Alone in the Dark release date shifts

Move back to June to let Eden Studios push for an "even higher standard."

It looks as if gamers awaiting the granddaddy of survival horror may be biting their nails for a little while longer. Alone in the Dark's next-generation rebirth, announced in 2005 and delayed several times since--it was described as "probably the hit of our next year" by previous Atari CEO Bruno Bonnell in an earnings call in 2006--will be coming out a month later than previously scheduled.

Atari, owned by French publisher Infogrames, has today confirmed that Alone in the Dark's release date is moving back a month. The Xbox 360 and PC versions that are being developed by Eden Games, as well as Hydravision's PlayStation 2 and Wii versions, will be available in the EU and PAL territories on June 20, and in the US on June 24. The PlayStation 3 version, also being developed by Eden, does not currently have a confirmed release date.

Lee Kirton, Atari's head of UK PR, told GameSpot, "The game has been postponed from May to allow the development team at Eden Games to polish the game to an even higher standard and deliver the best possible experience to gamers with this remarkable product."

Alone in the Dark reboots the series that essentially created the survival-horror genre as we know it today, bringing MacGyver-esque problem-solving to gamers in what is now being billed as a survival-action game. The game is set in, around, and under New York's Central Park, with the city under attack from a strange, malevolent being as the protagonist struggles to stay alive and work out exactly what is going on. I have really high hopes for 'Alone in the Dark'. I wasn't too bothered at first but when I saw the footage on the 'On The Spot' show I was severely impressed! I only on a Wii so I'm glad they'll be releasing it on there, although the graphics aren't too spectacular I bet the game will be awesome either way.

Watching the video of gameplay tech demo, it looks really interesting BUT, I think the game will ultimately fail because it will either be really repetitive or youll just run past stuff rather than mess on. For instance in the tech demo theres a lot of messing about throwing flares on rats, then trails, then firing them up, once you have done this once I imagine just running past will be done, if they dont make the features essential they wont be used.

Also the enemies should be kept realistic, or at least some sort of realism like res evil (lol its not real at all is it res evil? Well lets just say the rat creatures in this look poor)

This game is awesome looking!! All the different weapon combos and the graphics...this is Atari... Maybe they can still do it if they put their mind to it.

I hope they won't follow Valve example (HL2 eps2 is suppose to come out 6 month after HL2 eps1) and release the subsequent episode on time like Telltale Games game Sam & Max (that's how you're suppose to do an episodic game).

Sounds more like "it's been postponed to May because we don't want to be eaten alive by the mammoth that is Grand Theft Auto IV. And maybe the game actually needs a bit more polish...

This game looks pretty solid. At least Atari isn't rushing it out to try and save its stocks. I also liked the Dreamcast version. It couldn't touch Resident Evil Code Veronica, but it was still fun. Maybe this will help Atari get out of the Red and get their stocks above the price of a Mcdonalds double cheeseburger.

nutskullant yeah i agree gta IV would well overshadow this game which would be a big shame so i think it's good to put it back a month (Y)
    ---------------------------------------------------
Hell, that could actually be part of the reason for the delay heh, I mean what could they really do in a months time besides work on the final packaging and shipping procedures?

This delay is probably not to fix or improve anything substantial.

this game looks interesting, I'm glad they're showing lots of video of what to expect from this game, I just hope it's as fun as it looks, Alone in the Dark (the original one) was my introduction to the survival horror genre, I'm glad to see the name is still alive, even after that terrible Uwe Boll film

Some high profile delays in the last year have slowly been highlighting the need for fans to remain patient while developers iron out the bugs. Army of Two undoubtedly benefited from a few extra months. While I hope the extra time lends some extra polish to this title, I have to say I am not expecting much from this game. The previews have shown that there are some good ideas here, but most previewers are saying the underlying tech of this game needs a good deal of work...I guess we'll find out a month later.

I have high hopes for this game, truly looks 1 of a kind, old school Resident Evil for the new millenia. As for MGS4, I think peple are just gonna cream themselves as soon as they break the seal, it looks good but I think people are getting way in over their head. Lets pull it back a little.

its gonna be great, Atari is reshifting their company, and with the commitment to quality, the former guy from sony taking over atari, and this AAA title, it could really turn the tide. Survival Horror is the best genre and alone in the dark needs to reclaim its throne.

June are they kidding?? they are gonna have some serious competition on their hands.
The only game i will be buying in June is MGS4.
How are they supposed to compete with that.

I'll take Eden's 360 or PC version with crisp textures, HD resolutions and 5.1 sound. I wouldn't want to play an uglier reduced version of a next-gen survival horror on Wii, or the mutant stepchild on PS2. And as far as Wii controls, take a look at Hydravision's Obscure: The Aftermath for a clue as to how they'll handle the Wii port's motion control system. Ups and downs.

This game looks really cool. Original and inventive...but now that they delayed it until mid June, I will have no idea how it is because I will be WAYYYYY too busy with MGS4! Ha, that is for sure.

I'm dying for a good Survival-Horror game, and with physics like these, this should be amazing.

Sucks there's no release date for the PS3 version though.

Hope it does live up to the hype they are giving it, and by that I mean all versions, not just 360 and PS3, I'll get this on Wii if they make the motion controls work well.

I hope for the series, I hope for the game, I hope for Atari, I hope for the gamers, and I hope for myself that this game ends up being good...

The series, though much loved, hasn’t ever really lived up to the standard of the first one so its mostly hopes and prayers at this point...

  • Hvac0120

    Posted Apr 3, 2008 9:01 am PT

It sounds to me that Eden began development on the Xbox360. Why? Because they don't have a release date for the Ps3 set in stone. It is a known fact that it is more difficult to port to PS3 from 360 development, then the other way around. For this reason, the PS3 version will either be the lesser version of the game or it will be canned all-together due to the de-listing move being made. Hopefully the Wii and PS2 versions aren't complete crap too. I have heard that the 360 version has been demoed and was looking good. I have not had personal time with that demo or seen a demo myself, so that's all hear-say.

I can deal with that, one month is okay. At least we are gonna be able to rock this game this summer, this summer is gonna blow away last summer, that's for sure.
