I remember SquareEnix saying that they would never remake FF7 because it "wouldn't be profitable". That's bull. There are millions of FF7 fans, the sales would be incredible. Oh and I loved the FF3 remake so i'm looking forward to this one (FF4 remake) also. Just please dont do that thing where you need to exchange messages with other users to unlock new missions and stuff again. I don't know anyone else with a DS, let alone the game!

    Outstanding news! I have finished both the GBA version as well as the Japanese version of FF IV DS--but that will not stop me from playing through this version as well. FF IV is, by far, one of Square's greatest accomplishments and this version should introduce a new generation to one of the greatest RPGs ever made. Let's hope that Square keeps the remakes coming!!!!!!

    I have a whole bucket of SNES nostalga for FFIV (USA FFII).

    When this game was new, I had a friend who described FFIV as having "a bigger plot twist than The Crying Game." I still laugh myself silly when I remember that.

    This is the very first CRPG the USA got that had a cinematic story and memorable characters (Phantasy Star II was close but not quite). It was also the first CRPG in the USA that did not require any grinding whatsoever to finish. In other words, this game really revolutionized it all for us stateside.

    are you listening squeenix: thanks for ff3 ... thanks for ff4 (when it releases) ... remake the rest of the ff series on DS ... release the rest of the front mission series ... WE WANT CHRONO TRIGGER and CHRONO CROSS on DS or an updated version on the PS3 ... WE WANT VAGRANT STORY!!! ... and just for a little non-RPG game ... WE WANT EINHANDER!

    This game has been out for 4 months in Japan. I am glad that it is going to be released in the US. FF4 was the game that started my RPG craze.

    Cool, I've never had the chance to play this one. Awesome that I'll finally get to. I love that Square Enix is rereleasing all the old ones again for new systems. FF will live forever and are so well done that they still hold up after all this time. Too bad it wasn't put out on PSP. Guess I'll have to blow the dust of my DS, I knew there was a reason I bought it ,,, I guess this is it. Now if they would just get around to a rerelease of FF7...

    I heard about this ages ago. But didn't know anything of it until now. Final Fantasy is in a different league altogether in gaming. Not necessarily a better one though. Can't wait for this ... but when is the UK release date? 3D graphics (like FFIII), CG cutscenes (like FFIII) ... but voice-overs, Nobuo Uematsu, and multiplayer! This game will be insane!

    Along the Guitar Hero: On Tour, and now FFIV, the future (this summer) looks bright.

    The Japanese version of this game is incredibly good. So good that I stopped playing the Japanese version; I'm going to wait for the English version to come out to really enjoy it.
