Eidos reassumes Battlestations

Sequel to Eidos' tactical strategy game expands beyond Battle of Midway with US- and Japanese-specific single-player campaigns.

Last year, Eidos' Battlestations: Midway let gamers take tactical command of US Pacific forces in a campaign mode that followed World War II from Pearl Harbor in December of 1941 through the June 1942 Battle of Midway. The publisher is clearly ready to take gamers through the rest of the war, because today it announced Battlestations: Pacific for the Xbox 360 and PC.

Picking up where the last game left off, Battlestations: Pacific will again put players in charge of the Pacific theater of operations to take control of conflicts up through the battles for control of Okinawa in the dying days of World War II. However, Eidos is also giving players a chance to see the conflict from another point of view--and change history in the process--with two single-player campaigns, one American and one Japanese.

GameSpot met with Battlestations: Pacific lead designer Botond Szalacsi at the recent Game Developers Conference to find out more about the upcoming game. He said that while the American campaign will accurately portray the period after the crucial Battle of Midway, the Japanese campaign will cover a lengthier period of time and will allow players to rewrite history as if Japan had gained victory in specific engagements throughout the latter half of the war.

In missions, players will be able to use paratroopers and new naval landing craft to capture and hold island territories, and then use their gun emplacements for strategic defense. Pacific's campaign maps are said to be up to twice as big as those found in Midway, and maps in multiplayer will now scale to the number of players in a given match. Five new multiplayer modes will be included, though specifics on those modes were unavailable at press time. Lastly, Salaczy said the team had scouted historical locations and gained access to blueprints for World War II-era vehicles and machinery during its initial design process.

i did enjoy the original, an interesting slant on the standard strategy formula. i just wish there had been an offline skirmish option

THE FATHER WAS A WELL-MADE GAME;you could change the way of your war every moment you want;the graphic was generic,and the gameplay was smooth and campaigns was good but has limited;i wish this one go better;

I loved Battlestations, and am very happy to hear about this. Should be awesome, and look incredible, especailly since the last one was just a port of an Xbox Original game.

I quite enjoyed the original as it was a break from 'The Norm', I remain very optomistic about this one.

Well the only other place is the battles between britain and germany so they could have gone for both sides of the naval war!

This BS:M game was more of a console game then a PC game. The PC game was just too "casual" for my tastes. Controls were not well thought out. And, if you wished to play online...you had to stand on one foot, whistle Anchors Away and say the Japanese alphabet all at the same time. Was just not a very PC freindly game. At the time, I thought this might make a much better console game but even then I doubted it. I guess my tastes have moved beyond the "simple".

Battle stations: Midway was an awesome game and I still enjoy it today. A sequel would be a for sure buy for me. If they improve the graphics and tighten the controls for their air combat this would be an outstanding game. It is one of the best air sea combat games on the 360. It would even hit a major score if land combat was added with naval and air support. Glad that Eidos sees it the same way! Can not wait.

Dude, I can't wait! The first one kicked ass and took some names. Hope the second is better than the first. It would be the perfect combat game of that catogorey.

I hope Eidos makes a PS3 version, too. I had the first one on the PC, and I'm not much of a PC gamer. I would have definitely liked and played the game a lot more on a console (that I have... I don't have a 360 yet)

The first one was fun but hopefully they fix all the multi-player bugs that made the thing ALMOST unbearable to play.

They need to add more offline functionality to the game. Hopefully you can do skirmish games against the AI.

the battle of the Atlantic would be horrible. Its just u-boats vs. destroyers, and only the Bismarck against the British Navy. Thats it. The Pacific Theater is much more interesting for Naval warfare.

I wasn't a huge fan of the first, though it wasn't a bad game, so I might check this out...but to be honest, whenever I hear of Eidos' next projects, I pray that I read "Legacy of Kain" somewhere in the text...*sigh*...the wait continues.....

Yeah, the demo for the first one should still be up. It was pretty decent...if I actually had money I probably would have picked it up for the 360.

Maybe they will fix the most pain in the butt thing i foudn with teh first. the fact you couldn't have inverted flying controls and keep the boats controls the same, was incrediably lame. i tried for hours trying to get it to keep the planes inverted and the boats not, with no luck on the 360 version. if they fix that in this, this could be great, because in my opinion, that inverted issue was what really held the game back.
