Super Smash Bros. busts 800,000

Highly anticipated Nintendo brawler sells well in Japan in its first week; Wii sales also boosted.

While American gamers are going to have to wait until March 9 to get their hands on Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Europeans still have no idea when they can expect their copies, the game has been selling like hotcakes since its January 31 release in Japan.

SSBB was only the seventh game in the history of top Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu to be given a perfect score of 40 out of 40, so it was no surprise that the game has been flying off store shelves.

The game has already sold 819,647 copies, easily taking it to number one in the Japanese charts for January 28 to February 3, according to figures released by Media Create.

Capcom's Devil May Cry 4, also released on January 31 came in second, selling some 205,390 copies.

Regarding hardware, the Wii came out on top this week, with SSBB no doubt helping to boost the sales of the console--94,473 were taken home by new owners. The PlayStation Portable came second with 72,528, then the DS Lite with 67,472, PlayStation 3 with 41,796, PlayStation 2 with 12,115, and finally the Xbox 360 with 6,060.

    camarinox, no, it isn't. Quit dreaming. Halo 3 sold 2.4-2.5 million copies in 24 hours in one country. Super Smash Bros. Brawl didn't.

    I have it for Japanese Version but not for English one!!!!

    It seems week 2 sales are over 450,000 units, making this game sell over 1.25 million in japan in only two weeks.

    Awesome!

    Devil May Cry 4 dropped to about 35,000 units in it's second week.

    I can't wait for this game. It's going to last us about 10 years before we get bored of it, seeing as how Melee lasted 7 years, and people are still playing it.

    Try to get Wii first... It's more difficult than games like Mario Galaxy, Zelda Twilight or Metroid Prime Corruption. So just imagine about SSBB. I'll wait in front of where I'll buy it, with my bro. Maybe I'll get a second copy... for a friend if he gives me enough money so I'll have two Brawl copies for March 9th for sure.

    @ Brambler: Me too, at first, but then I remembered...X Play is terrible. They don't know how to play games there. Watching Sess and Webb play was painful. I'm beginning to think that X Play is the worst VG coverage out there, especially after watching an episode of the 1Up show. You want hardcore gamers, man, that show's got 'em.

    Vagrant Story also got a perfect score from Famitsu, and that's the best game ever, IMO.

    Higher sales doesn't mean better. It's just that games with certain names, like Mario, will sell well no matter how good they are. Just look at Mario and Sonic at the Olympics...

    My people good information that I and encotrado on this game is very promising because this game will do one of the best in this system Wii. It is better than the meele and many more have the same character who brings about 32 brawl character is worth the espena the game really is not going to repentir and players who are not expected to see the van but soon we arrived shortly least one month and will make the game of year

    yeah 800 000 and it's only being sold in Japan. That is seriously good numbers there. Not many games even get up to that number in its entire shelf life.

    Ha, Xbox got Owned, But yes this shows that brawl will be a threat to public health when it is sold in America, the econemy will plummet, and we will enjoy it while the world ends, the only survivors will be the people who don't have wiis. Now I'm off topic, but oh well, Brawl will rule!

    On this japenese game magazien,they have 4 reviewers review the game. Each review being worth 10 points,brawl got a perfect 40 out of 40. Sorry,i don't know the name of the magazien.

    Brawl is not just another game. Nintendo has created classic games by the thousands, and it took a long time to do so. Brawl holds the power of those thousands of classics through characters, appearances, music, trophies, stickers, and 1000+ other ways. It's not a game that was created from a bad idea that crashes and burns. It's a game that has a history to it, a game that has been reinforced from the games that it has been created from. And the classics that it has been created from are simply the best- you won't find a greater classic than Ornica of Time. You won't find a greater background than Mario. Better addictiveness than the original Sonic. Brawl gives a fresh, and outstanding new feel to all of those powerful and history-making games. No other than Nintendo can do so. No other has the history and Superior knowledge that Ninendo has, and what a great history of games it is, only able to be created from such Superior knowledge. Nintendo has created a masterpiece yet again. No one can argue with that. No one. Respect it. Live it. Love it. Peace.

    wish the japanese wouldn't be so ardent about staying away from american products. they could show some more acceptance like we have of their products. besides that how bout some appreciation for all the huge role the american market has done for their economy.

    Impressive numbers for Japan. I guarantee America will beat it on week one. Nintendo has definitely brought their A-game this console generation. Smash with online play...awesome! It's gotta be better than PS3's online. BTW, I'm not a fanboy, I own all 3 systems, and by far PSN has the crappiest online service.
