Just Cause 2 parachutes into 2008
Eidos announces Just Cause 2 to land on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC this year.
When Just Cause was released in 2006, it took a page out of the book of other favourites in the modern action-adventure genre, and set them within a huge, island-based game world which players could traverse by vehicle or using their character's trusty parachute.
SCi confirmed in an earnings call last year that a sequel to the game was "already in development" and Eidos has today released details of Just Cause 2. The second instalment in the series is being developed by the same team at Avalanche Studios and will be published by Eidos in the second half of 2008.
Rico Rodriguez, the protagonist from the first game, returns again, hot on the tail of a former boss who has taken off with stolen money to a fictitious South Pacific island called Panau, complete with cities, lush jungle, arid desert, and snowcapped mountainous regions. The island draws on influences from throughout the South Pacific and Southeast Asian areas of the world.
Like its predecessor, Just Cause 2 will encourage exploration and free roaming through the massive world--which will be smaller, but more "jam packed" than the first. Eidos says that improvements have been made to enemy artificial intelligence and the missions are set to be more complex and numerous. Rico will also have some new moves, including the ability to move around on vehicles he's landed on using his parachute. There will also be more vehicles available in the game.
While there will be a greater emphasis on real-world physics this time around, gamers will still be able to pull off some of the insane moves from the first game with the parachute and grappling hook at the ready. Both these key items have been upgraded, allowing the player to undertake new tasks and traverse a great deal of the gameworld up in the air.
Just Cause 2 is set for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC sometime before the end of this year.
