Barlog working on Mad Max game

God of War II director officially confirms his next project will be based on the franchise in a partnership with writer-director George Miller.

Cory Barlog quit Sony Computer Entertainment America in November 2007, and when asked about his reasons for leaving midway through the God of War III project, would only say, "For me, the whole departure from Sony was not exactly the ideal route that I wanted to go, but in the end I think it is the absolute best thing I could ever have done."

Back in January, Barlog also said that he was working on several projects, although he wasn't allowed to talk about any of them at that point.

Now it appears that the man is ready to talk, as he's told N'Gai Croal over at Newsweek that he's working alongside George Miller (the Australian director of the Mad Max movies and also, oddly, Happy Feet) on a Mad Max game for undisclosed platforms.

The game will be based on Mad Max: Fury Road, which Miller had been working on in 2003 before the war in Iraq meant the project was put on hold--due to a variety of reasons, including the American dollar "crashing" against the Aussie dollar. Now, the plan is to release the movie alongside the game--which will not star the original Mad Max, Mel Gibson. There aren't many details of the game as yet, except that it will feature vehicles, melee weapons, and projectile weapons.

Miller also told Newsweek that he's been approached many times in the past to make a Mad Max game but had resisted. He said, "For as many years as I can remember, we've been asked to make games of the Mad Max story. I mean, we've been approached by every major game company or developer virtually, asking 'Can we do a Mad Max game?' And to me, it always felt like what I used to call empty calorie action...which is just action for its own sake without anything underneath it."

What someone needs to make is a covoy game from "Basra to Mosul"

Mad Max? That's diggin' into the old movie vaults. It's a tough choice, come up with a whole new plot, in a Mad Max style, or follow the movie(s). Unless... there's a new movie in the works. Mel hasn't died yet. If they can resurrect Indiana, Rambo and Rocky, why not Mad Max?

Hmm... I've learned to ALWAYS be suspicious of games released beside a movie. I'd rather have an original Mad Max story for the game. I've dug the post-apocalyptic vibe since I played Fallout and it appears to be being resurrected en-mass. Hopefully these PA games will get the atmosphere down... it's gonna be tough to beat the atmosphere of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (especially with the darker nights mods).

Definitely a change in direction from God of War. I'm anxious to see how it turns out.

I believe it would be great to see what devs can put into a game based on Mad Max...

well, now that I think of it, this game would work but I think they'd have to butcher the story some, to make it work as a game, or they can add another chapter in the Mad Max series, something that takes place between each of the movies

"I'm just here for the gasoline. " I like the sound of this, cant wait to see what Barlog cooks up with the Mad Max universe.

    This is [potentially] awesome news!!!

@redskinstu: Agreed. Hopefully it's not just some lame combat-racing game or some such nonsense.

I hope it's good. It has to be bleak, savage, like the movies.

"There was a Mad Max NES game... which was horrible. But probably Miller had nothing to do with that."

What the?! I completely disagree! The game might have been kinda hard, but it was lots of fun! They better do this new one right because it has the potential to be amazing! I kinda wish Rockstar was making it, but let's see what these guys can do. We know they can make a good game, so maybe that will hold true for this!

I really liked the Road Warrior, even the first film wasn't that bad... but the third one sucked

I dont usually like to make pointless comments, but as I've been waiting for a mad max game for, well, decades now, I'd just like to let out a Homer "woohoo!". That is all. Next you'll be telling me a decent fps developer like Epic has the Aliens license... ok thats too much to ask I know

Mad Max? Now that could be very interesting if done well, and kept a post-apocalyptic feel. Something to keep an eye on.

I still like the fact Mel Gibson is "too old" for the part, considering they could easily have a 50-something Max still roaming the wasteland, since Harrison Ford is still pulling off Indiana Jones at 65. Unless they get Gerard Butler or Clive Owens or someone along that line I'm not intereted in the new movie.

Since Barlog is in charge of the new Mad Max game I will give it a look, considering what he did with God Of War II.

it's to bad that Cory Barlog is working on this, because it going to suck, he should be doing something original, and make REAL games

Mel may be iconic, but he is virtually mute in all but Thunderdome. A voice actor could pull of looking intense and saying "I'll do it." The true question is whether they can lock down Kjell Nilsson, voice of the immensely rad Lord Humungus.

I loved MadMAx 1 and 2 movies .. even if they do commit the cardinal sin of speeding up footage to make cars look like they are going faster, it wasnt necessary and makes them look worse than if they were shown at actual speed!! still, great low budget movies.

MadMax3:Beyond Thunderdome was different, it started off ok but it was total rubbish, the stupid lost children storyline and NO CAR ACTION!!!

If the game has plenty of road punks, missions to steal fuel, and plenty of violent car chases... it could be pretty cool, im imagining RoadRash style online battle races with cars, bikes, buggies, trucks etc

They better get a voice actor who sounds just like Mel cause he is the iconic warrior of the franchise.

I hope it rocks. Mad Max movies were always really intense and really bleak. If they can capture that with an impressive story, they will be getting my weak dollar as well.

It doesn't get much more bad a$$ than Mad Max. Mel who, wasn't he the guy who pretty much got blacklisted from Hollywood, what an idiot. Stoked on the game though.
