Paramount to become publisher

The movie studio is putting together a variety of games based on its films, has expanded interactive team.

Paramount has become the latest studio to muscle in on the games industry, following on from fellow Viacom-owned Nickelodeon's recent announcement that it would be launching an additional 1,600 (mainly casual) Web-browser-based games.

According to a report in Variety magazine, Paramount is looking to invest in all types of games, although it is particularly interested in the casual, handheld, and mobile markets.

The company will start publishing titles before the end of the year, according to Sandi Isaacs, Paramount's senior vice president of interactive and mobile. She said, "There's going to be a slate where in some cases we're publishing, in some cases we're copublishing, or in others we're funding development and another publisher buys it. It's important for us to have a flexible model."

Paramount has expanded its interactive department in anticipation of the move, with Matt Candler to become vice president of interactive development, and Luke Letizia executive director of interactive licensing. Candler will liaison relationships with developers, and has previously worked for Grind Games, Seven Studios, Six Studios, and Activision. Letizia has previously worked at both Sega and Fox, and will be overseeing Paramount projects which have been licensed to other publishers.

Isaacs added that Paramount may be looking for outside financing to help expand into the video game space.

Oh dear, this sounds like the market will be swamped with bad games based on bad movies. No thanks, Paramount.

I really liked The Italian Job game they released a while back (the one based on the original Michael Caine movie, not that god awful remake. Man, I really hated the remake. Paramount! Gimme my money back!)

Not likely BigSmitts. Do you realize how big Paramount is? It's not necessarily Paramount, but the combined corporate power of Sumner Redstone that is way bigger than EA

For those of you who cant read between the lines wat this means is another film production entity is looking for a quick cash in by producing half-@ssed "casual" games and crappy movie tie-ins

Weird I was actually thinking about this a few days ago. Most movie adaptations in VG are garbage, but in those cases the games was realyl just part of an overall marketing strategy as opposed to a real attempt to make a geeod game (thanks E.T.) But think if the movies studio really took it seriously and dumped the kind of money they put into films in to vidoegames. I mean we already get a dearth of movies that are crap every wekk practicallly. What if a studio really backed aproven development house or even a comeup with good ideas (like Dishwasher samaurai) and gave the resources to really push the envelope. Would be interesting

YAY! Soon we will see all the studios follow. They will have to -as most of them know that the internet is killing the music and film industry to the point that downloading movies has gotten as easy as downloading an mp3. Now, what will happen to the MEGA Hollywood star then? I say good-bye to Tom Cruise and George Clooney! Unless Paramount makes a game where we get to smash them with a mallet at a CGI premiere party -complete with a Pizza Hut tie-in link so we can eat at the "after party" with their heads sitting on a platter. Hooray!

Sadly most games based on movies are "meh" at best. Hopefully they have plans to change that.

p.s. No games about romantic comedies pls.

Games based on movies ... this will put Paramount in a tough spot. How can one company manage to make a movie based off a game based off a movie?

I'm sure EA will help with "outside financing" Paramount should stick with what they know.... And I hate, HATE, movie based games...even movies I like. I watched the movie, why in the h311 am I going to play the game. Not for the unexpected plot twists, i know how it ends, and def not for the game play, that always sux.

Not too fond of Paramount as a studio these days, nevermind a publisher. Luckily Gore Verbinski beat them to the punch by a month. The game is on!

@ Ra-Devil

Because a game is casual dsnt mean it'll sell more... I dnt think the "simple" controls that you describe determine whether a game will be bought or not... P'm almost sure that Ninja Gaiden 2 (whose controls will obviously not be difficult) will sell more than Assassin's Creed. You chose the wrong example to illustrate your point man... Ninja Gaiden is great whther hard or easy to play...

well as we all know, excellent games based on movies are very rare (extinct if i dare say) so this is not real appealing... i'll care when the results are fruitful... Long Live the Consumer

all or nearly all movie tie in games are rubbish

people buy up the hype buy the game at full price and within weeks the shops are selling them half the price they was originally.

dunno if that happens in the states but it sure does in the uk

The problem with the whole, "stop buying casual games, and they'll stop making them," is that it's just like Dynasty Warriors. Every single one of them suck. Every single one of them are the same thing. And yet still, to this day, for some reason that eludes me, they still sell the games. Are people actually having fun playing these games?? Is that possible? I mean, you push the attack button a thousand times while dodging one guy's attack, as they never attack you all at the same time...

Anyway, they'll never stop making the casual game, and in fact, it is the casual game that will grow to be more popular and more successful than most games are now. For example, developers are starting to make games for the casual gamer, because if you make something like Ninja Gaiden, only fans and hardcore gamers can really get into it, but if you make an Assassin's Creed, with an overly-simple control scheme and gameplay mechanics, then everybody can enjoy the game, thus you sell more copies.

Guys, get prepared for the future of gaming. I can now see why EA is acquring as much as possible now and making itself stronger. Many of these media giants realize how much money the video game industry is making. Don't be surprised when you see Time-Warner, Universal, Fox and others get into the market and buy out these smaller publishers.

xcollector,
honeslty, i agree with you the casual market is garbage, but i do not think it will crash. Think of it this way, no matter how bad a game is people will some people will buy it. Its like a movie. No matter how many times from different sources that a movie int he theatres is bad, people will still go watch it and then buy it when its on DVD. Look at "Larry the Cable Guy: health Inspector". Its was a terrible D-List movie, yet people still went to the theatres and bought it on DVD.

As some people are pointing out, the Casual market does really, really suck! Many of them have bad production value and horrible graphics, mechanics, controls, the list can keep going. The casual market has very few diamonds in piles and piles of coal.

Make a billion dollar Star Trek Video game instead of a movie, and make it good too and I'll be so happy. That probably won't happen.

Every body wants to make a casual game these days. And most of them suck. This is going to lead to another video game crash that only the hardcore gamers will survive, if lucky.

Who's buying these awful 'casual' games anyway? People, stop buying / playing them, and they'll stop making them. (But, I guess the target is not us gamers, but fans of the movies and tv shows... I can see it now... my mom, playing 'her stories' (e.i. day time soaps) videogames.)

This is such BS.....maybe. Of course Hollywood is seeing how VideoGames have bested them financially for the past 5 years now I believe, they want in on that cheese the second they smelled it. BUT, if there is yet another publisher out there to develp games then maybe it's not a bad thing......unless it's just a bunch of movie tie-ins. This is sad that now people who aren't even in the business of games want in on it too just b/c they have the cash to by themselves in, in the first place.

Paramount owns the Star Trek license. Are they the mysterious shadow company who bought back the rights to Trek Online? If so, they'd have a better shot at doing it well than most anyone else because they have the history behind them. Unless they try to make it accessible to five-year-olds. Hm. Be interesting to see how this foray develops, pun intended. Paramount is a huge enterprise, so they could certainly give EA and Activision a run for their money, and Paramount can't be bought out.
