CryEngine coming to PS3, 360

Console versions of the technology behind visual stunner Crysis will debut at this year's Game Developers Conference.

Back in April of 2006, rumors surfaced that Crytek was bringing its much-anticipated PC shooter Crysis to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. More recently, there was speculation that an extended "Crysis 1.5" would be coming exclusively to the PS3.

Although the aforementioned rumors remain unconfirmed, today the German developer announced that console versions of CryEngine 2, the technology behind Crysis' processor-punishing visuals, are in development. The console editions of the middleware will be unveiled at private appointments behind closed doors at the upcoming Game Developers Conference, which runs from February 18-22 in San Francisco.

"This year's engine will be shown for the first time running on multiple hardware platforms such as the PS3 and Xbox 360 to a select audience," the company said in a statement.

While general attendees may not be able to get a peek at the console editions of the engine, Crytek will be showing off the fully optimized engine's performance on a budget PC that could be put together for about $600. In addition, Crytek's Cevat Yerli, Sten Hübler, and Bernd Diemer will host a conference session titled "Crysis in the Making," which will provide insight into how the PC shooter came together.

    If Crysis will come out for consoles then i think it will be a complete rework of the game in the same manner that Far Cry for the xbox was. I also remembering reading an interview where high-up person( I can't remember his name) in crytek said that if they bring crysis to consoles then each version will be specifically tailored for that console.

    this article is saying that there will be a new engine for consoles. the same engine the PC uses requires much more powerful hardware.

    ok to EVERYONE hoping that Crysis will come to consoles the answer IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE NO. Cervat Yerli has been saying this for ages and ages and ages.

    All this article is saying is that the ENGINE used by Crysis, the CryEngine2 is being developed for consoles. This means games using the engine will have just as good physics, lighting, depth and realism that made Crysis a masterpiece.

    I think they going to bring crysis for xbox360 and ps3 because of the pirating thas what i really think! they going to kill it for the pc crysis fans like halo 1 came out for pc but halo 2 come out for pc few years latter and halo 3 i dont really know if it will be coming out for pc

    As I said before, it's quiet possible that Crysis would be able to run on the 360 & PS3. However that doesn't mean the game can run the quality as it does on the PC. Today's latest Graphic cards just barely squeek by on "High Settings," running at 30-35 FPS. If Crysis comes out for either consoles visuals will be manipulated so much that allot of console gamers are going to be upset. Crytek also said that "THEY" would not be working on Crysis for the console, but simply have another company do that job for them. There are many possiblities as well. Like FarCry it was a totally different game in general from the PC version. The same might happen to Crysis. But for all the console gamers I'm sad to say that this game and engine will not be half the quality it is for the PC.

    The newest gaming engine cryengine2 I would like to introduce, the gaming engine that, passes all gaming engines thats, they have NOW.

    Did you really played HL2 and Doom 3 before GT4. It was a good looking PS2 game spectecular on account of PS2 but comparing it to PC blockbusters is hard for me. REally when I first time played Tekken5 on PS2 in 2005 I was not understanding on what accounts did GS gave it 10/10 for graphics since my PC heritance but still it looks spectacular PS2 game anyways. Same was with Doom 3 for Xbox. Yeah but SC 3 port on Xbox was stunning likewise RE4 too was stunning but still no match for PC blockbusters.

    the cost of upgrading components to play crysis with decent fps is rediculous. Realy the only thing keeping me from switching over from pc to ps3 is crysis. I realy love the game so hey if it comes out for ps3 then its goodbye to pc gaming for me.

    when[and if] it comes to console, they are going to say its the best graphics ever, only because it will be the best they have ever seen on a console and because the have never seen anything better cause they're not pc gamers, of course.
    but to us pc gamers it will be like comparing the graphics the original xbox to a 360, it will be that much of a difference

    As far as visuals go you're far from it. IF your statement were true you would be sure that PC gaming would be dead as soon as the Xbox360 began selling, and I wouldn't be wasting money on Pc upgrades which only happens 1 time every 3 years. What you need for stunning graphics in Crysis is no less than a 8800 series card, this will let you enable all settings on high, if you want to go on very high settings which are jaw dropping and simply the best and unrivaled graphics on a game then you would need to balance it out between medium settings etc. That's one of the best things the games on Pc have, simply you can customize your graphics settings to suit your needs or if your PC can't handle it you can balance the settings out and and still get good image.
    This engine although they use the word "optimized" instead of using "works on consoles" will only let you go so far. I'm most certain that when the game comes to console the graphics will be to that comparable of medium settings on a PC, which I'm sure it will play on decent 30 fps without Anti-aliasing and don't expect a resolution higher than 720p. With that said I think many of you will have an idea on what you can expect from this game. Ohh... And I also wish that consoles could support mouse and keyboard in games, it will make them much more popular.

But I agree with you that they should have made the console version available as soon as possible. I don't know how'd they expected that with the requirements that the Pc version need they would sell as much as the worst console game available. But they sure managed to get publicity for he game as "The best visual game of all time."

    Also a nice cheers for JackfnBurton's terrific post, I'm sure if they read it they'll understand and stop saying the same thing.

    Nah most of us dont have "Mums" and most of us who do PC gaming tend to have a good enough computer to at least run it on medium if not high ... if you want the console experience ... expect to get one.

    I think that the developers should have considered that our 'mums' dont really like us playing on our PCs as they are made for 'work', so they should have started developing a parallel project of making the game Crysis available on other platforms, such as the PS3 and XBox 360. This way, we and they (the developers) would have had smiles on our faces and they would profit alot more.

    Most big engines launch with a big bad game to demonstrate what it can do, games that are just as much an advertisement to developers as they are of interest to gamers. Half Life 2 showed off the source engine, FarCry CryEngine 1, Doom 3 its engine and so on. Unreal Engine 3 hasn’t really done its own demo game since it launched its first game on 360, which was a big advertisement to console game developers but didn’t really give the engine the resources it needed to go all out.

    Crysis is obviously the technical demo for CryEngine 2, now they have acquired developer interest they are diversifying the range of platforms the engine can appear on. So CryEngine 2 coming to consoles after its big game release isn’t that big a surprise.

    However Crysis, like most past game engine demos, launched on PC so they could really show off what the engine can do. Now that it is being transferred from plentiful to restricted resources, games based on the engine are not going to look as good as its launch title. Recall what the original Unreal Engine 3 technical demonstration in 2004 looked like, the games never look as good as the demos.

    Great post JackfnBurton, but your really just talking to a wall. Everyone thinks their system is the best, and consol gamers are still repeating the "Its equal to a high end PC" line... not thinking (or careing) about the fact the 360 has been out for about 2 and a half years already. While thats not ancient in the hardware world.... it is getting up there in age.

    Even in its early days the 360 couldn't compeat with high end PC's. I played the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion on my 360 and an HDTV. I then played it on my higher end PC at the time.... and it was clearly better looking on the PC. So theres no way they could take Crysis as is... probly the game with the best graphics to date... and port it directly to the 360. Its just not possible to do and keep the game the same. And its not just the graphics... its the phsyics engine as well.

    My prediction is they are going to release, a not so good looking Crysis like game that lacks many of the features the PC version did. And all the consol players will be mad and demanding to know why they were given a lesser game. And Im not anti-consol either... I have a 360 and really like it for some games, but the facts are the facts. The PC, while more expensive, is a much more powerful gaming system.

    Yeah...you sound knowledgeable. It's not about the stupid gamepad controls, its about the console lacking the technology to accurately recreate the experience. This my friends is why I game on a PC. I'm not hating on consoles; it's just what I have said before: if you want the least expensive and most convenient solution, buy a console. If you want the most powerful and versatile solution, go with a PC. Like my 360 playing friend who lamented Crysis not being available for consoles for the foreseeable future:

    "This is so unfair! I thought the PS3 and the 360 were supposed to be the equivalent of a high end PC?"

    "They would be," I said. "If it were still 2004." This is why when your console becomes obsolete it goes in the closet, and as your PC ages you simply replace the bits that are obsolete with new parts and keep gaming. Eventually you run out of options and build a new rig, but if you know what you're doing you can stay ahead of the game for several years with the same basic rig. There's pros and cons to any platform. Trust me, I would love to play Soul Calibur on PC, but fighting games lend themselves better to consoles - that's just the breaks. That's why some people own a 360, PS3 AND a PC. You can't have everything unless you HAVE everything. So, you want to play Crysis? Then get yourself a PC. If you can't afford it, then get over it and go play something else. It won't kill you.

    Um i think it would work fine on consoles i mean what would be so hard about that? just use the D-Pad on the 360 or just have a wheel like in mass effect you press RB and then select which power you want, i mean crysis is a shooter and shooters work on consoles and think with the consoles you wont have to spend any money to upgrade your system to handle the game

    Regardless of the PS3's somewhat old RSX GPU, the Cell has been shown and discussed it is capable to Process Real-Time Ray-Tracing generally speaking, it's literally a super computer inside. Superior to the standard Rasterising graphics the 360 only can produce with interactive framerate. The Xbox 360 would have hell of a lot harder time rendering Ray-tracing than the Cell in the PS3 due to it's old PowerPC based Xenon CPU.

    Just wait until the Devs master the Cell, just wait...

    Sorry mate but i am pretty sure you are wrong about the ps3 gpu mate. For starters the ps3 RSX is just a overhauled 7900 gpu. In otherwords, its old tech. It doesnt use unified shaders which are much more efficient than the old method of single vertex and pixel shaders. Not sure where you got your info from but i just think you have been misinformed. The fact is and its been said before, the xbox 360 gpu is more powerful and more advanced than the ps3 RSX. Everything else you said about the consoles i agree on, just not your stance on the gpu part. Overall, the 360 has more graphical power but less cpu power. I think they end up being fairly even in the end. ps3 is harder to work with and i think you can see this with a few games running a little slower on the ps3 than the 360 but in time they will probably solve these issues.

    About the crysis engine goin to consoles. Well i think if crysis was released on the consoles it would have to be toned down a little to get smooth framerates but i am sure they could still get it to look really good.

    Whether it looks better on a PC then a console means nothing to me. This game should come to the xbox 360 as it can be pushed to it's limits in a big way. C'mon CRYTEK bring it.

    ea couldnt care less about making a good port, all they care about is making money, and fyi, theres no way in hell a console version could be better than the pc version, espically since there wouldnt be the mod support, and before you go throwing the ut3 thing in my face, remember that the ps3 version only supporsts custom maps and modes, but NOT full conversion mods or even custom models, textures, meshes, etc. and is limited to the assets that ship with the game, and THAT is not exactly new for a console (some xbox games had custom map and game mode support). and if you think thats not something worthwhile

    honestly though, id like to see it come to consoles just so that crysis gets all the praise it deserves, but at the same time i see no way a console version could be better than the pc version.

    I couldn't care less about how some of you guys say that it shouldn't come to the next-gen consoles, but it's not a bad thing. I'm pretty sure that EA will be working hard to make sure that it'll be just as good or even better than the PC version.

    Crysis is not a game that is meant to be on any console! The great thing about computers is that there are no limits!!! With a video game console you can only run the game to what the console can handle, with a PC you can run games to there full blown potential and beyond!!! way beyond!!! So to take a game like Crysis (which has graphics that will still look great 10 years from now) and put it on a console is a very bad idea! PC will always prevail no matter what video game console comes out!

    wow are you guys **** serious ur arguing over the consoles .... sigh this is oathatetic ok microsoft has the best games ps3 has best graphics ok it doesint matter their both great to me i think PC best why cause the keyboard and mouse is simple and yes crysis better on PC i hvae 8800gt and 3 gband it runs about 30 fps and dont tell me well ps3 has this and this and xbox 360 has this this i have a 360 ok tis great ps3 i dont noe i just like systems with hella blood and gore why because i just do ok im sick in the brain

    The PS3's GPU is basically a modified Geforce 7900. The Xbow has the more powerful GPU, whereas the PS3 has the more powerful CPU... Not that it makes much of a difference, I'm no fanboy, so I'm not trying to detract from either system, or the PC. Play games, not platforms people.... Damn it I hate fanboys....

    meh, a console version would never be as fun to play as on the PC. the graphics would probably be less quality and its gonna be harder to play with the controller, you'll end up using a BT keyboard and mouse. might as well play it on the PC then.

    first off, go ahead and guess what has offically sold over a million copies, go on, guess.

    second, hmkiller:
    the ps3s gpu is actually more powerful than the 360s, sorry to break it to you. yes, the 360 uses unified shaders and uses a dx version that lies somewhere in between dx9 and dx10, but first realise that dx10 is not just an update to dx9 and therefor is more than just "features" and/or effects in a game, its a complete overhaul of the entire api, so its more than just features that can be rendered. however, directx is closed source, open gl, which is the ps3s api, is open source, meaning anyone can go in and tweak the api to their content, so in this way its much more capable than is directx, direct x cant be tweaked to the game makers content, open gl can.

    also, the 360 may use 48 unified shaders and support the geometry shader as well, but the fact is the raw performance of the ps3s gpu FAR exceeds what the 360s gpu is capable of, supposedly (and i have trouble believing this number myself) rsx is capable of outputting up to 1.8 teraflops (thats 1.8 trillion floating point calculations per second), thats almost twice the entire theoritical output of the entire 360, however i have trouble believeing that they could increase the output of a g71 core tenfold with only a few minor changes and a lower transistor count, however, the fact still remains that the ps3s gpu is the superior one.

    however, the 360 is in a much better memory situation, 512mb shared, 32 reserved for the system=480useable (btw, that 10mb extra, is only a frame buffer and is only really used to gauntaree 2xaa at all times), the ps3 on the other hand has 512mb split 256 for video and 256 for system, and reserves 96mb for system "stuff", leaving it with a total of 416mb of usealbe memory total, but its split, i have no idea of HOW its split, whether it comes all from system memory or split and taken from both system and video, so ill just leave it by saying 416mb useable.

    also, the 360 is much easier to program for, but that equates to less time and money spent optimizing, however, the ps3 has much more power that can be extracted from it, just a matter of time and money, A LOT of time, money and effort.
