SOCOM: Confrontation mobilizes Sept. 16

Sony and Slant Six deploying modern-day tactical shooter on the PS3 later this year; community barracks now online.
By Tom Magrino, GameSpot
Posted Mar 27, 2008 4:47 pm PT

By far one of the most popular franchises for PlayStation fans is Sony's SOCOM series of modern-day tactical shooters. Unfortunately, ever since the first PlayStation 3 installment in the franchise--SOCOM: Confrontation--was first revealed in May 2007, updates for Slant Six's second effort in the series (its first being Tactical Strike for the PSP) have been few and far between. However, that changed earlier this month when Sony gave asset-starved fans the first batch of screenshots for the shooter.

With the game now in a state worthy of being shown off to the public, Sony has announced via its official blog that SOCOM: Confrontation will go hot on September 16, exclusively on the PS3. Similar to Incognito's Warhawk, Confrontation will be available at both brick-and-mortar retailers and as a digital download through the PlayStation Network.

To help the avid SOCOM community keep tabs on the game, Sony also took the lid off of its community site for Confrontation. Sony is planning a two-phase rollout for the community site, with its current operations that launched today dedicated to being a developer's blog, asset depot, and message board. After the game mobilizes, Sony will initiate phase two of its plan: launching a new site that "will integrate your SOCOM Confrontation experience onto the Web," with more details promised to come.

Given that a fully realized online component is absolutely critical to the multiplayer-only Confrontation, Sony also said that it would be drafting active and knowledge participants from the Web site's community for participation in the game's upcoming closed beta.

COD4 killer? Doubtful.
But then again this is more tactical and a good addition for us gamers. I have my fingers crossed.

@ -CoBrA93 Zipper will not be doing work on the new SOCOM..you should read more on the game and the people who worked on SOCOM TS for PSP are the ones doing this one. @ HolteEnder4Life : SOCOM does not suck its just you!

I like socom 3 but idk about CA i bought it played it but never gotten too into it. Maybe because it T and not rated M so a few things were missing and they called them Mercenaries and not terrorists so that 2 me was a turn off. The ULTIMATE question is are the problems with SOCOM 2 fixed 4 ther online play? It has been about 6months @ least since i have played SOCOM 3 online J/W if ne one still plays and if ppl who are playing are there 2 just cheat. If thats the case I'll go elsewhere for my fragging.

This might sound weird to some of you but i actually liked Socom 3 and Combined assualt. but thats probably because i started out playing socom 3. i owned Socom 2 and didn't even know it until after i bought socom 3 after a friend told me about it. i went back and played socom 2 online and it felt really weird to me. but anyways this game is going to be the sh!t i think it'll be better than CoD4.

i enjoy the SOCOM series, but i have never gone online on console. i have only been online on the portable versions. I haven't been able to try it on a console due to wired vs. WIFI trouble at my house. i may rent this game before i buy it, but the game does look pretty beautiful graphics wise. ill see the reviews before i think about buying it

The graphics look amazing, but not in those photos, the quality of them is too low. Go to socom.com and click the "latest screens" link on the right, you will not be dissapointed

I don't mind the glitching but the pathetic peices of **** that use mod discs have to go. Maybe with Zipper not involved we can actually have a game as good as COD4.

i agree with deuce make sure you find all those glitches. or at least find away to know who uses glitches and ban that PS3 address for a couple of days and then a couple of weeks and possibly forever if they continue to glitch.

Well, this kinda sucks, been waiting forever for GTA4, now we gotta wait forever for good ol' SOCOM, then when it comes out, I'm sure there will be another badass game that everyone will want, I kinda wish they wouldn't have said anything yet!!!

And I'm so jelous that testers get to play this game, YOU GUYS BETTER FIND THE GLITCHES AND GET RID OF ALL OF THEM

im ok with it being online only. Its going to "pown" (haha i sound like a little kid) COD4. Yes, im addicted to COD4 online, but when a game is dedicated to online only, it should blow away every online game out there. I mean, once we finished the little 5 hour campaign, what have we all been doing the past months?? COD4 online!! so really, the game will have a huge replay value, so it'll be cool.

Finally an actual release date. I guess I'll have to keep logging in the hours on COD4 until september.

Finally a release date, though Confrontation is more of a spin off then a sequel since there isn't a campaign and that it's multiplayer only.
Though Socom is one of the best online games for PS2 so Confrontation would be improving in that aspect only.
Still, it looks good.
