Sims 3 unveiling on March 19?

New EA teaser site promises further details about the next iteration of its megapopular life-sim series in two weeks.

In November 2006, Electronic Arts chief financial officer Warren Jenson revealed that The Sims 3 was in the works. Though he was reticent on details about the next iteration of the series--which is so popular that one of EA's four divisions is devoted to it--he did say the franchise would eventually arrive on the Wii and PlayStation 3 consoles. The Sims' Wii debut, MySims, went on sale last September to mixed critical and commercial success. However, to date, no Sims games have appeared on either the PS3 or its archrival Xbox 360 console.

That, however, may soon change. After over a year under the radar, the Sims 3 has resurfaced courtesy of a teaser page on the EA-owned URL thesims3.ea.com. The site went live this week with an enigmatic splash page showing an emerald-green crystal with the numeral "3" next to it. Below it are the words "More information coming soon!*" and below that the date "*March 19."

What exactly is EA teasing? An ESRB "Rating Pending" logo discreetly tucked at the bottom of the page seems to indicate it is indeed a single Sims 3 game. However, the company has not elaborated on whether said game will be a proper successor to the Sims 2, which was released on the PC in 2004 and adapted for the DS, Mac, GameCube, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, original Xbox, and Game Boy Advance the following year.

Sales-wise, the NPD Group reports the original Sims 2 has sold nearly 4.9 million copies on all platforms in the US, with the PC edition spawning 15 expansion and add-on packs. Other non-PC Sims 2 games included, The Sims 2: Pets and The Sims 2: Castaway. According to EA, nearly 100 million Sims games have been sold worldwide since the Will Wright-created series launched in 1999.

    yrh i think it will be great btw the reason y its not on 360 is cas the disc that 360 uses cant hold the memory and they would need multidiscs but cas ps3 uses blu-ray discs its 6 times the memory of a 360 disc. thats y in 09/10 there will be alot ov massive games on ps3 that simply cant fit on an xbox 360 disc for example: god of war 3 killzone 2 M.A.G and others...

    the last couple sims games for playstation has it so you can't have kids. hopefully this one will make it so you can. and more room in the house please? i'm tired of having to put out fires cause of "too much" furniture.
    it should live up to the others.

    Wow! I didn't realize Sims2 had that many expansions/add-ons. Glad I didnt buy each one of those and opted to wait until they put them in one package like they did on the first Sims series.

    i mean the only next thing to put on the sims would have to filter out the nudity mesh, what else can you do? sound effects on the toilet, a better woohoo graphic...?

    WOW. That "emerald green crystal," correctly called a plumbob, looks just orgasmic. If The Sims 3 graphics are that pretty, I'll be a happy camper.

    The problem of the Sims is that it's a social life simulator for all ages what makes it boring. If we had an accurate life sim game it'd be rated for adults only. Imagine a family in which the dad gets drunk every evening and hits his son or a teenager who starts taking drugs,etc. More or less common, this is part of life.

    for the love of god, enough with the sims and the 50 million add-on packs.

    the sims is just an excuse for grown ups to play with a doll house.
    mind you im being a little harsh, when it first came out it was amusing at least. but once ea starting milking the crap out of it. it just became annoying, but then really it the sad arses that buy all that crap that are to blame really.

    There was a hint of this in the latest expansion. I loaded it up and clicked on one of my families to start it up. For some reason a guy came along and dropped a box off. Inside was a computer with, what game loaded on it? Sims 3. So I guess this news confirms my earlier suspiscions.

    I'd assume that the Sims 3 would hit the PC first, and later you'd see a full fledged PS3 port, since it was announced, and has been in development on the PS3 first. Then I figure you'd see a 360 and a Mac port that are good, but not as good as the PS3 or PC versions.

    At about the same time as the 360 and Mac versions, expect to see The Sims 3 get a crappy port to the Wii, DS, Mac, and possibly PSP and/or PS2. Then expect a BAGILLION expansions, spin offs, and just about everything else.

    Hopefully, this will be a good game, and I expect it to be as much. Wouldn't be surprised to see it hit by the end of the year, though it'd be more likely to be a first half of 2009 title. Should be a nice temporary console exclusive for the PS3.
