Game Republic goes Hollywood in 2010

Folklore studio partners with Brash Entertainment for early-in-development untitled film tie-in for unannounced platforms.

Yoshiko Okamoto may not be a household name to many gamers in the West, but his games are. The legendary Capcom veteran and current CEO of Game Republic is credited as the creator of the Resident Evil and Street Fighter franchises, and his team at Capcom contributed to best-selling franchises including Devil May Cry, Lost Planet, Darkstalkers, and Onimusha. With Game Republic, Okamoto is also responsible for the PlayStation 3 action role-playing game Folklore.

No stranger to Hollywood, Okamoto's Resident Evil is widely heralded as one of the most successful--or at least tolerable--game-to-film adaptations. (Street Fighter has faced a far stiffer reception.) It makes sense, then, that the designer's Game Republic will be partnering with Hollywood gangplank Brash Entertainment on an as-yet-untitled game "based on a popular Hollywood film" for release in 2010.

Aside from being a Hollywood property tie-in, details on the game are nonexistent. However, Okamoto did lend some insight into his intentions for the project, saying, "One of my goals with games is to do something revolutionary with something that has been never been seen before. The opportunity to re-imagine a fictional world provided by a compelling Hollywood IP using the interactive medium of games is very exciting to me."

"In collaborating with Brash, we were introduced to a very compelling fictional world and given the freedom to expand it through the game," continued Okamoto. "We are working directly with the creative talent from the film, and feel that the close collaboration will result in an amazing game play experience that immerses the player in an incredible fantasy world."

    Yes, RaiKageRyu is right...

They're making a GAME BASED ON A MOVIE, not a movie based on a game.

This has been done before... think Robocop and ET but of course, i'm sure it will be a lot more fun that those games. =P

I'm taking guesses on what movie it's based on... my bet is... Indiana Jones.

so far i say it doesnt matter which way it goes, it has been a crap fest. however taking a movie and spinning the story off, or making a prequel or something, hell, anything else but literally translating the movie into the game and vice versa could be interesting. hopefuly this cat can deliver!

Nope Game Republic did the game, it was GAIA (cozy okada's company) that did most of the monster/folk design. You basically got it backwards.

You guys are reading it wrong. He's making a game based on Hollywood IP. Not the other way around.

Well, it says it's a popular movie being made into a game, so we know they're not planning to destroy some random game for the big screen as usual....And honestly, I suspect that the main problem with most game to movie and movie to game conversions is that the people making them have no clue what they're doing...This guy clearly knows how to make games, so as long as he doesn't decide to make a movie...

    >.> When I read the title blurb I was worried they were thinking of doing a Folklore movie, so pretty much anything is better than that...There aren't any recent movies I care about enough to mourn in any case.

Nice. In the space of about 25 years, we've gone from bedroom game making to big hollywood productions.

I think it like some movies are in game but with different features with similar format.
