NPD: February sees 34 percent US sales spike

American game market bucks recession, beats analyst expectations with $1.33 billion haul; PS3 bests 360 for second month running; COD4, DMC4 top games.

With stocks falling, housing values plummeting, and the Federal Reserve dishing out emergency loans, most economists agree most parts of the US economy are on the verge of a recession. Conversely, the game industry is on the rebound, according to the latest report from the NPD group. After a mixed January, US retail sales of game software, hardware, and accessories shot up 34 percent in February, topping $1.33 billion and beating analyst expectations.

"Even following a red-hot 2007, the video games industry shows no sign of letting up as year-to-date sales through February are up 12 percent over last year," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "Taking the extra week of sales included in the 2007 figures, on a comparable week's basis, 2008 is up approximately 26 percent over last year (through February)."

Of the various sectors, software generated the most revenue, rising 47 percent to nearly $669 million. The month's best-selling title was once again the Xbox 360 edition of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which moved 296,200 units during the month. Hot on its heels was the hellfire-kissed Devil May Cry 4, which sold 295,200 on the 360 (2nd) and 233,500 units on the PlayStation 3 (4th). DMC4's massive combined 528,7000-unit haul made it the best-selling domestic multiplatform game of the month, all but ensuring a Devil May Cry 5 somewhere down the line.

Coming in third was the ubiquitous Wii Play, which sold just shy of 290,000 units by virtue of being bundled with the Wii Remote. Another Wii game, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, came in fifth with 222,900 units sold. Rounding out the top 10 were Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (DS, 205,600 units), Lost Odyssey (360, 203,600 units), Turok (360, 197,700 units), the PS2 version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (183,00 units), and Rock Band (360, 161,800 units).

On the hardware front, Nintendo was once again the undisputed victor, with the DS selling 587,600 units and the Wii 432,000. However, the Xbox 360, the third-place finisher for most of 2007, finished at the bottom of the pack once again, coming in fifth with 254,600 units. It was bested by both the PlayStation 2's 351,800 units and 280,000 units of the Blu-ray-disc-playing PlayStation 3, which was boosted by the lighting-quick implosion of the rival HD DVD format last month. Last and, numerically speaking, least was the PlayStation Portable with 243,100 units.

"While hardware inventory issues at retail may still be lingering post-holiday, the fact that all now-gen systems generated significant year-over-year hardware sales increases indicates the situation is coming into balance faster than it did last year," said Frazier. "I was most surprised by the PS2 hardware sales numbers this month. While it certainly has earned its spot among the now-gen slate of console systems because of it staying power in the marketplace, the fact that it realized such significant growth this month is really a testament to its broad adoption and the response of consumers to promotional activity at retail."

Even before NPD released its report to the press, the big three console makers were filling inboxes worldwide with their own spin on the matter. Saying it was "extending its lead" in overall sales, Microsoft claimed that "$332 million was spent on the Xbox 360 platform this month, capturing 39 percent of this generation's ecosystem." The software giant also claimed that the US installed base for the 360 is 9.6 million versus the Wii's 8.1 million and the PS3's 3.8 million.

Unsurprisingly, Sony made much of the PS3's trumping of the 360 for the second month in a row, and played up that sales of the console have increased 120 percent year over year. It also reminded the world of several exclusives for the platform, Gran Turismo 5 prologue (April 15) and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (June 12). Sony also announced there are 3.3 million registered PlayStation Network visitors in North America who have downloaded 56 million pieces of content.

Finally, Nintendo took the obvious approach, noting that 47.6 percent of all hardware sold in the US in February bore its logo. Software sales weren't too shabby, either. "Nintendo DS games topped all software sales, with more than 3.6 million units sold," the company crowed in a statement. "Consumers purchased nearly 2.9 million software units for Wii. Four of every 10 games sold were for Nintendo systems."

    wii is topping and surpassing xbox 360 in less then 2 years? I am a big wii fan, and hope it keeps like dat (even if i still think this trend will end soon sadly) , but still : xbox 360 is a great console too.
    It should deserve more attention by people overall the world.

    I've been reading alot of the comments left on here. And i just want to know the that the PSN is bad or it sucks have you even tryed the PSN. I think it comes down to real opinions from people that have a PS3 and a 360 and have tryed both when comes to which ones is better. Like someone said in a comment which is a fact sony has made the PS3 to live up to 10 years and proberly more than that. which means the PS3 will keep getting better and so will the PSN untill Home comes out XBL will always be at number one. But i still like PSN better i'm a online gamer and thats why i bought the PS3 and the 360 but i like the PS3 online better because of the games but also because i never get lag. I will not say the 360 sucks because it is also a great console even thoe it does have some over heating problems i'm scared to lieve it on like i do with my ps3 just incase something happens and thats coming from someone with the elite sorry about spelling. But this Fanboy crap must stop they all great consoles people should just play and be happy. O and saying the PS3 graphics suck and have crap games that is really old with great RPGS coming out for it and MGS4 and Home coming out and so FFXIII and FF Verus XIII GTP and so on this is a great year to be a gamer for both consoles. lol i think thats all i have to say on that matter lol.

    the xbox360 won the accessories and software sales which is good. its good for the making money part. looks like the ps3 is making a push.

    the $399 PlayStation 3, a high-power gaming console that's more computer than disc player. People can still watch new Blu-ray releases, but they won't be able to see picture-in-picture commentary or any other Profile 1.1 feature.

    That's why a lot of people call the PS3 a best buy in Blu-ray players. Aside from moving up to a Profile 2.0 level via a firmware update, it can also stream media, play DivX video and send photos and video over a home network

    OMG. You are all the reason why I've stopped gaming and have enjoyed the outdoors more than any other time in my life. Who knew there was a world without dorks outside my house? That's right. My house. Not my parent's basement or attic but the house I bought that garages the new car I bought so I can drive home and watch my new plasma tv so I can watch Blu-Ray and play some video games for ENTERTAINMENT instead of abating an addiction. You all need to calm your aces down. But Im lmao that PS2 outsold the Xbox360, which broke down on me three times which I sold to my sisters husband for what I bought it for. I love America.

    Funny, because you can still play Metal Gear without rumble... but you cant play online with the 360 without Live. There is a difference, and you know it. Weak point.

    NineBall - I wasn't pointing out the negatives, just countering another user's posts with my own thoughts on his theory. With that, a theory can only bring points of conjecture. If his theory was a reality, then a result could be established, putting the matter to rest. It would be in the realm of an alternate reality for me to put fact to a point of conjecture, for no facts lie in the realm of the theoretical.

    Darkride - How would one best translate a verbal communication in sessions at Game Developer Conference into a believable source for you? How could I make you believe that I was talking to the lead programmer of Factor 5 when Lair was still in development? Without you being there, there seems to be no way to provide a valid enough source that could not be considered hearsay. What I can tell you, and the only thing I can clearly back, is the controller issue thing. Where households that had game systems for the past decade or so, there were only specific members of the household playing on it. With the Wii, more uncommon players are joining in. I don't think I have to back that fact too much, as we can both likely agree to that. That said, these people have nothing to invest into the console, as they are just what would otherwise be passerbys. I leave you with an example within my own family of such a thing. My family has had a console since the days of the Atari 2600, in which my parents happily took turns in Combat, Asteroids, etc. In fact, my mother was a champion at Centipede. When the NES came out, my dad would only play Duck Hunt, and my mother didn't play at all. I brought the Wii over to my brother's house this past Christmas, and what would otherwise have been a day of sports on the TV, the Wii was on the whole time, and the entire family was getting games of Wii Sports on. I know this is a personal experience, yet Ive seen and heard other families who have had similar experiences. Sure, I'll agree that if the Wii was $500, people wouldn't run out and buy it. Yet, Ive seen a few dozen people who tried the Wii actively go out and search for one afterwards. The saying is that it is a console that caters to all. But why? The price? People just want to randomly go out and blow $250 so they have the console in their home? The answer is because they had a positive experience, they were able to jump right into a game and have fun. Think about trying to explain Wii Sports tennis to a person, how the controls work. "Swing". Batting? Swing. Golf? Hold A and swing. Take shooting games... the B button is shaped like a trigger. Point and shoot.

    Lastly, I wasn't putting down the PSN as I was praising the architecture of XBL. The PSN is good, and I might even rank it higher than the Wii online, but the XBL really nailed it. That's what I was saying, not that it was bad, but its just not at the level of the XBL service.

    Another example, I own a Premium and a Core (aka Arcade) which I have at the cottage. That was a bargin, see at the cottage I don't have highspeed internet, don't need wi/fi, don't even need a hard disk, the memory card works just fine, until recently I didn't even have a 16:9 HDTV up there.

    So to me that was a bargin.

    Umm...except it's not...unless you only play 1 multi-player game a year. In that case you are correct, but if you only play 1 game a year... never mind."

    What I meant was if you dont have Live, and buy Call of Duty and want to play online, you're going to pay $110 all for that one game. You can say that the extra $50 goes for online for other games, that's a valid point, but you have to admit that buying a Pro 360 and spending to play online puts it up to $400, making the PS3 look like a bargain.

    @ bardkieran - You know, I find it rather ironic that you actually have a blog about "killing fanboys" and how they are ruining the industry by posting (or telling their friends, family, etc.) negative things about a game console, but lo and behold, you pretty much are doing the same thing here.

    Although, I'm sure you'll say you are stating "facts" and not opinion like everyone else, right?

    And although, I (and I'm sure most others) don't have the experience that you have in gaming, that doesn't mean that your "opinion" is the final word on a subject... just as mine and everyone else isn't.

    Another reason why the PS3 might not have dominated is the fact that theironline isn't as stable or as good as services like XBLive. The lan/network gamer will choose the 360 any day of the week, as they dominantly play online.

    I have no reason to believe you are incorrect with this statement, other than my own experience. Do you have any links to prove this or is this just your opinion?

    bardkieran. Tell you what. Perhaps I'm being too hasty, and you're certainly entitled to your opinion. If you have any info regarding stability issues for the PSN (because I certainly haven't noticed any), or independant developers comments on why MS and Nintendo are better than Sony, or some type of study that explains why the 8 or more button controller was holding back gaming and the Wii's success wasn't price point and shrewd marketing, please feel free to send me a message because I would love to read them. I'm a reasonable guy. If I'm wrong I'll admit it, or if you can back up your claims I'd be more than happy to consider your opinions. As for your Clinton comment, sorry, I don't follow US politics. I don't get the reference.

    As for Home it's been over 2-years that we've been waiting...talk to me when it gets here. But after the beta what I feel is it's a neat idea that just doesn't have what it takes. Most of the people will be team dancing naked begging others to come hang out in their pad...they needed to do something but the result is more like having people enter SecondLife to play Motorstorm and it still doesn't get around the in-game communication gaps.

    One thing I will say...it's a good thing headsets are few and far between on PSN...if you don't like all the kids on XBL you're in for a rude shock at Home.

    darkride - Hit a nerve, chief? I am an independent game developer myself, and have been in the industry over 8 years. I'm calling a spade a spade, straight through. You want me to list all the stuff I've heard from other developers who have worked with the PS3? You'd probably close your eyes and say I'm lying anyway.

    You claim I'm bringing up tired myths, then start saying how the Wii is all about price and fad, the same old line that's been said to death. You work for Hillary Clinton or something?

    As for the independent developer, Nintendo and Microsoft are the ones that the indie devs are leaning towards, where Sony has done little to nothing to entice the indies, nor provide a quality toolset that compares to XBLA or WiiWare.

    You need to rethink your game plan and choose your battles, Darkride. I come here with a deep experience within the industry, far beyond what the average "Joe Gamer" knows about it. You don't have the right to say that I am bringing up nonsense, you haven't earned your stripes in the industry nor have the communication that someone within the industry is privy to. Thus, you have no ground to stand on here, so simply desist. You don't have to be happy with what I say, but just because YOU don't believe it does not make it any less true.

    4qaurters - That's hard to say, that if all the systems were at $249, that the PS3 would dominate. Remember that there is a large influx of new or returning gamers who became Wii owners. Why? The price? Nope, it was the easiness of the controls. Many moons ago, videogames only had 1 or 2 buttons. It didn't require a degree in cryptology to play a game. When Sony and the other systems started making 8 button controlers, these gamers gave up on the complicated setup. The return to a simpler control system is what brought them back.

    Another reason why the PS3 might not have dominated is the fact that theironline isn't as stable or as good as services like XBLive. The lan/network gamer will choose the 360 any day of the week, as they dominantly play online.

    Lastly, both Nintendo and Microsoft are more openly catering to new and independent developers further than Sony has attempted thus far, bringing new titles to their systems via XBLA and WiiWare. By catering to newer developers, they are putting their consoles in favor of the next new studio that might put out the next major franchise.

    Yuck, really, it's the principle of paying to play online. It's not for the in-game dashboard, or for the god host in Gears of War that can shotgun you from 1,000 feet away, it's about paying to play online that is free on PC, PS3, PS2, PSP, DS, and Wii. Sure, the Xbox Live interface is great, but when Sony gets the in-game XMB and Home, Xbox Live's price will be a little less justified. And by the way, Xbox Live isnt $4 a month. It's 50 dollars right now so that I can play for the next year. 50 dollars that I have to pay so I can play online Gears of War, a game I bought for $60 in December of 2006. $4 a month doesnt sound bad, but considering it's spent all in one $50 chunk, it's bad. It's like buying a game for $110 bucks, or buying a 360 Pro for $400 because you have to add that $50 charge. Funny, that puts the 360 Pro at 40 GB PS3 price... without wifi, blu ray, or that twice as big 40 GB harddrive. I guess in the case of the 360 then it's fair to say... you dont get what you pay for.

    It's funny, I remember when XBL launched, I was hooked on Counterstrike and Day of Defeat on the PC and said "What, that's crazy! Why would anyone pay for what's free on the PC?" Then XBL caught on, I eventually gave Halo2 a try for a couple of months but just couldn't get over the sheer number of racist, homophobic 12 year olds. And they were all better than me. I gave up until the 360 game out, and had my Gold membership since launch, up till last Oct when I realized that I was doing zero online gaming on the 360 and everything on the PS3. On top of that, I only knew one person with a 360 (and I bought it for him as a gift) and he didn't game online. Last fall all my gaming family and friends made the switch from PS2's to PS3's, all within weeks of each other. None of them were ever online gamers, and now they all are! Anyway, it was the community and the games that kept me coming back to the PSN (RFOM, then Warhawk, now COD4). After losing my 360 again in Aug/Sept (my latest rrod replacement scratched disks) I finally decided XBL was a service I wasn't using and could do without. You mention you get what you pay for? It's true. I spent a little more for the PS3 and actually got a reliable console with great online for no extra cost.

    Thats cool you ps3 guys are happy about the machine selling but I am still happy being an xbox owner and havign way more fun and awesoem games. Japanese "flavored" game dont do it for me. I need bad azz 1st person shooters and western rpg's to be satisfied. All the good games that ps3 has or will have are also on xbox .. the oppposite cant be said. Xbox has ALOT of awesome games ps3 doesnt .. America rocks!!!!

    I own a 360,but I have to say,PS3 has a good chance of winning in the end,simply because it has Blu-ray.Sony was thinking long term and it's probably going to get good long term results from that,although at the beginning they were forced to keep the PS3 at 600 bucks.Now that it is like 400 bucks and,of course,still has Blu-ray,a lot of people are saying "why not,future format AND gaming".Blu-ray was a very good move on Sony's part and if Microsoft hopes to keep it up they need to release a peripheral.As for the software sales, 360 owners just tend to be more hardcore gamers,360 has the largest span of games,and,undeniably,Xbox Live makes games more worth it.As for the Wii...I'm not surprised,you start as cheap as that(250) with the extended fad of motion sensing and all those loyal fans of Nintendo,it's hard to beat. Example of that Nintendo "fan-dom"?People in my school are STILL keeping Super Smash Bros. Brawl as the main topic of their conversation until now,makes me think,it's a very good game,but couldn't be a bit too overrated?People are denouncing all games for it's sake,I question that they truly think that.Nonetheless,it is up there in comparison to other games.Hell,the whole gaming industry is doing good and each system has a reason for its success,we the gamers win.

    If ALL the cosoles were the same price....$249, rest assured the biggest seller would be PS3. Everyone that ones a PS2 (see huge sales for last month) woulb upgrading, but many people, who are either cheap or just can't come up with $400 bones for it will pick it up when it comes down just a shade more. BET ON IT! It will outsell Wii when they are equal in price.

    Afford has nothing to do with it. I can afford to throw $4 a month out the window, but why would I? I tried it, didn't like it and now I sit back and watch other people doing it wondering "Why on earth are they still doing it? There's a better way."
    At any rate, my point was we've done well as gamers overall the last two gen's, and then I took an unrelated dig at Microsoft for saddling us with fees to play online.

    Ok. Let's have a look. You're right, it isn't an accurate prediciton. Feb 07's sales were up 35% from Feb 06's sales for the 360, whereas the total annual sales fell 43% from 2006 to 2007. I wouldn't feel comfortable making a number predicition for sales growth for either console in 2008, but it doesn't take a genius to notice a trend of growing PS3 sales vs slowing 360 sales.

    If you cannot afford the $4 / month for XBL then don't pay it.

    I don't see you complaining about your High Speed internet charges...cell phone rates, daily coffe costs, monthly WoW fee. If you don't like it don't pay it...different arguement. Frankly if MS had not brought out XBL we very well might still be listening to Sony saying "The business concept has not been proven so consoles do not need to be online"

    Yuck_Too. Agreed, the competition isn't a bad thing. That being said, last gen brought us great games across all three platforms as well, regardless of who was winning. I don't see how one company having dominance over the others really hurt us as gamers last gen over this gen. If any harm was done I think it was with the invent of "pay extra for online" that MS saddled us with. Thankfully Sony learned from the PS2 and beefed up their online this gen vs last. For me, I want to play online games lagfree, period. One charges, one doesn't. Hopefully people will wise up and MS stop nickle and diming their customers. I'm not holding my breath on this one.

    Sorry but you need to realize saying that "because the PS3 showed a 200% increase in monthly sales for Feb '07 compared to Feb '08 is how the future is going to unfold" is dumb.

    By that same logic if I compared the 360 Feb '06 to Feb '07 that should have been the increase used to estimate sales for '07 to '08...except it doesn't work like that, and while you may not know it, Dark does but he still spun the number.

    I just called him on it.

    Well darkride, the greatest irony of all on these message boards is fanboys pretending to not be fanboys, while calling out other fanboys. To me, pretending to not be a fanboy but still getting personal about these discussions is worse than saying "MGS4 FTW pwnage!!!" or "Halo 3 rulezzzz!!!11". Ya know, call me a Sony a fanboy. That's fine, I'm a Playstation fan. But I'm at least rational. I can at least be rational about discussions and not get personal, or just be rational and admit faults of myself or heck, Sony. I dont consider myself as a fanboy, because I like Nintendo and the 360 too, but I guess having a favorite console (out of owning all three like myself) makes you a "fanboy" on these boards. But anyway, like I said, the more heated people get about comments on here, the more it shows it bothers them... and that says more than anything.

    As for why are things better now then under the PS2 reign...competition is better and right now we have 3 companies on even ground...that's better then one company with 90% of the market.

    It's this kind of statement that really brings forward just how silly and emotional people are in their hatred of Sony. How is the Wii being dominant any better than Sony or MS being the dominant console? How is everything that much "better" because Nintendo is winning? Really how is Sony not being on top any better than last gen, because I think we all did pretty good as gamers under the PS2's long reign.

    I gave you the benefit of the doubt on the 190% / month as sarcasm. However I did work out the math based on a more appropriate increase and decrease.

    Long story short...if the 360 stopped selling consoles today and the PS3 continued at their current numbers it will take a little over 2-years for them to catch up in sales numbers.

    Spin whatever numbers you like that is the absolute best case and not even you can argue it will happen that way.

    Then again there is the 360 price cut in conjunction with GTA4 bundle so we'll be able to argue a whole new set of percentages at that point."

    Unlike both of you I own all the junk we talk about here. Only thing I argue against is for the most part Sony's PR strategy and dumb comments from fanboi's like yourselves.

    Well, duh. I never said the PS3 was going to dominate. I even said that I wasnt claiming the PS3 was going to continue to outsell the 360. There isnt a clear dominant console this gen, unless you count the Wii, which isnt in real competition with anybody. But dont get so personal about a simple post I made addressing some comments you made. I didnt get personal with you at all. Funny how this "system war" stuff really gets to you....

    Indeed, it doesn't have any bearing on individuals or their enjoyment of their respective consoles. I find the whole argument rather silly and personally try not to get pulled into the "which system is da best" arguments you see around here. What bothers me is the misinformation. It's as if I happened along someone preaching up on a soapbox with an attentive throng of onlookers gathered round that the world is flat, and he's got the numbers to prove it. At the end of the day it doesn't change the facts for me what this nut and his followers believe, but I'll still feel compelled to stop and say "Well that's just not right, and here's why." Some are just compelled to debate, I guess. I see so many inaccuracies and opinion masquerading as fact, usually directed towards Sony, and as an informed gamer I can't help but to add my voice. Maybe it's ego, but when I go home at night my arguments in favor of the PS3 don't stop me from playing my 360 when the mood strikes me.

    This is my first time posting regarding any of these "console war" discussions... I have read countless arguments on who is better and one system is beating the other... with all of this being said, can someone please answer me this.... why does it really matter who is beating who in sales? Regardless of what I have read, it just appears to be an ego aspect of people with no real definite argument on either side of the table. Doesn't this just mean, we, as consumers, get the best variety out there due to competition? In the end, isn't that the point?
