Game Republic goes Hollywood in 2010
Folklore studio partners with Brash Entertainment for early-in-development untitled film tie-in for unannounced platforms.
Yoshiko Okamoto may not be a household name to many gamers in the West, but his games are. The legendary Capcom veteran and current CEO of Game Republic is credited as the creator of the Resident Evil and Street Fighter franchises, and his team at Capcom contributed to best-selling franchises including Devil May Cry, Lost Planet, Darkstalkers, and Onimusha. With Game Republic, Okamoto is also responsible for the PlayStation 3 action role-playing game Folklore.
No stranger to Hollywood, Okamoto's Resident Evil is widely heralded as one of the most successful--or at least tolerable--game-to-film adaptations. (Street Fighter has faced a far stiffer reception.) It makes sense, then, that the designer's Game Republic will be partnering with Hollywood gangplank Brash Entertainment on an as-yet-untitled game "based on a popular Hollywood film" for release in 2010.
Aside from being a Hollywood property tie-in, details on the game are nonexistent. However, Okamoto did lend some insight into his intentions for the project, saying, "One of my goals with games is to do something revolutionary with something that has been never been seen before. The opportunity to re-imagine a fictional world provided by a compelling Hollywood IP using the interactive medium of games is very exciting to me."
"In collaborating with Brash, we were introduced to a very compelling fictional world and given the freedom to expand it through the game," continued Okamoto. "We are working directly with the creative talent from the film, and feel that the close collaboration will result in an amazing game play experience that immerses the player in an incredible fantasy world."
