Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix beta going Commando on XBLA

Eight-week sampler for Backbone's reimagining of Capcom's classic fighter will come packed in with Commando 3 this spring.

Capcom's Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting is widely heralded as one of the greatest fighting games of all time, and its addition to Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade had more than a few classic fighter fans returning to the dojo in preparation for online brawling. However, its arrival on Xbox Live Arcade was met with a bittersweet reception, as while the single-player component was a near-flawless emulation, the much-anticipated online features suffered from debilitating lag.

Commando 3

Check out the latest movie for Commando 3.

With Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Capcom has another chance to do right by its throng of faithful fans, and the publisher seems to have learned its lesson from its first outing. Capcom announced today that it will be offering free access to the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix beta to Xbox Live Gold members who purchase Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3. A continuation of the high-octane action series with roots dating back to 1985, Commando 3 will run gamers 800 Microsoft points ($10). It will also be available for download on the PlayStation 3.

With Capcom touting the SSFII Turbo HD Remix beta as the first of its kind for a digitally distributed XBLA title, Xbox Live Gold members will be able to download an access key for the advanced trial alongside Commando 3 this spring. The beta is expected to be available for play shortly thereafter. The beta period will run for approximately eight weeks, and world warriors will be able to battle it out on a single stage as either Ken or Ryu. According to Capcom, the purpose of the beta is to stress-test the game's network code in anticipation of its full release on XBL and the PlayStation Network later this year.

Adapted for XBLA and PSN by Backbone Entertainment, SSFII Turbo HD Remix brings the classic fighter into the high-definition age, with completely redrawn visuals created by Udon Comics, publishers of the current Street Fighter comic book. Aside from its aesthetic enhancements, the game packs in a number of updated features under the hood, including online multiplayer matches, in-game voice chatting, and worldwide rankings.

Purists will be pleased to know the game is playable in all its old-school glory, but Capcom will also be packing in a "rebalanced mode" that promises "massive changes across the board to all Street Fighter characters as created and tested by some the world's top-ranked professional Street Fighter players." Gamers will also be able to choose between the game's original 4:3 resolution or a new widescreen mode, as well as the game's original tunes or a remixed soundtrack.

More than likely I'll end up getting SSFT HD when it is released as a full versions. I cannot say I'm not without my concerns, as the last time I played SSFT, the game felt horribly unbalanced and difficult. More than likely this is due to my love the Alpha series, which is a lot more different than SFII and SFIII. I also can't wait to get my hands on sprite rips if possible.

As for people complaining about the BETA being available to those who buy Commandos 3, knock it off. Game companies have been doing this for a very long time. Brave Fencer Musashi had a bonus disk which had Final Fantasy VIII as a demo, Dragon Quest 8 had a bonus disk which had Final Fantasy XII on it, Parasite Eve had a bonus disk which had Brave Fencer Musashi as a demo...these are only semi-recent examples.

People are going to buy Commando for the beta, not for Commando. Cammando is the true bonus.

SSFIITHDR FTMFL. Seriously, stop adding adjectives and work on new SFs. Because we all know they are paying more attention to the various SF2s than they will to SF4.

Too Bad about M$ Dpad, I won't be buying this from XBLA, I already learned my lesson from MK, Castlevania, and SFII. The Dpad is atrocious, and that forces me to buy this on PSN.

I am not buying some cheesy 3rd party controller, wasting more of my dollars.

    Your Loss M$.

First thing i thought of was the official controllers D-pad... it really is poor for streetfighter, i had to resort to using the analogue stick when playing SF2turbo and SFanniversaryCollection.

The original xbox1 'S' controller had a really good D-pad for Streetfighter but it didnt have enought buttons, now the 360's controller has enough buttons but a crap D-pad Anybody recommend a controller with a good D-pad?

  • painpas

    Posted Mar 13, 2008 9:15 am PT

Look just search you'll find a third party controller with a proper d-pad.

can't wait for this will download virsion of street fighter. for that person who said about the xbox dpad there is nothing wrong with that however i am with him on the six button layout thing that would be nice but that won't stop me buying super street fighter hd

I also agree with some who've mentioned the standard controller wont do. A hefty 6 button controller with the ole fashion joystick is needed. It's easier to pull of those corkscrew pile drivers from Zangief when using the oldskool setup.

This looks good. I've been a Street Fighter fan since '92. Bring it now. The other XBL Street fighter looked like crap, when placed on a high def screen.

Yeah, eff this, I refuse to buy a game just to play a demo or beta of another game. I didn't get Dragon Quest VIII to play the FFXII demo, and I didn't buy Crackdown just to play the Halo 3 beta [although I did rent it (Crackdown), because it's still a great rental]. I guess I'll have to wait 2+ months until it comes out. I do have a Hori EX2 stick though, so I'm still excited for it's actual release.

Sorry until Microsoft release a Control pad with a nice accurate D-pad and 6 buttons ON THE FACE! I have to say no to street fighter on the 360.

Im not forking out for a stick cause it just feels wrong lieing on my ass trying to play with one of those. heh/

    @ jediknight52501,

You are right! Like I said, I hope they up the amount of room for arcade games. Right now the limit is 512 MB, if it was at least 1 GB, there would be bigger and better NEW arcade games and more possibilities for re-releases of older games such as you suggested Megaman, Megaman X and as well as more SF games to.

    Posted Mar 12, 2008 4:58 pm PT

Alpha did NOT have better visuals than 3rd Strike, are you mad? Street Fighter III has some of the best 2D sprites I've ever seen.

  • jediknight52501

    Posted Mar 12, 2008 4:27 pm PT

Street Fighter Alpha 3 should be online not Street Fighter III 3rd Strike. Alpha 3 had more characters and better visuals the 3rd Strike. and even Street Fighter Double Impact on the Dreamcast was better then 3rd Strike in most areas. i wish Capcom would put the Alpha Anthology and Anniversary Collection on one disc and all 3 Street Fighter games on second disc and release it as Street Fighter Complete for all us Street Fighter fans. that and add a few Mega Man games to the 360. think of all the achievements they could come up with.

  • SpareJesus

    Posted Mar 12, 2008 4:19 pm PT

Uhm. For those whining about SFIII 3rd Strike online--

You do realize that you could've just gotten the Anniversary Collection on the XBox and gotten 3rd Strike, Hyper Fighting and the SF Movie all on one disc, right? Online too? Sheesh.

    @ 5FingersOfDeath - "3rd Strike Online please."

HOLY CRAP, YES!!! I am still waiting for an announcement for 3rd strike to be put on XBL. Why can't they friggin up the amount of space, jeez. The amount of space for an arcade game right now is like 512 MB. can't they do at least a gig, please I'm begging you MS, please. I love 3rd Strike and it has been my favorite SF ever because I remember always playing my brother (Who's freaking amazing) and just having fun. Please MS, please.

    you forgot a few....

Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
Super Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighing: The New Challengers

I know there's a few more other than that. My friend and I went and found every version ever made and documented them, but they're on his computer, so I don't have the list with me, otherwise I'd post it.

We still need to add this one.

i got quite a dilemma here, i prefer to play this game on XBL cause i have an established friends list with ppl who will def get this, but i would want to get it for ps3 also cause i prefer their d-pad for fighting games, but not the online......what should i do?

  • hegetshiskeys

    Posted Mar 12, 2008 2:33 pm PT

I absolutely can't stand the 360s directional pad. Trying to pull off tough moves in Ultimate MK3 can be a terribly frustrating experience. Also, trying to cast spells in Castlevania: SOTN (like Soul Steal) lead to me almost throwing my controller out the window. I could go on and on. And NO, my controller isn't broken! None of them are. It's the eeffin D pad!! MS needs to develop a controller with a D pad that's similar to Sony's or Nintendo's cuz these games suck trying to poke around with the current one. I think I'll pass on this, sorry MS

I'm glad to hear about the "rebalanced mode" and hope that is the default mode at tournaments. Despite having a huge cast of characters, at tournaments you will mostly see O.Sagat and Dhalsim, the two most powerful characters in the game as well as being the easiest. Remix looks great and probably will be reasonably price. Hopefully the redo the sounds. The voices from Super Street Fighter was too high pitch, almost girly.
