EA co-ops Red Alert 3 on PC, 360, PS3

Stalinist Command & Conquer spin-off confirmed for latest consoles, will sport full cooperative campaign with "lighthearted" storyline; beta to be bundled with Kane's Wrath.

Less than 24 hours after Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 was first revealed, Electronic Arts has officially announced the game. Like Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, the real-time strategy title will also be available for the Xbox 360. However, unlike its predecessor, Red Alert 3 will join World in Conflict on the PlayStation 3, marking the expansion of the traditionally PC-centric RTS genre onto another console.

In addition to divulging Red Alert 3's platforms, EA has revealed some details about the game itself. First and foremost, the game will sport "a fully cooperative, story-driven campaign." But, to the delight of some and disappointment of others, said story will be in the "lighthearted style" of Red Alert 2, which emphasized blackly humorous Soviet-era buffoonery during its live-action cutscenes.

Like in the previous Red Alert games, the plot in Red Alert 3 will concern some ill-advised time travel altering the course of history. In this case, the leaders of the crumbling Soviet Union use an Eastern European answer to the Wayback Machine in an attempt to retroactively prevent Russia's defeat in the Cold War. Instead, the era-hopping Soviets set up an alternate timeline that sees Japan secure its Pacific Rim empire without sparking World War II. The result is a near-future World War III between the European-American Alliance, the Soviet Union, and the Empire of the Rising Sun.

Red Alert 3's alternate timeline has also produced alternate technologies. Combined with the game's overt humor, the new tech will see the war fought with "wacky and wonderful weapons," such as "tesla coils, war blimps, teleportation, armored bears, intelligent dolphins, floating island fortresses, and transforming tanks." As befits a war in the Pacific Ocean, the game will also have a heavy emphasis on naval combat.

Though it launched the official Red Alert 3 Web site today, EA has not yet announced Red Alert 3's release date. However, those who purchase the limited edition of Tiberium Wars or its Kane's Wrath expansion pack will receive an invitation to the game's beta test, which is scheduled for later this year.

    @Seriphyn

    Plus, RA 1 was the only one that really connected to C&C1. EA took over when it came to C&C:TS and C&C:RA2. I can't remember how RA2 connects to RA1 and such, but for me RA3 makes more sense. So.. Basically.. I think the events of RA2 never happened if thats the story?

    @ greyzhaze:

    Well, they actually did not come up with that one.
    Halo wars, which has been in production for 4 years,
    announced campaign co-op back in E3 '07.

    "Light-hearted campaign."

    Oh dear. For the reader's information, and for Gamespot's;
    Kane and the Brotherhood of Nod appeared at the end of RA1.
    There was a reason for this. There were mammoth tanks and
    abrams and bradlys, there were even hints to the GDI! What more do
    you need? The RA1 campaign was dark and interesting, two of the main characters in the FMVs get killed off in the Soviet missions,
    and Stalin gets left to rot underneath rubble in the Allied one (a
    rather macabre twist). It was supposed to tie up to TD right there,
    but EA buys Westwood, and hey! Sequels galore! *sobs*

    Though - seriously - I probably will buy it. (I'm so weak).

    Cold War? Japan in WW2? Did EA forget the alternate histories of the C&C series or are GameSpot retarded? Gee, I was hoping RA3 would bridge the gap between that series and the Tiberium one...ah well now it's just a campy World in Conflict

    yeah, RTS's on consoles are tricky. I wish some one would just make a keyboard and mouse for the 360, or even just some sort of RTS-specific hardware. I'd buy it.

    Holy God,I was obsessed with Red Alert 2 when it came out. It's like Age of Empires except more modern and cool and with things blowing up.Red Alert 3 should be really interesting....and hopefully better than C&C3(not that that was a bad game, just that Red Alert should always own all).

    @gameman888: Yeah, the alternate history buff in me twitches at times, but then again, time travel and its possible effects are so up in the air, it can get crazy. However, I'll still agree the backstory is getting a tad out of whack.

    As for my previous comment about me playing an RTS on a console (me being a PC player more than consoles), what the heck was up with those thumbs downs? I just said that playing an RTS on a consoles was very possible, but that I much preferred playing an RTS on the PC.

    Fanboys from both sides...idiots as always.

    Red Alert 2 was soo amazing this better stay as a red alert game and not become just another C&C game.
    Cross platform co op would be cool too.

    EA, please do something about that horrible RA3 logo.
    It looks way too childish and cooshy...
    ..as i fear the game will become.

    I used to think red alert was so much better than the tiberium sun collection for it stuck to units and structures that actualy related to the real world, and tiberium sun had the 'wacky' animals, mutants, and strange units and structures.
    Cant EA go back to red alert being a fun game with modern technologys, its much more fun fighting another nation with existing weapons, it gives you a sense that you could actualy achive this if given a chance. but i dont think floating fortresses will be comming around in the real world anytime soon...

    Wait? Consoletards get the game too? I hope they will make two separate version so they won't:
    1)Make the game too dumb for PC users.
    2)Make the game too hard to control for concole users.

    @daman1616: hoax as in, it isn't worth buying and it isn't exactly a new game, so u suck it if you want bbbbbooooooiiiiiiiiii, + you are not too bright are you?. This was something i thought that Blizzard won't ever do, make a new engine add 15 or less new things to the game and call it a sequel. I hope they won't make the same thing with Diablo 3 if they will ever make it .
