Smash Bros. Brawl busts million mark

Nintendo's mascot fighter for Wii becomes a platinum-selling pugilist in first 11 days of Japanese release.

Multiple delays for Super Smash Bros. Brawl haven't exactly deadened consumer enthusiasm for the anticipated title. According to a Reuters report citing figures from publisher Enterbrain, the game sold 1.08 million copies in Japan on its first 11 days of sale.

That sets a record pace for Japanese Wii software sales, according to the article. Wii Sports (which is sold as a stand-alone game in Japan but bundled with the hardware in other territories) managed the million milestone 11 weeks after release, while the more recent Wii Fit amassed that many sales in its first seven weeks on the market. After its first week on sale, Super Smash Bros. Brawl had racked up sales of nearly 820,000, according to Media Create.

The multimascot Nintendo fighter will get a chance to match those brawny sales figures when it sees a North American release on March 9, after being delayed from its originally announced December 2007 launch, as well as a follow-up February date.

    I really fail to see why you people are comparing Halo 3 and Smash. Completely different games. Different genres, different market, different everything. Brawl is going to be awesome, no matter what. By the end of this generation, Brawl will have sold over 6 million copies. I guarantee that. Melee sold about that much on GCN, imagine how much Brawl will sell on Wii.

    Halo 3 is a huge let down, when CoD4 came out Cod is way more addictive because there are not any glitches and all of the guns can actually do sometime, in halo its Sniper people cannot die because your gun cant shoot far.

    Sorry to be off topic, but Smash Bros better sell more than halo 3 because the extended dates and stuff make people more excited to get the game. I certainly AM and will try to do everything just to get the game, It looks way better than Halo 3 or CoD4, and trust me because I have CoD4 and Halo 3 too.

    Not to get cocky or anything but i wanna waste everyone at Smash Bros with Mario or DK. Hope to play anyone of you. . C(0_Q)

    Woah they are doing real well. Halo 3 will lose it sales because not many Japanese bought it. If SSBB sells 1 million + in Japan, just imagine what it could do in the rest of the world 5 - 15 million.

    I still don't think it's a question that Brawl will outsell Halo 3. Although Halo 3 may have been much more anticipated by the public, Brawl has a massive amount of new characters, stages, and features. Halo 3 only has some minor improvements from Halo 2, with better graphics, and an extended storyline. I'm glad I already pre-ordered it, or I would have to fight through a mob to reach the store shelves on Sunday, March 9th.

    Wait until the game releases in the US before making sales number comparisons between Halo and SSBB. Looking at Japan, the only region Smash is out in, Smash has CRUSHED the first week of Halo's release by nearly 15 times.

    OtakuRay: yo dont hate on smashbros like that.....
    its definetely NOT lame and silly. Its taken as one of the worlds most competitive games and its taken very seriously in competition. Smashbros is not lame. it has the most unique battle system and it pulls it off greatly. Brawl is not just any fighting game. It DEFINES HARDCORE. Whether you love it or not you know it is gonna kick the other game developers' @$$es in sales AND gameplay. thats why its doing so well. its unique competitive and fun!!! sry if I sound pissed but I aint. Just proving a point. Brawl FTW. Period.

    Don't compare it to Halo 3. H3 sold 1.7 million in pre-orders (that's BEFORE day 1). Brawl is a great game, and we'll enjoy it a lot, but comparing it to Halo 3 is an empty comparison.

    What is with people comparing Brawl's sales with Halo 3? I for one would be happy if I just got the game not just because of its sales. I want the game for my own pleasure as does everyone else so it doesn't matter as far as I am concerned. Brawl is gonna be a VERY big deal but remember this. I guarantee everyone, smashfan and non-smashfan alike that even if Brawl doesnt beat Halo 3's sales on its first day or week of relese its damn true its gonna beat them in the long run. Hell Halo 3 is already dead. I mean its sales are not gonna keep increasing drastically like Melee's and Brawls sales are gonna. Remember Melee? Remember how it is as old as the first Halo but yet it still sell units and is still a worldwide phenomenon?
    Remember how it is still the most competitive game in the world today? Its not forgotten is it? Its still purchased. So the point that I am trying to make here is that in the long run as the days, months and years pass by Brawl is gonna still be selling and those numbers are gonna be increasin rapidly and stack up to nicely own Halo 3 in sales. Its gonna be remembered much longer than Melee was and still is and thats saying something. Brawl FTW. Period.

    @ranman
    the genre of a game has no effect on its sales. look at cod4 and rock band, completely different genres, and yet they both were best sellers, so your argument is invalid. also, there is no doubt in my mind tht ssbb will outsell halo 3 because of the demand for it here as well as the exports to europe

    Hmm im very proud for this series its deffinatly come along ways. The one thing i dont think it will do is out sell Halo. It will come close but i just dont see it beating it in sales. They are two totally diff genres of gaming so that means thats a totally diff demographic they are aiming for.
