Ubisoft shares jump 12 percent on Clancy deal

News of the Rainbow Six publisher's tie-up of military media mogul's empire sends company's share price skyward.
By Luke Anderson, Emma Boyes, GameSpot UK
Posted Mar 26, 2008 5:01 am PT

French publishing giant Ubisoft revealed last week that it had bought the intellectual-property rights to the Tom Clancy name, spanning games, films, books, and merchandising that involve the best-selling author's techno-military media empire. Prior to the deal, Ubisoft had built a successful business out of the partnership with Clancy, which has borne fruit in the long-running Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six franchises, among others.

Rainbow Six Vegas, Ubisoft's successful close-quarters tactical shooter, saw its sequel debut last week and ship more than 1 million copies in the US alone. Additionally, a new Clancy-based property, the WWIII-themed strategy game EndWar, will launch on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 later this year, as will the code-named Tom Clancy's Air Combat. The publisher isn't content to leave Tom Clancy games there, given that group CEO Yves Guillemot mentioned the possibility of developing a Tom Clancy massive multiplayer online (MMO) game in the future.

Ubisoft shares rose as much as 12 percent to €54.98 ($86.54) on the news during trading yesterday, and were at €54.92 ($86.44) as of midday Wednesday on the Paris stock exchange.

I hope EA don't find out. They'll wanna buy them too. I think Take two and Ubisoft should team up.

Why even bother buying the rights? Ubisoft and Tom Clancy have had a long-standing unspoken agreement for years. How exactly is this changing anything?

i loved cod4 game but the multiplayer was a big let down for me, looked great just badly designed maps, too much like quake and not strategic enough, PheMoX comment is spot on about badly placed spawn points. Getting shot at within 2 secs of respawning is a sign of poor game design. I hate multiplayer on this and bf2142 and even bf2 still reign supreme even if graphically getting a little dated. roll on bf 3.

Though from what I hear on COD4, people are kinda getting sick of it now.
That doesn't surprise me at all. The game is cool and looks out of this world, but ultimately it's way way way too short. Even multiplayer has it's annoyingly big flaws too. Like getting spawn-killed over and over again..... they could at least try to place spawnpoints a bit more clever.

Wonder how Vegas 2 is actually doing in the US sales wise, not games shipped (which means nothing). I'd like to see how well it's doing against games like COD4, which are similar in basic nature, and Halo 3, which has continued to regain steam in light of the news that Lockout, along with Sidewinder, and a great original map are coming in April. Though from what I hear on COD4, people are kinda getting sick of it now. So I have some faith in Vegas.

Who plays these games because it has the name Tom Clancy on it? Why do they even waste money on the name and bother branding their games? I think people will still buy and play these games even if it didn't have the name.

EndWar is based in Alberta for any Canadians out there!

It's a war over our oil, I read about it in the newspaper a couple days ago!

I hope they model all the cities after the real stuff!

A likely, more detailed reason for the jump (almost a week after the initial news) is that an analyst speculated on the cost of the deal, and the market clearly thinks Ubisoft got a bargain. Which is hopefully good news for gamers - it leaves Ubisoft with more money to make games!

I just want to be honest here... since GRAW 1, UbiSoft hasn't really released a SUPER DUPER STUPENDOUSLY MANGNIFICENT 3rd person shooter under the Clancy name. Yes GRAW2 was much better (my favourite out of the 2) but the fun was short lived and the innovation wasn't as breathtaking as it first was when GRAW 1 came out.

Ok so they got the license and we all know that UbiSoft makes REALLY good (quality) games and i just hope that the next GRAW or whatever it is will be able to compete with GeOW 2 and the likes and really put the Tom Clancy franchise into an ultimate spotlight

Ubisoft is one of the smarter game publishers/developers around. They make intelligent business decisions... unlike Atari and Midway.

A modernized "Red Storm Rising" would provide a great backdrop for a MMO. Or perhaps events from "The Bear and the Dragon"

mehrdad1987 - Tom Clancy is a famous Author of Books that were based off of gov't type of scenes, like gov't people going after one man, or war like scenes as of a possible WWIII. Famous Name, can't get more famous than that.

Tom Clancy games have always treated the xbox well. Every Tom Clancy game for xbox/360 has been a must own. I just hope this doesn't lead to them stick the TC name on every game they make. Like Tom Clancy's Assassin's Creed 2.
